[Personality structure of patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn disease, a psychological test study in disease remission].

30 patients with ulcerative colitis and 30 patients with Crohn's disease during remission were tested with the Freiburger Persönlichkeitsinventar (FPI) and standardized interview. There was no difference between both groups in the FPI, both were significantly less aggressive than controls. The patients with ulcerative colitis were more reserved and introverted, patients with Crohn's disease more self-confident, obliging and emotionally stable. Apart from two exceptions the answers in the standardized interview were similar in both groups. The patients with ulcerative colitis had a significantl

[Indicators of organic brain damage in psychological tests and the results of computerized tomography (CT) of the brain of patients with bipolar disorder].

Computerized tomography of the head and psychological evaluation by use the WAIS, Benton Gestalt Test, and L. Bender battery was performed in 32 bipolar patients. CT revealed structural changes in 90% of subjects while only 47% of patients showed organic features in psychological evaluation. No significant correlations were found between the character and severity of changes in psychological tests, and the abnormalities found in CT. Practical implications of applied investigations were discussed.

Psychological aspects of pre-symptomatic testing for Machado-Joseph disease and familial amyloid polyneuropathy type I.

Machado-Joseph disease [MJD, also spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3)] and familial amyloid polyneuropathy type I (FAP-I or ATTR V30M) are neurodegenerative disorders, inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion, which have a high prevalence in Portugal, probably due to a founder effect. MJD and FAP-I are late-onset diseases, with symptoms emerging usually during adulthood. CGPP, which is the national reference centre for these disorders, has a genetic lab that offers diagnostic, pre-symptomatic and prenatal testing and an outpatient clinic to counsel and follow relatives at risk for hereditar

Quantitative sensory testing, neurophysiological and psychological examination in patients with complex regional pain syndrome and hemisensory deficits.

Based on bed-side neurological testing, it has recently been shown that 33% of chronic complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) type I patients exhibit sensory impairments, which extend past the painful area of the affected limb in a hemisensory distribution (Pain, 80 (1999) 95). In the present study, the clinically observed changes in touch and temperature sensations on the side of the body ipsilateral to the affected limb were investigated quantitatively. Neurophysiological and psychological examinations were conducted to detect changes in the peripheral and central nervous system as well as ps

Psychological correlates of opioid use in patients with chronic nonmalignant pain: a preliminary test of the downhill spiral hypothesis.

There is still controversy surrounding the use of opioid medication for patients with chronic nonmalignant pain. Schofferman has argued that long-term opioid use leads to a "downhill spiral" associated with loss of functional capacity and a corresponding increase in depressed mood. The present study was a retrospective comparison of opioid users vs. non-users to determine whether: (a) users have higher levels of disability, medical visitation, depression, and pain; (b) the behavioral problems associated with opioid use persist after controlling for the influence of other medication; (c) opioid

Normal catecholamine and hemodynamic responses to orthostatic tilt in subjects with mitral valve prolapse. Correlation with psychologic testing.

Various functional abnormalities of the autonomic nervous system have been reported in symptomatic patients with mitral valve prolapse. It has also been suggested that mitral valve prolapse may be a component of a neurovascular endocrine abnormality and a marker for anxiety. Eleven consecutive patients with mitral valve prolapse (six men and five women), five of whom were asymptomatic, were studied. In comparison with 11 control subjects matched for age and sex who underwent 60-degree upright tilt, there was no significant difference between plasma norepinephrine levels, heart rate, and blood

Weight discrimination, BMI, or weight bias internalization? Testing the best predictor of psychological distress and body dissatisfaction.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed: (1) to compare psychological distress (PD) and body dissatisfaction (BD) in terms of BMI, weight bias internalization (WBI), and weight discrimination (current and past); (2) to assess the best predictor of PD and BD and assess the relationships with weight discrimination, BD, and WBI. METHODS: The sample consisted of 1283 participants across all BMI categories, recruited through the internet voluntarily. People with obesity were the most predominant (26.1%). Experiences of weight-based discrimination were reported by participants across all BMI categories, and th

