Naming speed performance and stimulant effects indicate effortful, semantic processing deficits in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

This study investigated rapid automatized naming and effects of stimulant medication in school-age children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with and without concurrent reading disorder (RD). Two ADHD groups (67 ADHD only; 21 ADHD + RD) and a control group of 27 healthy age-matched peers were compared on four variables: color naming speed, letter naming speed, phonologic decoding, and arithmetic computation. Discriminant function analysis (DFA) was conducted to predict group membership. The four variables loaded onto two discriminant functions with good specificity: phonolo

The differential impact of processing speed and cognitive flexibility on cognitive emotion regulation strategies and depression.

INTRODUCTION: Existing cognitive models for depression propose interactions between cognitive emotion regulation strategies (CERS) and cognitive processes. However, often oversimplify these interactions and do not accommodate the complexity of interactions. We aimed to construct and explore the micro-level properties of a network model that can integrate this complexity of the interactions and explore through computational simulations the differential impact of improvements/deterioration in cognitive flexibility and processing speed in the network. METHODS: We used the Leipzig Study for Mind-

The impact of white matter brain lesions on processing speed deficits in systemic lupus erythematosus patients.

BackgroundThe mechanism of cognitive dysfunction in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is still not fully understood. Even though many SLE patients present some neurological dysfunction, including various cognitive deficits, neither a specific pattern of cognitive dysfunction nor specific structural changes associated with cognitive impairment in SLE patients have been established. Moreover, although prevalent and bothersome, cognitive deficits have not been included in the most recent SLE diagnostic criteria.PurposeThe aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the presence o

Functional brain networks related to processing speed and memory in SLE: a connectome-based modelling study.

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive dysfunction is a common neuropsychiatric manifestation in SLE, particularly affecting processing speed (PS) and memory. This study aims to identify behaviourally relevant topological networks of functional connectivity underlying neuropsychological test performances, using connectome-based predictive modelling (CPM). METHODS: Forty-three SLE patients and 34 controls underwent overall cognitive screening, with SLE patients additionally undergoing neurocognitive assessments for PS and memory. Resting-state fMRI was performed to construct functional connectivity matrices. C

Comparative analysis of processing speed impairments in TLE, FLE, and GGE: Theoretical insights and clinical Implications.

In this narrative review, we explore the differences in processing speed (PS) impairments among three epilepsy conditions; Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE), Frontal Lobe Epilepsy (FLE) and Genetic Generalized Epilepsy (GGE) with a focus on Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy (JME). Despite the large body of research focusing on cognition in epilepsy, the intricacies of PS impairments in the epilepsy syndromes have not been fully explored. We investigate the cognitive profiles with focus on PS associated with each of the three conditions, and the neuropsychological methods employed. Furthermore, we evaluat

Structural-functional connectivity bandwidth predicts processing speed in mild traumatic brain Injury: A multiplex network analysis.

An emerging body of work has revealed alterations in structural (SC) and functional (FC) brain connectivity following mild TBI (mTBI), with mixed findings. However, these studies seldom integrate complimentary neuroimaging modalities within a unified framework. Multilayer network analysis is an emerging technique to uncover how white matter organization enables functional communication. Using our novel graph metric (SC-FC Bandwidth), we quantified the information capacity of synchronous brain regions in 53 mild TBI patients (46 females; age mean = 40.2 years (y), σ = 16.7 (y), range: 18-79 (y)

Color Trails Test: A New Set of Data on Cognitive Flexibility and Processing Speed in Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Although schizophrenia patients have been reported to manifest deficits in cognitive flexibility and lower processing speed (measured with i.a., the Color Trails Test, CTT), there still remain a few matters that require further investigation. We have therefore formulated three research aims: 1) to examine the factor structure of CTT in schizophrenia patients and healthy controls, 2) to compare different CTT performance measures in the two groups, 3) to investigate the relationship between these measures and selected psychopathological symptoms in the patient group. METHODS: Sixty-

Simultaneous object perception deficits are related to reduced visual processing speed in amnestic mild cognitive impairment.

Simultanagnosia, an impairment in simultaneous object perception, has been attributed to deficits in visual attention and, specifically, to processing speed. Increasing visual attention deficits manifest over the course of Alzheimer's disease (AD), where the first changes are present already in its symptomatic predementia phase: amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). In this study, we examined whether patients with aMCI due to AD show simultaneous object perception deficits and whether and how these deficits relate to visual attention. Sixteen AD patients with aMCI and 16 age-, gender-, an

Processing speed delays contribute to executive function deficits in individuals with agenesis of the corpus callosum.

