Exploiting the Evolutionary Relationship between Malarial Parasites and Plants To Develop New Herbicides.

Herbicide resistance is driving a need to develop new herbicides. The evolutionary relationship between apicomplexan parasites, such as those causing malaria, and plants is close enough that many antimalarial drugs are herbicidal and so represent novel scaffolds for herbicide development. Using a compound library from the Medicines for Malaria Venture, the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, and a physicochemical database of known herbicides, a compound was discovered that showed post-emergence herbicidal activity equal to commercial herbicides. Using structure-activity analysis, important point

Current status of viral expression systems in plants and perspectives for oral vaccines development.

During the last 25 years, the technology to produce recombinant vaccines in plant cells has evolved from modest proofs of the concept to viable technologies adopted by some companies due to significant improvements in the field. Viral-based expression strategies have importantly contributed to this success owing to high yields, short production time (which is in most cases free of tissue culture steps), and the implementation of confined processes for production under GMPs. Herein the distinct expression systems based on viral elements are analyzed. This review also presents the outlook on how

Developing plant-based vaccines against neglected tropical diseases: where are we?

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) impair the lives of 1 billion people worldwide, and threaten the health of millions more. Although vaccine candidates have been proposed to prevent some NTDs, no vaccine is available at the market yet. Vaccines against NTDs should be low-cost and needle-free to reduce the logistic cost of their administration. Plant-based vaccines meet both requirements: plant systems allow antigen production at low cost, and also yield an optimal delivery vehicle that prevents or delays digestive hydrolysis of vaccine antigens. This review covers recent reports on the develo

CsNAC083 and CsVND1 are associated with tea plant leaf angle through xylem development and lignin deposition.

Tea (Camellia sinensis) is an important perennial horticultural crop, but the genetic control of leaf angle, a key trait affecting plant architecture and harvesting efficiency, remains unclear. In this study, we measured leaf angles at different leaf positions and examined the anatomy of the bending region between the leaf midrib and the main stem across 12 tea cultivars. Hongyan 1(HY 1) with large leaf angles and Hongyan 4(HY 4) with small leaf angles were selected for transcriptome analysis. Differentially expressed genes were mainly enriched in hormone signaling, MAPK signaling, and phenylp

Small peptides play a key role as messengers in plant growth, development and abiotic stress resistance.

Against the backdrop of global environmental change, plant growth and development face multiple challenges, and a range of abiotic stresses seriously affect their normal growth. In recent years, plant small peptides (SPs)-widely defined as peptides of fewer than 100 amino acids-have emerged as important signaling molecules at the forefront of stress response strategies, playing a key role in regulating plant growth, development, and stress adaptation. This paper reviews the classification of small peptides and their effects on plant growth and development, with a particular focus on the dynami

Development of species-specific PCR for authentication of medicinal plant Bupleuri Radix and its common adulterants.

Bupleuri Radix is a widely used herbal plant, and its official source recognized by Chinese pharmacopoeia is the dried roots of Bupleurum chinense DC. or Bupleurum scorzonerifolium Willd. Although two species share core therapeutic functions, differences in the types of chemical components lead to different clinical applications. Currently, two species have not been distinguished in pharmacopeial standards. Therefore, we hypothesize prescribing them separately based on the pharmacological characteristics may provide better clinical efficacy. Additionally, Bupleurum marginatum Wall. ex DC. var

Novel aurone-derived piperazine sulfonamides: Development and mechanisms of action as immunostimulants against plant bacterial diseases.

Bacterial diseases pose a significant threat to the sustainable production of crops. Given the unsatisfactory performance and poor eco-compatibility of conventional bactericides, here we present a series of newly structured bactericides that are inspiringly designed by aurone found in plants of the Asteraceae family. These aurone-derived compounds contain piperazine sulfonamide motifs and have shown promising in vitro performance against Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae, Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola and Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri, in particular, compound II23 achieved minimum half-maxim

Development of a new Collateral Cleavage-independent CRISPR/Cas12a based easy detection system for plant viruses.

Plant virus spread through various means, from mechanically to the insect vectors and act as obligate parasite, therefore, are extremely challenging to eradicate. Geminiviruses are an important class of viruses which have reported extensively in last two decades on several new hosts. They infect wide range of annual crops and perineal shrubs, therefore, essentially required to detect them on field and dispose to check their vector transmission to healthy crops. In this study, we have chosen two important begomovirus viz. Mungbean yellow mosaic India virus which infect wide range of leguminous

Knockdown of Fa-miR159/160 reprograms plant development and improves heat-stress resistance in tall fescue.

