There are many different types of skin neoplasms in children and most are benign. Dermatologists should be able to differentiate between the various types of benign skin neoplasms and be able to recommend optimal treatment to concerned patients. The neck structures are located very superficially and are therefore easy to explore by ultrasound examination. Ultrasonography is crucial for the detection of neck pathologies in children. Pilomatrical differentiation can be observed in a variety of benign and malignant tumors, with the most common prototype being pilomatricoma. Pilomatricoma often presents in the deep dermis or subcutis, and the sole involvement of epidermis is extremely rare. In our current case series, specimens from 5 patients were included with an average age of 68 years. All lesions presented as solitary verrucous or keratotic papules on the extremities, with 1 lesion having a prominent horn. Pilomatricoma is a common benign tumor in children. We present a review of the literature with the aim of helping clinicians manage these patients. A detailed review of the literature was performed in the PubMed database using an exhaustive list of Medical Subject Heading words. One thousand four hundred fifty-eight children were described in retrospective series and case reports. An associated disease was found in 32 children (2.2%), most of whom had several pilomatricomas (n = 23); 9 had a single lesion. We report a case of follicular hybrid cyst arising in a nevus sebaceus. Histopathologic findings showed one part with the features of a trichilemmal cyst and the other part with those of a pilomatricoma. To our knowledge, this is the first case of follicular hybrid cyst associated with nevus sebaceus. We consider that the cyst in our case is derived from the hair matrix and from the follicular isthmus.

The expression of involucrin was examined in 23 skin tumours of hair follicle origin, 17 tumours of sweat gland origin and three tumours of unknown origin, using an immunoperoxidase technique. Cutaneous mixed tumors show a wide range of differentiation and metaplastic changes in their components. However, pilomatricomal differentiation is a rare phenomenon and, when present, is usually only focal. We report a case of a 59-year-old male who presented with a large tumor in the scalp.
