Exploring the capacity of smoking cessation services in the Philippines.

INTRODUCTION: In the Philippines, smoking prevalence among adult smokers is slowly decreasing from 23.8% in 2015 to 19.5% in 2021. Despite this decline, evidence shows that while two-thirds of smokers consider quitting, only half receive quit advice from healthcare providers. This study aims to assess the readiness and capacity of health facilities to deliver smoking cessation services in alignment with Administrative Order (AO) 2021-0031 of the Department of Health (DOH). METHODS: This study followed a cross-sectional design. From August to September 2023, we administered an online questionn

Bibliometric Analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials in the Philippines.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are essential for advancing evidence-based healthcare by evaluating the effectiveness and safety of health interventions. Despite the increasing recognition of clinical research, the Philippines has had limited contributions to global RCT output. This bibliometric analysis aims to assess the trends, characteristics, and impact of RCTs conducted in the Philippines and published online. METHODS: A systematic search of Medline (PubMed), and EMBASE, along with Acta Medica Philippina, was conducted to identify published RCTs from Januar

Understanding the distributional effects of recurrent floods in the Philippines.

Successful recovery from extreme weather events is key to avoid long-term poverty implications. Yet, in disaster prone regions, there may not always be enough time to recover between events. There is a common narrative that the resulting incomplete recoveries aggravate adverse impacts, but approaches allowing for a systematic quantitative assessment are missing. Here, we extend an agent-based model to study welfare effects in the Philippines depending on household exposure and income. We find that incomplete recoveries increase cumulative consumption and well-being losses across the study peri

Sustainability and future outlook of the Philippine pig industry.

The Philippines relies significantly on swine-related enterprises for food security and economic stability. The sector has faced numerous restraints in recent years and remains considerably distant from reaching the production target for domestic consumption. This study aims to identify the key drivers of the nation's pork production in recent years, thereby enhancing our understanding of what is needed to make the industry sustainable in the future. A comprehensive review was conducted using keyword-based searches across major databases and official reports (2018-2023) to assess pig productio

Stigma and Inequity in Tuberculosis Transmission and Control in the Philippines.

Tuberculosis remains endemic in the Philippines despite decades of biomedical progress under the WHO End TB Strategy. This persistence reflects not a failure of medicine, but of systems that treat tuberculosis as a biomedical issue rather than a social one. While public health programs recognize community factors, stigma is still framed as a problem of awareness rather than a structural outcome of health institutions. Practices of isolation, surveillance, and labeling have normalized fear and exclusion, shaping how communities perceive and respond to the disease. By pathologizing patients rath

Liver Transplantation in the Philippines: Light at the End of the Tunnel.

End-stage liver disease is arguably one of the leading burdensome diseases among developing countries such as the Philippines. Although liver transplantation is considered the treatment of choice for decompensated cirrhosis, the establishment of a robust transplant program locally has been protracted as numerous obstacles continue to plague our transplant landscape. Issues on cost, options of having the transplant done overseas, and low rates of deceased donation are some of the difficulties that hamper our program's progress and development. In this study, we aim to present our experience and

The cost-effectiveness of human papillomavirus vaccination in the Philippines.

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the Philippines. Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination provides protection from the most common cancer-causing HPV types. This analysis used a proportionate outcomes model to estimate the potential cost-effectiveness of four different HPV vaccine products-Cervarix™, Cecolin®, GARDASIL®, and GARDASIL®9-for routine HPV vaccination of 10 cohorts of 9-year-old girls from the government and societal perspectives. Model parameters included cervical cancer burden, healthcare and program costs, vaccine efficacy with and without potential

Prevalence and spatial distribution of heterophyidiasis in Southern Philippines.