Corpus callosum malformation and dysfunction are increasingly recognized causes of cognitive and behavioral disability. Individuals with agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC) offer unique insights regarding the cognitive skills that depend specifically upon callosal connectivity. We examined the impact of AgCC on cognitive inhibition, flexibility, and processing speed using the Color-Word Interference Test (CWIT) and Trail Making Test (TMT) from the Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System. We compared 36 individuals with AgCC and IQs within the normal range to 56 matched controls. The AgCC coh

First-episode schizophrenia patients neuropsychologically within the normal limits: evidence of deterioration in speed of processing.

In apparent contradiction to the notion of cognitive impairment as a core feature of schizophrenia, some studies have described a subgroup of patients neuropsychologically within normal limits. It remains to be determined whether this subgroup has intact cognitive functioning or a higher premorbid functioning that attenuates the evidence of deterioration. Out of a total of 111 patients with FES or schizophreniform disorder, 25 (23%) were classified as cognitive normal (CN) according to criteria based on performance in six basic cognitive dimensions and an overall composite score, and their cog

Brief report: face configuration accuracy and processing speed among adults with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders.

The present study investigates the accuracy and speed of face processing employed by high-functioning adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Two behavioral experiments measured sensitivity to distances between features and face recognition when performance depended on holistic versus featural information. Results suggest adults with ASD were less accurate, but responded as quickly as controls for both tasks. In contrast to previous findings with children, adults with ASD demonstrated a holistic advantage only when the eye region was tested. Both groups recognized large manipulations to

Speed of lower-level auditory and visual processing as a basic factor in dyslexia: electrophysiological evidence.

This study investigated speed of processing (SOP) among college-level adult dyslexic and normal readers in nonlinguistic and sublexical linguistic auditory and visual oddball tasks, and a nonlinguistic cross-modal choice reaction task. Behavioral and electrophysiological (ERP) measures were obtained. The results revealed that between both groups, reaction times (RT) were longer and the latencies of P2 and P3 components occurred later in the visual as compared to auditory oddball tasks. RT and ERP latencies were longest in the cross-modal task. RT and ERP latencies were delayed among dyslexic a

Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors: a therapeutic option for controlling blood pressure associated with delayed cognitive processing speed.

Antihypertensive treatment (AT) is essential for preventing hypertension-related cognitive decline. The goals of this observational study were to compare cognitive performance (CP) between non-hypertensive (NH) volunteers and hypertensive patients and to evaluate the correlation between CP and antihypertensive drugs (AHD). Three groups were constituted: NH (n = 30) [group 1], hypertensive with systolic blood pressure (SBP) < 140 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) < 90 mmHg (n = 54) [group 2] and hypertensive with SBP ≥ 140 or DBP ≥ 90 (n = 31) [group 3]. To analyze the cognitive domains,

Disrupted dynamic functional connectivity of hippocampal subregions mediated the slowed information processing speed in late-life depression.

BACKGROUND: Slowed information processing speed (IPS) is the core contributor to cognitive impairment in patients with late-life depression (LLD). The hippocampus is an important link between depression and dementia, and it may be involved in IPS slowing in LLD. However, the relationship between a slowed IPS and the dynamic activity and connectivity of hippocampal subregions in patients with LLD remains unclear. METHODS: One hundred thirty-four patients with LLD and 89 healthy controls were recruited. Sliding-window analysis was used to assess whole-brain dynamic functional connectivity (dFC)

DNA Methylation and Resting Brain Function Mediate the Association between Childhood Urbanicity and Better Speed of Processing.

Urbanicity has been suggested to affect cognition, but the underlying mechanism remains unknown. We examined whether epigenetic modification (DNA methylation, DNAm), and brain white matter fiber integrity (fractional anisotropy, FA) or local spontaneous brain function activity (regional homogeneity, ReHo) play roles in the association between childhood urbanicity and cognition based on 497 healthy Chinese adults. We found significant correlation between childhood urbanicity and better cognitive performance. Multiset canonical correlation analysis (mCCA) identified an intercorrelated DNAm-FA-Re

Processing Speed and Time since Diagnosis Predict Adaptive Functioning Measured with WeeFIM in Pediatric Brain Tumor Survivors.

(1) Background: Brain tumor (BT) survivors show difficulties in the acquisition of developmental milestones, related to academic achievement, vocational employment, social relationships, and autonomy. The skills underlying adaptive functioning (AF) are usually damaged in BT survivors due to the presence of the brain tumor, treatment-related factors, and other neurological sequelae. In this study, we aimed to explore the contribution of different cognitive factors in children with BT to AF, considering diagnosis-related variables. (2) Methods: Standardized cognitive assessment was undertaken an
