Establishment of immune homeostasis in insect vectors enabling persistent-propagative plant pathogen infection.

Insect-borne plant pathogens pose a major threat to global agriculture and cause substantial economic losses. As natural vectors, insects display high tolerance to infection by plant pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, and phytoplasmas, while exhibiting no significant pathological effects. This suggests that they have evolved effective strategies to maintain immune homeostasis, thereby restricting pathogen infection to nonpathogenic levels. In this review, we summarize recent advances in understanding these immune mechanisms, including Toll, JAK-STAT, RNA interference, autophagy, apoptosis

Occupational infection due to Brucella abortus S19 among workers involved in vaccine production in Argentina.

The pathological consequences of exposure to the vaccine strain Brucella abortus S19 were evaluated in 30 employees from vaccine-manufacturing plants. Active brucellosis was diagnosed in 21 subjects, of whom only five recalled an accidental exposure. Clinical manifestations were mild, and only one patient presented a complication. After antimicrobial therapy, initially symptomatic patients either experienced clinical remission or had mild persistent symptoms. This is the first study reporting infection by B. abortus S19 among workers from vaccine-manufacturing plants, which in many cases was a

Cerebellar ataxia suspected to be caused by Oxytropis glabra poisoning in western Mongolian goats.

In the last five years in western Mongolia, a neurological disorder and resultant economic loss have developed in goats, sheep, cattle and horses: association of the disease with ingestion of Oxytropis glabra, a toxic plant, was suggested. Affected goats showed neurological signs, including ataxia, incoordination, hind limb paresis, fine head tremor and nystagmus. Three goats, one with moderate clinical signs and the other two with severe clinical signs, were necropsied and examined to describe and characterize the histologic, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural lesions. Although no gross

Toxic hepatitis in black patients in natal.

The clinical and pathological features of toxic centrilobular zonal necrosis in Natal Blacks are described. It is suggested that this condition may be caused by the toxic action of Callilepis laureola (known to the Zulu as 'impila'). This plant and other herbs are used by many Blacks for self-medication or are prescribed by herbalists and witchdoctors.

[Zoonotic infections in persons working in plants producing meat and bone meal].

The present study has revealed that persons working at offal and bone processing plants show no specific pathology, peculiar to such plants, in the state of their health and severe mass diseases among these persons are absent. Nevertheless, rather frequent occurrence of erysipeloid should be noted. The survey of workers employed at different stages of the production process has revealed the presence of ornithosis, listeriosis and leptospirosis infections. No clinically manifest cases of these diseases have been detected. The infection of individual workers occurs in the process of production a

Neuroprotective potential of indian herbs in ischaemic stroke: a comprehensive review of pharmacological insights, therapeutic gaps, and future directions.

Stroke is the second most common cause of mortality worldwide and a major contributor to acquired disability. Current treatment options, such as recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (r-tPA), are restricted by a narrow therapeutic window and an increased risk of cerebral haemorrhage. Herbal medicines demonstrate considerable potential in the management of ischaemic stroke by modulating key pathological processes, including blood-brain barrier disruption, neuroinflammation, apoptosis, oxidative stress, glutamate excitotoxicity, and mitochondrial dysfunction. This review identified the gaps f

NIR Fluorescent Probe for In Situ Bioimaging of Endogenous H2S in Rice Roots under Al3+ and Flooding Stresses.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is one of the typical reactive sulfur species, which exhibits an important role in regulating both physiological and pathological processes. Recent studies indicate that H2S also serves as a key signaling molecule in a broad range of regulatory processes in plants. However, in situ imaging and detection of the levels of H2S in plant tissues remains a challenge. In this work, a NIR fluorescent probe (HBTP-H2S) was synthesized to achieve H2S imaging in living plant tissues. HBTP-H2S exhibited high sensitivity toward H2S with a large Stokes shift (250 nm). HBTP-H2S could be

Recent advancements in the role of phytochemicals and medicinal plants in prophylaxis and management of Alzheimer's disease.

Medicinal plants and phytochemicals are some of the major sources in the treatment of various neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer's disease (AD). There is no FDA-approved drug to target AD pathology directly. Full cognitive restoration and management of psychosis-like symptoms are still to be achieved. Being comparatively safer with fewer side effects, medicinal plants have been among the major areas of interest to be researched. Several mechanistic pathways are involved in AD including anticholinesterase activity, glutamate toxicity, free radicals generation, Amyloid β (Aβ) toxici

Formulation and production of a blood-free and chemically defined virus production media for VERO cells.

Vaccines provide effective protection against many infectious diseases as well as therapeutics for select pathologies, such as cancer. Many viral vaccines require amplification of virus in cell cultures during manufacture. Traditionally, cell cultures, such as VERO, have been used for virus production in bovine serum-containing culture media. However, due to concerns of potential adventitious agents present in fetal bovine serum (FBS), regulatory agencies suggest avoiding the use of bovine serum in vaccine production. Current serum-free media suitable for VERO-based virus production contains h

Cyanide resistant respiration and the alternative oxidase pathway: A journey from plants to mammals.

In a large number of organisms covering all phyla, the mitochondrial respiratory chain harbors, in addition to the conventional elements, auxiliary proteins that confer adaptive metabolic plasticity. The alternative oxidase (AOX) represents one of the most studied auxiliary proteins, initially identified in plants. In contrast to the standard respiratory chain, the AOX mediates a thermogenic cyanide-resistant respiration; a phenomenon that has been of great interest for over 2 centuries in that energy is not conserved when electrons flow through it. Here we summarize centuries of studies start