Heterophyidiasis is a fish-borne zoonotic disease that is considered to be an emerging public health problem in the Philippines. This study was carried out to determine the spatial distribution and risk factors of heterophyidiasis in five selected villages in New Corella, Davao del Norte in Southern Mindanao. Of the 1,101 individuals examined, 26 (2.36% overall prevalence rate, 95% CI 1.46-3.25) were positive for heterophyid eggs. Higher infection rate was observed in males (3.85%, 95% CI 2.27-5.43) than females (0.76%, 95% CI 0.02-1.5). Mapping of cases was done to show the spatial distributi

Sporadic Huntington's disease in the Philippines: a case report.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder with core clinical features of choreoathetosis, cognitive deficits and behavioral changes. It is a rare disorder, primarily affecting the Caucasian population, and rarely Asians. To date, there are only two reported, genetically proven familial HD cases in the Philippines. We present the case of a 39-year-old Filipino male with a 10-year history of progressive behavior and personality changes followed by cognitive decline and choreoathetotic movements. Neuroimaging showed atrophy of both caudate and putamen with puta

Epidemiology of drowning deaths in the Philippines, 1980 to 2011.

Drowning kills 372 000 people yearly worldwide and is a serious public health issue in the Philippines. This study aims to determine if the drowning death rates in the Philippine Health Statistics (PHS) reports from 1980 to 2011 were underestimated. A retrospective descriptive study was conducted to describe the trend of deaths caused by drowning in the Philippines from official and unofficial sources in the period 1980 to 2011. Information about deaths related to cataclysmic causes, particularly victims of storms and floods, and maritime accidents in the Philippines during the study period we

Epidemiology of Japanese encephalitis in the Philippines: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is an important cause of encephalitis in most of Asia, with high case fatality rates and often significant neurologic sequelae among survivors. The epidemiology of JE in the Philippines is not well defined. To support consideration of JE vaccine for introduction into the national schedule in the Philippines, we conducted a systematic literature review and summarized JE surveillance data from 2011 to 2014. METHODS: We conducted searches on Japanese encephalitis and the Philippines in four databases and one library. Data from acute encephalitis synd

Molecular detection and characterization of Theileria species in the Philippines.

Theileriosis is a tick-borne disease of domestic and wild animals that cause devastating economic loss in livestock in tropical and subtropical regions. Theileriosis is not yet documented in the Philippines as compared to babesiosis and anaplasmosis which are considered major tick-borne diseases that infect livestock in the country and contribute major losses to the livestock industry. The study was aimed to detect Theileria sp. at genus level in blood samples of cattle using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. Specifically, it determined the phylogenetic relationship of Theileria species a

New endemic foci of schistosomiasis infections in the Philippines.

Schistosomiasis affects 28 provinces in the Philippines found along the southeastern part where there is continuous rainfall throughout the year. In 2002 and 2005 respectively, two new endemic foci were reported in the northernmost (Gonzaga, Cagayan) and central (Calatrava, Negros Occidental) parts of the country. This study conducted in March 2008-March 2009 confirmed the presence of the disease by determining its prevalence using four diagnostic tests - Kato-Katz, circumoval precipitin test (COPT), ELISA and ultrasonography. Oncomelania hupensis quadrasi was identified through snail surveys

Price deflation and the underground organ economy in the Philippines.

BACKGROUND: This is the first in-depth study of the illicit human organ trade in the Philippines. The question for analytical investigation is why the underground organ commerce thrives, despite meager support and compensation for commercial donors (or vendors). METHODS: Quantitative survey results were obtained from a probability sample of living Filipino kidney vendors (P = 0.95; α = 0.05). The kidney trade was studied because it has the highest level of demand among all tradeable human organs in the Philippines and globally. RESULTS: The study finds that deflated vendor compensation, lowe

A rare case of Paget's disease of the bone in the Philippines.

A 40-year-old Filipina presented with a 2-year history of progressive bilateral inguinal and hip pain with limited range of motion. She had a bad fall which led to widespread body pains for 6 months partially relieved on multiple analgesic and anti-inflammatory agents. There was progressive weight loss and anemia. Focused musculoskeletal examination revealed moderate degree of generalized muscle atrophy, pain-limited range of motion of bilateral hip and shoulder joints, with equivocal muscle strength of both proximal and distal muscle groups of all extremities. Metastatic bone disease was rule
