INTRODUCTION: According to the Ayurveda Pharmacopeia of Sri Lanka, the fruit of Phyllanthus emblica L. (PE) and the stems of Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Hook.f. and Thomson (TC) are prescribed for skin diseases such as Kushta (eczema) and Visharpa (spreading inflammatory lesions). Classical Ayurvedic texts, Charaka Samhitha and Sushruta Samhitha, describe PE and TC as "elixirs of life" (Rasayana) and widely incorporated them into formulations for dermatological disorders. Their therapeutic effects have been attributed to a range of bioactive phytochemical constituents identified in herbal ex

Ultrasound-assisted flash extraction was used to rapidly extract polysaccharides from Phyllanthus emblica L. fruits (PEPs) with a good yield of 9.73 % ± 0.75 %. Furthermore, the PEPs were fractionated by graded precipitation of 30 %, 60 %, and 90 % (v/v) ethanol solution, and the respective molecular weight polysaccharide fractions, namely PEP-30 (166.88 kDa), PEP-60 (109.14 kDa), and PEP-90 (34.59 kDa) were obtained. The three fractions were composed of similar monosaccharides with galacturonic acid as the main constituent. The slope of R.M.S. radius-Mw curve showed that the three polysacchar

Phyllanthus amarus is a medicinal herb used in traditional Indian medicine for liver disorders. Several researches also show that it acts primarily in the liver, but the molecules were unidentified for liver protective activity. This study was to determine whether the lignans isolated from P. amarus attenuates the D-galactosamine (GalN) / Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)- induced acute hepatitis in mice. Standardize mixture of lignans (slPA) isolated from leaves of P. amarus using automated chromatographic technique was used for experiments. Experimental mice were orally pre-treated with slPA (10, 30

The ability of ethanol extract of Phyllanthus amarus root (EEPA) to decrease bilirubin level and oxidative stress in phenylhydrazine-induced neonatal jaundice in mice was investigated. Administration of phenylhydrazine (75 mg/kg b.w.) significantly elevated total and unconjugated serum bilirubin level compared to control mice. EEPA (5, 10, and 20 mg/kg b.w., oral) dose-dependently reduced the bilirubin level. EEPA treatment also upregulated hepatic CAR and CYP3A1, accounting for its ability to facilitate bilirubin clearance. A single dose of EEPA (20 mg/kg b.w.) induced higher level of bilirub

Humans are frequently exposed to various carcinogens capable of inducing cancer in multiple organs. Phyllanthus emblica (P. emblica) is known for its strong antioxidant properties and potential in cancer prevention. However, its effectiveness against combined carcinogens remains relatively unexplored. This study aimed to assess the chemopreventive potential of the ethanolic extract of P. emblica fruits against preneoplastic lesions in the liver and colon using a rat model. Rats were administered with diethylnitrosamine (DEN) and 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH) to induce hepato- and colon carcinoge

A key challenge for phytoextraction is the identification of high efficiency, growth-supporting, and low cost chelating agents. To date, no substance has satisfied all above criteria. This study investigated nine traditional Chinese herbs and found that Phyllanthus emblica fruit (FPE) extract could be utilised as an optimal chelate for the phytoextraction of cadmium (Cd)-contaminated soils. FPE application into soil at a ratio of 0.1% (w/w) significantly increased extractable Cd (by 43%) compared to the control. The success of FPE as a chelating agent was attributed to high quantities of polyp

The aim of this study was to investigate the hepatoprotective action of the protein fraction of Phyllanthus niruri against acetaminophen (APAP) hepatotoxicity. The partially purified protein fraction of P. niruri was injected intraperitoneally in mice either prior to (preventive) or after the induction of toxicity (curative). Levels of different liver marker enzymes in serum and different antioxidant enzymes, as well as lipid peroxidation in total liver homogenates were measured in normal, control (toxicity induced) and P. niruri protein fraction-treated mice. P. niruri significantly reduced t

The therapeutic benefits of Phyllanthus niruri (PN) are well-known, particularly in traditional medicine. Nanoemulsion technology has enhanced its bioavailability and efficacy, but potential nanotoxic effects, especially on male reproductive health, are not fully understood. This study examines the cytotoxic and genotoxic impacts of Phyllanthus niruri nanoemulsions (PNNE) of different sizes on TM4 Sertoli cells, focusing on their effects on the blood-testis barrier (BTB). PNNE of two distinct sizes, were prepared using spontaneous emulsification. The cytotoxicity of these formulations was asse

Malaria control efforts have been hampered due to the emergence of resistant malaria parasite strains and the coinciding events of Covid-19. The quest for more effective and safe treatment alternatives is driving a slew of new studies that must be accelerated if malaria can be overcome. Due to its reported antimalarial activity, we studied the effects of extract and fractions of Phyllanthus nivosus leaf on Plasmodium lactate dehydrogenase (pLDH) activity using an in vitro assay. This was followed by an anti-plasmodial study using Plasmodium berghei-infected mice and an in silico identification

Liver fibrosis is a pathological variation caused by almost all chronic liver injuries. As an edible and medicinal natural resource, Phyllanthus emblica (PE) has been reported to possess hepatoprotective, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities and may have an ameliorating effect on hepatic fibrosis. To investigate the protective effect of the aqueous extract of PE (AEPE) against liver fibrosis and to uncover its related mechanisms, the chemical profile of AEPE was characterized by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and sulfuric acid-phenol method. Ameliorative effects of diff

This study investigated the hepatoprotective effect of two Indian medicinal plants Tinospora cordifolia (Tc), Phyllanthus emblica (Pe), and their combination, in a rat model of isoniazid, rifampicin and pyrazinamide induced hepatic damage. Hepatic damage was assessed using a composite score assigned to histopathological findings of degeneration, necrosis and fibrosis. The antituberculosis treatment (ATT), when given for 90 days, induced significant degeneration and necrosis (score: 7.5; p < 0.01 vs vehicle) associated with morphological changes. However, no change was found in the serum biliru

Without a vaccine, hepatitis C virus (HCV) remains a global medical and socio-economic burden, predisposing about 170 million carriers worldwide to end-stage liver diseases including cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Although the recently developed direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) have revolutionized hepatitis C treatment, most of them are unsuitable for monotherapy due to risks of resistance, thus necessitating combination with interferon (IFN)-alpha, ribavirin, or additional DAAs. More importantly, the high cost associated with the DAAs restricts their accessibility to most parts of the

Juice wine fermented at 20 °C (FW) and pomace-containing juice wine fermented at 20 °C (PW) were investigated, with juice wine fermented at 26 °C (CK) included as a conventional-temperature reference. Microbial communities and volatile profiles were characterised in all treatments using 16S rRNA gene and ITS amplicon sequencing and HS-SPME-GC-MS, whereas untargeted LC-MS metabolomics compared FW and PW. The treatments exhibited distinct stage-dependent microbial succession and chemical profiles. Saccharomyces-assigned sequences dominated the fungal communities, whereas bacterial composition va

Tilapia Lake virus (TiLV) is an emerging pathogen causing up to 90% mortality in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) farming. Enhancing tilapia health by modulating the non-specific immune system with herbal immunostimulants offers a promising strategy to mitigate TiLV outbreaks. This study evaluated the prophylactic efficacy of Gooseberry (Phyllanthus acidus) and Oregano (Coleus amboinicus) extracts against TiLV. Crude ethanolic extracts were prepared by Soxhlet extraction and screened for preliminary phytochemicals. The crude extracts were incorporated into the commercial pellet feed at varying
