The Correlation of Positive and Negative Symptoms (PANSS Scores) in Patients with Schizophrenia According to Gender.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is chronic and debilitating psychiatric disorder, characterized by a constellation of clinical signs and symptoms that are categorized into distinct positive, negative, disorganization and cognitive symptom domains. The outcome of the disease is better in female patients compared to male patients who have a higher risk of rehospitalization and twice as long duration of hospital treatment. In male patients with schizophrenia an earlier onset of the disease, negative symptoms and a more severe clinical picture are noted, with a less promising therapeutic response to neu

The structure of the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised: Global distress, Somatization, Hostility, and Phobic Anxiety scales are reliable and robust across community and clinical samples from four European countries.

While the reliability of SCL-90-R subscales is often questioned, five relatively recent European studies have examined the factor structure of SCL-90-R using a bifactor model and concluded that most of these subscales are reliable. However, examination of their results shows that three subscales, Somatization, Hostility, and Phobic Anxiety, consistently had significantly higher reliability than the other six across clinical and community samples recruited in three very different European countries, Greece, Hungary, and the Netherlands. The objective of this study was to examine whether this "t

Effects of a 12-Session Symptom Self-Management Course on Forensic Psychiatric Inpatients' Auditory Hallucinations and Anxiety.

The purpose of this clinical dissemination project was to evaluate changes in intensity of unpleasant auditory hallucinations (AH) and level of anxiety after forensic psychiatric inpatients attended an evidence-based symptom self-management course. The course was taught twice to patients with schizophrenic disorders. Data were collected using five self-rating measures. Seventy percent of participants reported reduced AH and anxiety; 100% reported helpfulness of being with others with similar symptoms; 90% would recommend the course to others. The course facilitator reported: improved communica

The Role of Neurophysiological Biomarkers in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a highly debilitating psychiatric disorder with a high rate of treatment resistance. Biomarkers for obsessive-compulsive disorder may assist clinicians by predicting response to treatments and prognosis. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to review the literature with regards to two of the more easily ascertainable and relatively inexpensive physiological biomarkers, i.e., heart rate variability and electroencephalography. METHODS: A narrative review of the literature was conducted. RESULTS: Decreased heart rate variability has been associated w

Characterizing the longitudinal course of symptoms and functioning in bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: The course of Bipolar Disorder (BD) is highly variable, with marked inter and intra-individual differences in symptoms and functioning. In this study, we identified illness trajectories across major clinical domains that could have etiological, prognostic, and therapeutic relevance. METHODS: Using the Systematic Treatment Enhancement Program for Bipolar Disorder (STEP-BD) study, we performed univariate and multivariate trajectory modeling of depressive symptoms, manic symptoms, and psychosocial functioning. Multinomial regression was performed to identify baseline variables associ

Serum Level of Growth-Associated Protein 43 Is Associated with First-Episode Schizophrenia Patients without Antipsychotic Drugs Treatment.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Nerve growth-associated protein 43 (GAP43) is closely related to neural development, axon regeneration, and synaptic reconstruction and is one of the important markers of neuronal damage. Therefore, in our study, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to analyze the serum level of GAP43 protein in schizophrenia patients (n = 188), healthy controls (n = 200), and bipolar disorder patients (n = 200). The positive and negative syndrome scale (PANSS) was used to evaluate the mental status of schizophrenia patients, and the Scale of Social Function in Psychosis Inpatients (SSPI) was use

Different measures for auditory hallucinations in populations with psychosis. The Validation of the Spanish versions of the Auditory Vocal Hallucination Rating Scale (AVHRS) and the Positive and Useful Voices Inquiry (PUVI).

