This study addresses current gaps in the 3D printing literature for filament composition (polymer type, color, and brand), aerosol emissions, and human health risks. Six metals (aluminum, magnesium, manganese, chromium, iron, and copper) were found in nonmetal filaments depending on polymer type, color, and brand using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. For copper- and steel-filled filaments, scanning electron microscopy and elemental analysis indicated a higher metal concentration within the filaments than on the surface. More VOCs were emitted from acrylonitrile butadiene styrene

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous image-guided cementoplasty is a medical procedure for strengthening bones structurally altered by disease, such as osteolytic metastasis. This procedure involves injecting biocompatible liquid bone cement, through one or more trocars into the damaged bone. Within a few minutes the bone cement hardens and restores the rigidity of the bony structure. The introduction of this technique in the case of large cancellous bones, such as the pelvis, raises some practical issues such as: how to manage the flow of cement with variable viscosity over time and how to inject a large

Space three dimension (3D) bioprinting provides a precise and bionic tumor model for evaluating the compound effect of the space environment on tumors, thereby providing insight into the progress of the disease and potential treatments. However, space 3D bioprinting faces several challenges, including prelaunch uncertainty, possible liquid leakage, long-term culture in space, automatic equipment control, data acquisition, and transmission. Here, a novel satellite-based 3D bioprinting device with high structural strength, small volume, and low weight (<6 kg) is developed. A microgel-based bipha

BACKGROUND: Paravalvular leaks can be detected in almost 15% of patients after mitral valve prosthesis implantation. This complication can result in congestive heart failure and hemolysis. Despite advancements in non-invasive imaging, percutaneous closure of paravalvular leaks is not always successful. Therefore, efforts are made to improve treatment outcomes by using 3D-printed models of defects as pre-procedural support for interventional cardiologists.
METHODS: Retrospectively, 3D-transesophageal echocardiography recordings of 8 patients with clinically significant mitral paravalvular leak

The field of craniomaxillofacial (CMF) surgery is rich in pathological diversity and broad in the ages that it treats. Moreover, the CMF skeleton is a complex confluence of sensory organs and hard and soft tissue with load-bearing demands that can change within millimeters. Computer-aided design (CAD) and additive manufacturing (AM) create extraordinary opportunities to repair the infinite array of craniomaxillofacial defects that exist because of the aforementioned circumstances. 3D printed scaffolds have the potential to serve as a comparable if not superior alternative to the "gold standard

Percutaneous closure of ventricular septal defect (VSD) can effectively occlude abnormal blood flow between ventricles. However, commonly used Nitinol occlusion devices have non-negligible limitations, such as nondegradability leading to life-threatening embolization; limited device size predisposing to displacement and wear; only a few radiopaque markers resulting in inaccurate positioning. Nevertheless, the exploration of customized, biodegradable, and overall radiopaque occluders is still vacant. Here, overall radiopaque, biodegradable, and dynamic reconfigurable 4D printed VSD occluders ar

Tympanic membrane perforation is a common condition in clinical otolaryngology. Although some eardrum patients can self-heal, a long period of non-healing perforation leads to persistent otitis media, conductive deafness, and poor quality of life. Tympanic membrane repair with autologous materials requires a second incision, and the sampling site may get infected. It is challenging to repair tympanic membranes while maintaining high functionality, safety, affordability, and aesthetics. 3D bioprinting can be used to fabricate tissue patches with materials, factors, and cells in a design manner.

INTRODUCTION: Achieving adequate acetabular correction in multiple planes is essential to the success of periacetabular osteotomy (PAO). Three-dimensional (3D) modeling and printing has the potential to improve preoperative planning by accurately guiding intraoperative correction. The authors therefore asked the following questions: (1) For a patient undergoing a PAO, does use of 3D modeling with intraoperative 3D-printed models create a reproducible surgical plan to obtain predetermined parameters of correction including lateral center edge angle (LCEA), anterior center edge angle (ACEA), Ton

Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology is emerging as a potential new tool for the planning of medical interventions. In the last few years, increasing data have accumulated on its ability to guide interventional cardiology procedures, going beyond initial reports in congenital heart disease settings. In fact, there is compelling evidence on the advantages of a 3D-printed guided strategy for left atrial appendage closure, suggesting a high success rate with optimal device selection and lower radiation load. Furthermore, there is emerging experience in aortic root printing, which may improv

The electrical equivalent circuit for a neuron is composed of common electrical components in a configuration that replicates the passive electrical properties and behaviors of the neural membrane. It is a powerful tool used to derive such fundamental neurophysiological equations as the Hodgkin-Huxley equations, and it is also the basis for well-known exercises that help students to model the passive (Ohmic) properties of the neuronal membrane. Unfortunately, as these exercises require basic knowledge of electronics, they are generally not physically conducted in biomedical courses, but remain
