Redefining Professionalism in Disability Services: Digital Transformation, Boundary Work, and Professional Capital in Frontline Care During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, frontline care workers in day centre services for adults with intellectual disabilities rapidly adapted their roles through use of digital technologies. This study examines how these developments shaped professional roles and identities. METHOD: The study draws on qualitative interviews with 14 frontline staff and 5 managers in day centres that shifted from on-site to remote services. Thematic analysis was guided by the concepts of boundary work and professional capital. RESULTS: Digitalisation temporarily reshaped professional identity by enabling i

Developing relational competence in psychotherapy training: a qualitative study of trainees' perspectives.

Relational competence is a key determinant of psychotherapy outcomes, yet its development during training remains insufficiently understood. The present study adopts a qualitative, trainee-centered approach to examine how psychotherapy trainees conceptualize relational competences, evaluate their strengths and limitations, and identify the experiences most influential in their development. Forty-nine trainees from a four-year psychotherapy training program completed a structured interview, and data were analyzed using inductive qualitative content analysis. Findings revealed four main themes:

Identifying core competencies for community oral health practice among dental hygienists: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Community oral health practice increasingly requires dental hygienists to perform prevention-oriented, population-based, and interprofessional roles beyond traditional chairside clinical care. However, existing competency frameworks primarily emphasize clinical practice or general professional competencies, and an integrated competency framework specifically designed for community oral health practice remains unavailable. This study aimed to identify core competencies for community oral health practice among dental hygienists through a scoping review. METHODS: A scoping review was

Contextualizing Competence: Language and LGBT-Based Competency in Health Care.

Changes in the language and terminology used to refer to individuals identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT), as well as how best to discuss issues of sexual and gender identity, can prove challenging for health care providers due to (1) lack of training; (2) interdisciplinary issues; and (3) prejudices on personal and institutional levels. Given the importance of language in the relationship between health care provider and patient as well as the myriad ways in which language can reflect knowledge, skills, and attitudes, we contend that language is both a facilitator and

Competency in surgical residency training: defining and raising the bar.

Competency-based surgical residency training is rapidly becoming the norm across surgical specialties. Ensuring that graduating surgeons are competent to deliver the necessary services and skills to their patients remains a seminal objective of training programs. Defining surgical competence, the measures used to assess and quantify that competence, and the criteria used to judge whether it has been achieved are critical issues. The bar that surgical residency programs have established is, and must continue to be, set very high. Definitions of competency differ across disciplines. In education

Foundational Competencies and Responsibilities of a Research Software Engineer: Current State and Suggestions for Future Directions.

The term Research Software Engineer, or RSE, emerged a little over 10 years ago as a way to represent individuals working in the research community but focusing on software development. The term has been widely adopted and there are a number of high-level definitions of what an RSE is. However, the roles of RSEs vary depending on the institutional context they work in. At one end of the spectrum, RSE roles may look similar to a traditional research role. At the other extreme, they resemble that of a software engineer in industry. Most RSE roles inhabit the space between these two extremes. The

Spiritual Care Competence in Palliative Care: A Concept Analysis.

Care is a multidimensional concept that includes spirituality as a dynamic and integrative aspect of human experience. Integrating spirituality into clinical practice enables a more comprehensive response to the full spectrum of human needs, which is why spiritual care competence emerges as an aptitude that fits the profile and skills to be developed by those working on care provision. Regrettably, not enough attention has been paid to spiritual care competence largely due to the lack of knowledge of professionals and what this entails. Therefore, this study aims to define the main attributes

The revised American Psychological Association guidelines for clinical supervision: Rationale, revisions, and implications for practice and scholarship.

Clinical supervision is foundational to the training of psychologists and protection of public welfare, yet concerns about its quality have persisted across decades of psychotherapy scholarship and practice. The American Psychological Association (2014, 2015) Guidelines for Clinical Supervision in Health Service Psychology provided the first comprehensive, competency-based framework for supervision practice in psychology. After a decade of its adoption, supervision research has advanced, and important additions to the original guidelines were introduced in 2025 to address these developments. T

Why can't they "Go back"? - A multi-group comparative analysis of pre-service teachers' hometown return intention in local universities based on latent profile analysis.

The high-quality development of rural education urgently requires strengthening the supply of outstanding rural teachers. Based on Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT), a survey of 6,546 teacher education students from local universities in Heilongjiang Province revealed that the willingness to teach in rural areas among three identified profiles-the Weak Foundation Profile, the Development-Oriented Profile, and the Excellence-Prepared Profile-is significantly influenced by academic year and family capital. This influence manifests differentiated patterns via the "environment-person-behaviour

What are We Measuring in Anatomy Education? An Exploratory Mapping from Anatomical Learning to Clinical Competence.

Anatomical knowledge is a necessary foundation for clinical practice, but clinical competence develops progressively through its integration with other foundational sciences and supervised clinical experience. The extent to which anatomy education research evaluates downstream application of anatomical learning remains unclear. In this Perspective, supported by an exploratory metadata-based mapping, we examined whether reported outcomes are concentrated at proximal educational levels or extend to clinical performance and healthcare impact. A Scopus search conducted on 2 June 2026 retrieved 19,

Workforce Readiness for Advance Care Planning in Intellectual Disability Services.

CONTEXT: Advance Care Planning (ACP) improves communication, goal-concordant care, and end-of-life outcomes for people with serious illness. For people with intellectual disabilities (ID), ACP is essential for promoting autonomy but remains inconsistently implemented. Professional caregivers in disability services often provide long-term support and may be key facilitators of ACP; however, their preparedness for this role remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate workforce readiness for ACP in intellectual disability services by examining caregivers' conceptual knowledge, self-perceived compet

Flourishing under constraint: character education and virtue ethics as the foundation of professionalism in medical education and clinical practice.

Contemporary biomedical ethics has been shaped largely by principle-based and outcome-oriented frameworks, yet these approaches insufficiently account for the role of character in clinical judgement and professional formation on which their fruitful use depends. This paper develops a systems-aware virtue-ethical framework for medical education in which professionalism is understood as a sustained mode of professional agency arising from the coordinated exercise of cultivated moral and epistemic character, clinical competence, and practical wisdom within institutional conditions. Drawing on neo
