Rethinking phosphorus removal in constructed wetlands: Amino acid exudation-mediated root-surface iron redox cycling drives plant luxury uptake to outperform substrate adsorption.

Plants can exhibit phosphorus luxury uptake, absorbing several-fold more P than required under P-sufficient conditions. Harnessing this underutilized capacity helps to overcome substrate adsorption saturation and improve the phosphorus removal efficiency and sustainability of subsurface flow constructed wetlands (SFCWs). Here, we engineered a dense, fiber filter-like mat-structured root system to replace conventional inert substrates and systematically investigated its P removal performance, mechanisms, and engineering feasibility. From late spring to early winter, the root-mat system more tha

Phosphorus speciation analysis of fatty-acid-based feedstocks and fast pyrolysis biocrudes via gel permeation chromatography inductively coupled plasma high-resolution mass spectrometry.

Renewable feedstocks, such as lignocelulosic fast pyrolysis oils and both vegetable oil and animal fats, are becoming a viable alternative to petroleum for producing high-quality renewable transportation fuels. However, the presence of phosphorus-containing compounds, mainly from phospholipids, in these renewable feedstocks is known to poison and deactivate hydrotreating catalysts during fuel production. In this work, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) combined with inductively coupled plasma high-resolution mass spectrometry (ICP-HRMS) was used to analyze feedstocks including unprocessed soy

Rice straw biochar and phosphorus inputs have more positive effects on the yield and nutrient uptake of Lolium multiflorum than arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in acidic Cd-contaminated soils.

The purpose of the study was to examine biochar amendment, phosphorus (P) fertilizer and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on the yield, nutrient and cadmium (Cd) absorption of Lolium multiflorum in acidic soil. It was shown that mycorrhizal inoculation had no positive influence on the plant shoot biomass and the contents of nitrogen (N), P, potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) in plants at all biochar and P level treatments. Irrespective of mycorrhizal inoculation and P level, biochar amendments markedly elevated the soil available P and K uptake in plant tissues. In contrast, bioc

Near-complete phosphorus valorization from sewage sludge: Cost-effective co-production of vivianite and bioavailable detoxified hydrochar via a recyclable citric acid-mediated hydrothermal process.

Efficient phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge is bottlenecked by stable phosphorus-binding within complex organic-inorganic matrices. Conventional hydrothermal treatments suffer from limited P dissolution, inevitable re-fixation, poor hydrochar P-bioavailability, and heavy metal (HM) risks. This work proposes a novel, recyclable citric acid (CA)-mediated hydrothermal process. Relying on strong CA-mediated coordination and its synergistic effects with hydrothermal conditions and sludge components, this process achieves efficient phosphorus release and targeted speciation control while mitiga

Genome-Resolved Insights Into Phosphate-Solubilizing Bacteria From Wild Rice Rhizosphere Reveal Adaptive Strategies for Phosphorus Cycling Under Acid-Saline Stress in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam.

Phosphorus (P) limitation constrains crop productivity in acid and saline soils of the Mekong Delta, where low P availability rather than total P content limits plant growth. This study aimed to isolate phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) from the rhizosphere of wild rice (Oryza rufipogon) and to investigate their functional traits and genomic basis of adaptation. A total of 43 bacterial isolates were obtained, of which 10 showed strong phosphate-solubilizing activity (PSI 1.5-2.5). Selected strains released up to ~900 mg L-1 soluble phosphorus after 10 days, with strain GC1.3 exhibiting hig

Evaluation and Development of Methodologies for the Synthesis of Thiophosphinic Acids.

Thiophosphorus acids R1R2P(S)OH constitute an important class of organophosphorus compounds, in which the phosphorus atom is intrinsically chiral if R1 ≠ R2. In connection with a project aimed at the preparation of chiral thiophosphorus acids, various available literature methods were considered, but few fit the requirement of odorless reagents. Herein, the results of our studies on the synthesis of thiophosphinic acids are reported. Ultimately, two major approaches were selected: (1) the Stec reaction of phosphorus amides with carbon disulfide; and (2) the one-pot synthesis of thiophosphorus

Selective Separation of HNO3 and HCl by Extraction: The Investigation on the Noncovalent Interaction between Extractants and Acids by Density Functional Theory.