MicroRNA159/160 (miR159/160) has been implicated in plant development and stress resistance in annual crops and Arabidopsis, yet their functional roles in perennial cool-season forage and turf grass remain elusive. Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) is one main perennial cool-season forage and turfgrass species worldwide. Here, we found that Fa-miR159/160 has 7/4 copies in tall fescue, respectively. Knockdown of both Fa-miR159 and Fa-miR160 (STTM159/160) using the short tandem target mimics (STTM) system resulted in a dwarf phenotype with higher tiller density, lower growth rate levels,

Changes in the expression pattern of OsWUS negatively regulate plant stature and panicle development in rice.

WUSCHEL (WUS) and WUSCHEL-RELATED HOMEOBOX (WOX) encode transcription factors and play important roles in regulating the formation and maintenance of shoot and floral meristems. OsWUS have distinct functions in meristem development with slightly tuned expression. However, the mechanisms regulating the specific expression of OsWUS need to be further explored. In this study, an abnormal expression mutant of OsWUS, called Dwarf and aberrant panicle 1 (Dap1) was used. In order to identify the causal gene in Dap1, high-efficiency thermal asymmetric interlaced (hiTAIL)-PCR and co-segregation analysi

Syntaxin of plants71 plays essential roles in plant development and stress response via regulating pH homeostasis.

SYP71, a plant-specific Qc-SNARE with multiple subcellular localization, is essential for symbiotic nitrogen fixation in nodules in Lotus, and is implicated in plant resistance to pathogenesis in rice, wheat and soybean. Arabidopsis SYP71 is proposed to participate in multiple membrane fusion steps during secretion. To date, the molecular mechanism underlying SYP71 regulation on plant development remains elusive. In this study, we clarified that AtSYP71 is essential for plant development and stress response, using techniques of cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, and trans

Development of a laboratory-scale leaching plant for metal extraction from fly ash by thiobacillus strains.

Semicontinuous biohydrometallurgical processing of fly ash from municipal waste incineration was performed in a laboratory-scale leaching plant (LSLP) by using a mixed culture of Thiobacillus thiooxidans and Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The LSLP consisted of three serially connected reaction vessels, reservoirs for a fly ash suspension and a bacterial stock culture, and a vacuum filter unit. The LSLP was operated with an ash concentration of 50 g liter, and the mean residence time was 6 days (2 days in each reaction vessel). The leaching efficiencies (expressed as percentages of the amounts appl

Temperature-dependent seedling development in native and alien herbaceous plants and associations with naturalization extent.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Temperature-dependent responses during early seedling development may contribute to variation in naturalization among herbaceous plants, yet experimental evidence remains limited. We compared how temperature affected leaf development in 123 dicotyledonous species native or alien to Central Europe and tested whether species-level temperature-dependent developmental metrics were associated with reported global naturalization extent. METHODS: We recorded the timing of appearance of the first five true-leaf stages (D1-D5) and calculated leaf appearance rate (LAR) in 64 native

Plant-Made Vaccines Targeting Enteric Pathogens-Safe Alternatives for Vaccination in Developing Countries.

Enteric diseases by pathogenic organisms are one of the leading causes of death worldwide, particularly in low-income countries. Despite antibiotics, access to clean water and vaccination are the most economically affordable options to prevent those infections and their health consequences. Vaccines, such as those approved for rotavirus and cholera, have played a key role in preventing several enteric diseases. However, vaccines for other pathogens are still in clinical trials. Distribution and cost remain significant barriers to vaccine access in developing regions due to poor healthcare infr

Development of a New Micropropagation Protocol and Transfer of In Vitro Plants to In Vivo Conditions for Cascade Hop.

The vegetative propagation of hops, despite being a reliable method, is not very common due to the unavailability of the plant material. In this study, the technique of in vitro propagation was applied to the Cascade variety of Humulus lupulus L. The plant material was collected from a private field in Sicily; the explants were subjected to sterilization before in vitro culture. Single-node explants were placed in in vitro culture in nine different culture media for multiplication. Thidiazuron (TDZ), Benzyladenine (BAP) and meta-Topoline (mT) were tested for multiplication phase. For the rooti

Plant extracts for developing mosquito larvicides: From laboratory to the field, with insights on the modes of action.

In the last decades, major research efforts have been done to investigate the insecticidal activity of plant-based products against mosquitoes. This is a modern and timely challenge in parasitology, aimed to reduce the frequent overuse of synthetic pesticides boosting resistance development in mosquitoes and causing serious threats to human health and environment. This review covers the huge amount of literature available on plant extracts tested as mosquito larvicides, particularly aqueous and alcoholic ones, due to their easy formulation in water without using surfactants. We analysed result
