BACKGROUND: Prior studies have identified age as a factor in determining an individual's likelihood of receiving a prosthesis following a lower limb amputation. These studies are limited to specific subsets of the general population and are unable to account for preamputation characteristics within their study populations. Our study seeks to determine the effect of preamputation characteristics on the probability of receiving a prosthesis for the general population in the United States.
OBJECTIVE: To identify preamputation characteristics that predict of the likelihood of receiving a prosthes

A long-term survey of a large number of children fitted with an electrically powered upper-limb prosthesis seems not to have been reported in the literature. Children with upper-limb deficiencies (congenital or traumatic) were fitted with an electrically powered upper-limb prosthesis in Ontario during the 18-year period of 1965-1983. Seventy-eight patients responded to a questionnaire or were interviewed by telephone. The dropout rate in children with a below-elbow amputation was similar to that reported in below-elbow child amputees wearing a conventional body-powered prosthesis (10% vs. 13%)

One hundred and one patients with through-knee amputations attending the Manchester limb-fitting centre are reviewed. Most amputations were performed for trauma or vascular disease. The interval from amputation to measurement for the first prosthesis averaged 12 weeks in cases of primary healing, and 21 weeks when healing was delayed. Artificial limbs were successfully fitted to 83%, and only 10% failed to use either a limb or a pylon. Three-quarters of those with outdoor mobility returned to work.Disarticulation through the knee has several advantages over above-knee amputation: in particular

BACKGROUND: The incidence of major lower extremity amputation (MLA) is related to increasing rates of diabetes mellitus and peripheral arterial disease. Factors which influence functional mobility following MLA are less known. We aimed to investigate determinants of improved prosthetic fitting rate and greater functional mobility following MLA in patients with vascular disease.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of adults who underwent MLA for vascular disease at a tertiary center from June 2016 to November 2022. Patients were stratified by prosthesis fitting completion. Functiona

BACKGROUND: Transfemoral amputation (TFA) is a salvage procedure for unreconstructable failed total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Prior studies have reported poor outcomes, patient survival, and prosthetic use. The purpose of this study was to analyze patient outcomes and prosthetic utilization in a contemporary group of patients undergoing TFA in the setting of a TKA.
METHODS: We reviewed 112 patients undergoing TFA with a prior TKA. Indications for amputation and postoperative functional measures were captured through chart review. Patients were contacted by survey to assess the quality of life.

Micro-orbitism which follows the very early arrested development of the optic vesicles hinders the fitting of a prosthesis. A total enlargement of the orbit is proposed which restores the normal dimensions and enables facial symmetry to be re-established. The risks and advantages of this procedure are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Women with lower extremity amputations (LEAs) tend to have poorer prosthesis-related outcomes than men, although the literature is sparse. To our knowledge, there are no prior studies examining prosthesis-related outcomes of women veterans with LEAs.
OBJECTIVE: To examine gender differences (overall and by type of amputation) among veterans who underwent LEAs between 2005 and 2018, received care at the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) prior to undergoing amputation, and were prescribed a prosthesis. It was hypothesized that compared to men, women would report lower satisfactio

OBJECTIVE: The role of amputation and myoelectric prosthetic fitting for hand function in traumatic pan-brachial plexus injury (pBPI) continues to evolve. This study evaluated the function and activity performance of patients with traumatic pBPI who underwent amputation and prosthetic fitting with a myoelectric prosthesis (MEP) for hand function.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of adult patients who underwent elective amputation after sustaining a pBPI followed by MEP for hand function was performed. Demographics, mechanisms of injury, amputation details, and outcomes were collected from me

Traumatic upper extremity amputation is a life-altering event, and recovery of function depends on proper surgical management and postoperative rehabilitation. Many injuries require revision amputation and postoperative prosthesis fitting. Care should be taken to preserve maximal length of the limb and motion of the remaining joints. Skin grafting or free tissue transfer may be necessary for coverage to allow preservation of length. Early prosthetic fitting within 30 days of surgery should be performed so the amputee can start rehabilitation while the wound is healing and the stump is maturing

This case note concerns an elderly amputee who presented with delayed healing in the stump. The use of a Silastic foam dressing is described which allowed both prosthetic fitting and final healing to occur simultaneously. The patient's stump ultimately healed and the subject was successfully discharged home walking with his prosthesis.

The clinical evaluation of an ultralightweight polypropylene below-knee prosthesis conducted by the University of Strathclyde identified a number of potential problems which can arise from the use of polypropylene. This paper describes the problems associated with manufacture, loss of alignment and fitting, and indicates handling techniques to minimize these problems.

Conventional prosthetic sockets can be uncomfortable and restrictive to elbow flexion when fitted on short forearm stumps due to their high trimline. We report improved patient experience after switching to a locking silicone-liner socket in conjunction with a lightweight aesthetic prosthesis in two congenital transradial amputees with short stumps who were previously dissatisfied with their conventional prosthesis. To reduce weight, the forearm section of the prosthesis was constructed using a lightweight design. Seven of eight attributes, namely aesthetics, comfort, suspension, ease of donni

The clinical, histological and immunohistological features of a Kaposi-like acroangiodermatitis in an above-knee amputation stump are reported. There was no evidence for an underlying arteriovenous malformation and the irregular purple-blue skin lesions resulted from chronic circulatory disturbance of the distal stump caused by a poorly fitting suction-type prosthesis.

OBJECTIVE: Dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa is a rare disease characterized by widespread blistering of the skin and mucous membranes, which may ultimately prompt limb amputation. In this context, the outcome of fitting a prosthesis to a chronically wounded stump is not well known. Our patient's experience (with 15 years of follow-up) should contribute to better knowledge of this topic.
CASE REPORT: A 37-year-old man presented with severe dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa. Recurrent skin carcinoma had led to an amputation below the knee. Despite incessant development of blisters on the stump a

The length of a stump plays an important role when using a prosthesis. It is essential to have an adequate length in the stump in order to apply the prosthesis. Therefore, it is necessary to attempt to lengthen short stumps. The authors have reviewed the results in 2 patients who had such lengthening of stumps one due to traumatic amputation of the forearm at 6.25 cm distally from the elbow and the other due to congenital deficiency of the radius and ulna treated by the Ilizarov techinque to improve the fitting of prostheses. Sixty percent (60%) and 40% lengthening was achieved respectively. A

BACKGROUND: Little empirical evidence supports the widely held belief that early upper limb prosthesis fitting is associated with improved longer-term outcomes.
OBJECTIVES: To quantify the relationship between timing of initial prosthesis receipt and (1) continued prosthesis use, (2) hours of use, and (3) satisfaction.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey study of 698 Veterans with major upper limb amputation.
METHODS: Participant characteristics were described by time to receipt of initial prosthesis. Logistic regressions examined relationships between receipt timing, prosthesis use, and o