INTRODUCTION: An updated summary of the most used instruments assessing auditory hallucinations in population with psychosis, allows us to underline the scarceness and need of Spanish versions of important instruments. The aim of the study is to examine the psychometric characteristics of two different and complementary instruments for assessing auditory hallucinations, the Spanish version of the Auditory Vocal Hallucination Scale (AVHRS) and the Spanish version of the Positive and Useful Voices Inquiry (PUVI). Attachment-Based Compassion Therapy for Reducing Anxiety and Depression in Fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia patients often experience anxiety and depressive symptoms; however, validated interventions show only limited efficacy. This pilot study analyzed the effects of a 16-session version of attachment-based compassion therapy (ABCT-16) for improving anxiety and depressive symptomatology, as well as self-compassion and decentering, in 11 fibromyalgia patients. Scales were assessed at four time points: baseline, after sessions 8 and 16, and 3.5 months after the completion of the program. Significant improvements were found in all outcomes after the program, and most remained significant

Symptom network analysis of anxiety and depression in epilepsy.

PURPOSE: Anxiety symptoms and depressive symptoms are frequent in PWE and associated with poorer outcomes. Investigation of specific characteristics of anxiety and depressive symptoms in PWE is of interest. METHODS: We used psychometric analyses in symptom networks using screening tools validated in PWE: Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7 (GAD-7) and Neurological Disorders Depression Inventory for Epilepsy (NDDI-E). We conducted an estimation to build the NDDIE and GAD-7 network, analyzed network inferences (especially centrality measures) and performed network robustness analyses as well as modu

Psychometric properties of the STAI-Y scales and normative data in an Italian elderly population.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of anxiety symptoms in older people is capital as it may be linked to increased physical/functional disabilities, onset and progression of neurodegenerative disorders, and poor cognitive functioning. Nonetheless, there is a paucity of psychometrically validated anxiety measures in the elderly. AIMS: This study aimed at assessing the psychometric properties of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-Form Y (STAI-Y) and providing the first normative data for the Italian elderly population. METHODS: The sample included 361 individuals aged 65-94. All subjects underwent the

Evaluation of major depression symptom networks using clinician-rated and patient-rated data.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is heterogeneous, but official diagnostic classifications and widely used rating scales are based on the premise that MDD is a single disorder and that symptoms are equally important to assess severity. Also, patients and clinicians frequently diverge in how they evaluate MDD severity. In order to better understand the differences between MDD scales used by clinicians and patients in the context of MDD heterogeneity, we performed a network analysis from an approach that focuses on the interaction of symptoms rather than total score. METHODS: The Ham

[Asthenia in the psychopathological space of schizophrenia and schizophrenia spectrum disorders (The concept of asthenic deficit in aspect of the modern model of negative symptoms)].

At the modern level of knowledge, classification of asthenic deficit as an independent psychopathological category and, in general terms, as the classification of asthenic symptomatic complexes of negative symptoms within schizophrenia and schizophrenia spectrum disorders is the subject of discussion. Studies of recent decades have shown that asthenia cannot be considered as a separate deficient monosyndrome, does not fit into the framework of negative disorders and is excluded from the block of scales of negative symptoms (SANS, PANSS, BNSS, CAINS). The authors suggest a working hypothesis th

A Reliability Generalization Meta-Analysis of the Padua Inventory of Obsessions and Compulsions.

The Padua Inventory (PI) of obsessions and compulsions is one of the most usually applied tests to assess obsessive-compulsive symptomatology in research contexts as well as for clinical and screening purposes. A reliability generalization meta-analysis was accomplished to estimate the average reliability of the PI scores and to search for characteristics of the samples and studies that can explain the variability among reliability estimates. An exhaustive literature search enabled us to select 39 studies (53 independent samples) that reported alpha and/or test-retest coefficients with the dat

A case report using the mental state examination scale (MSES): a tool for measuring change in mental state.

OBJECTIVE: There is a need for a simple and brief tool that can be used in routine clinical practice for the quantitative measurement of mental state across all diagnostic groups. The main utilities of such a tool would be to provide a global metric for the mental state examination, and to monitor the progression over time using this metric. METHOD: We developed the mental state examination scale (MSES), and used it in an acute inpatient setting in routine clinical work to test its initial feasibility. RESULTS: Using a clinical case, the utility of MSES is demonstrated in this paper. When ma