There is a huge demand for the highly selective separation of HNO3 and HCl in many industries, and solvent extraction is considered a feasible method. In this article, DFT calculations were performed to investigate the interactions between acids and extractants including alcohols, ketones, phosphorus, and amines. One of the significant findings to emerge from this study is that amines bind to acids through ion association. Nevertheless, the interaction between acids and alcohols, ketones, and phosphorus with a (RO)3P═O structure is mainly dominated by hydrogen bonds. The change of Gibbs free e

Compatibility of vivianite-crystallization pathway of phosphorus recovery with anaerobic digestion systems of thermally hydrolyzed sludge.

Phosphorus in sewage is mostly enriched in activated sludge in wastewater treatment plants, making excess sludge an appropriate material for phosphorus recovery. The potential of vivianite (Fe3(PO4)2·8H2O) crystallization-based phosphorus recovery during the anaerobic digestion of thermally hydrolyzed sludge was discussed with influences of organic compounds on the formation of vivianite crystals being investigated in detail. Bovine serum albumin, humic acids and alginate, as model compounds of proteins, humic acids and polysaccharides, all inhibited vivianite crystallization, with the influen

Relationship between blood pH and potassium and phosphorus during acute metabolic acidosis.

Metabolic acidosis is known to be associated with increased blood potassium and phosphorus concentrations but the influence of mineral versus nonmineral acids on these variables remains undefined. Therefore, we infused anesthetized mongrel dogs with 0.45% saline (controls), the mineral acids HCl and NH4Cl, and the nonmineral acids lactic, beta-hydroxybutyric and methyl malonic for 1-3 h. Administration of both mineral acids was associated with significant increases in plasma potassium. In contrast, infusion of the three monmineral acids did not result in increases in plasma potassium; in fact,

[Bone and Nutrition. A novel function of phosphorus].

Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for bone formation by forming hydroxyapatite with calcium. Simultaneously, phosphorus is also a component of high energy bond of ATP, nucleic acids, and phospholipids. Recent studies have demonstrated that excess or lack of dietary phosphorus intake may cause vascular dysfunction, cardiac hypertrophy, and impaired glucose tolerance. Here, we introduce recent findings about the effects of high or low dietary phosphorus intake on several organs except for bone.

Research advances in the mechanisms of nitrogen-phosphorus synergy mediated by root exudates and mycorrhizal networks in cereal-legume intercropping systems.

The cereal-legume intercropping system achieves efficient utilization of nitrogen and phosphorus through interactions between roots and soil organisms, making it a key practice in sustainable agriculture. We systematically summarized the nitrogen and phosphorus mutual promotion mechanism mediated by root exudates and mycorrhizal networks in the cereal-legume intercropping system, and proposed future research directions. Cereal plants mobilize phosphorus in rhizosphere by secreting organic acids and phosphatases. The released phosphorus is then transferred to the rhizosphere of legumes via the

Convenient synthesis of phosphonodipeptides containing C-terminal α-aminoalkylphosphonic acids.

Phosphonopeptides are important phosphorus analogs of natural peptides and have been widely applied as enzyme inhibitors and antibacterial agents. A series of phosphonodipeptides containing C-terminal α-aminoalkylphosphonic acids was synthesized in satisfactory to good yields conveniently from 2-(N-benzyloxycarbonylamino)alkanamides, aldehydes, and phosphorus trichloride via Mannich-type reaction and subsequent sequential hydrolysis. The reaction mechanism was proposed and verified by (31)P NMR tracing experiments. The current method is an efficient and convenient method for preparation of pho

The storage compounds associated with Tetrasphaera PAO metabolism and the relationship between diversity and P removal.

In enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR), Tetrasphaera can potentially be an abundant and important polyphosphate accumulating organism (PAO), however ongoing questions remain concerning its storage compounds, phosphorus (P) removal capabilities and metabolic behaviour. This study investigated each of these points in an enriched Tetrasphaera culture (95% biovolume). The enriched Tetrasphaera culture fermented amino acids, while also converting and storing diverse amino acids as aspartic and glutamic acid within cells. Subsequent intracellular consumption of these two amino acids during

Study the yield and quality of bitter gourd fruit (Momordica charantia) in inoculation with two species of mycorrhizal fungi and phosphorus fertilizer under different irrigation regimes.

Drought is known to be the most important constraint to the growth and yield of agricultural products in the world, and plant symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can be a way to reduce drought stress negative impacts. A two-year experiment to investigate the factorial combination of mycorrhizal fungi (Glomus mosseae, Glomus intraradices, Control) and phosphorus fertilizer (application and non-application of phosphorus) on fruit yield and phenolic acids changes bitter gourd under different irrigation regimes as a split factorial based on a randomized complete block design.