How social media usage affects psychological and subjective well-being: testing a moderated mediation model.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of literature demonstrates that social media usage has witnessed a rapid increase in higher education and is almost ubiquitous among young people. The underlying mechanisms as to how social media usage by university students affects their well-being are unclear. Moreover, current research has produced conflicting evidence concerning the potential effects of social media on individuals' overall well-being with some reporting negative outcomes while others revealing beneficial results. METHODS: To address the research gap, the present research made an attempt to inves

Personality to Prescription Drug Misuse in Adolescents: Testing Affect Regulation, Psychological Dysregulation, and Deviance Proneness Pathways.

Background: Fifteen to 25-year-olds are the age group most likely to misuse prescription drugs. Few studies have tested theory-driven models of adolescent risk for prescription drug misuse. Moreover, rarely are distinct pathways to different forms of prescription drug misuse considered. Methods: We tested mediational paths from personality to mental health symptoms to prescription drug misuse, informed by etiological models of addiction. We specified pathways from particular personality traits to unique forms of prescription drug misuse via specific mental health symptoms. We used semi-longitu

A Systematic Review of the Psychological Implications of Genetic Testing: A Comparative Analysis Among Cardiovascular, Neurodegenerative and Cancer Diseases.

Background: Genetic testing is performed for different purposes, such as identifying carriers, predicting a disease onset in presymptomatic individuals or confirming a diagnosis. However, these tests may have notable psychological effects, such as generating anxiety and depression. These effects may depend on people's perception of risk, severity, and controllability of the disease; and the availability of treatments. To date, there are no reports that analyze these factors specifically, and their role in influencing genetic test users' experience. Methods: We performed a systematic review of

Testing the relative associations of different components of dietary restraint on psychological functioning in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

Although empirical evidence identifies dietary restraint as a transdiagnostic eating disorder maintaining mechanism, the distinctiveness and significance of the different behavioural and cognitive components of dietary restraint are poorly understood. The present study examined the relative associations of the purportedly distinct dietary restraint components (intention to restrict, delayed eating, food avoidance, and diet rules) with measures of psychological distress (depression, anxiety, and stress), disability, and core eating disorder symptoms (overvaluation and binge eating) in patients

Psychological impact of multigene cancer panel testing in patients with a clinical suspicion of hereditary cancer across Spain.

OBJECTIVE: Patients' psychological reactions to multigene cancer panel testing might differ compared with the single-gene testing reactions because of the complexity and uncertainty associated with the different possible results. Understanding patients' preferences and psychological impact of multigene panel testing is important to adapt the genetic counselling model. METHODS: One hundred eighty-seven unrelated patients with clinical suspicion of hereditary cancer undergoing a 25-gene panel test completed questionnaires after pretest genetic counselling and at 1 week, 3 months, and 12 months

Testing a mediation framework for the link between perceived discrimination and psychological distress among sexual minority individuals.

Perceived discrimination is a risk factor for mental health problems among sexual minority individuals. An increasing number of research studies have investigated the mechanisms through which stigma-related stressors such as perceived discrimination are linked with adverse mental health outcomes for sexual minority populations. The integrative mediation framework proposed by Hatzenbuehler (2009) underscores the importance of identifying mediators in the association between stigma-related stressors and mental health outcomes. This study tested 3 mediators--expectations of rejection, anger rumin

Testing Associations Between Childhood Abuse and Health in Young Adults in the Deep South: The Mediating Role of Psychological Symptoms.

Objective: Childhood abuse and neglect can have lasting impacts on mental and physical health. These effects may be amplified in rural and/or under-resourced communities, resulting in heightened anxiety, depression, and physical health problems. This study tested associations between childhood abuse/neglect with self-reported physical symptoms, with depressive and anxiety symptoms serving as potential mediators in this association. Participants: Participants (N = 606) were undergraduate college students living in the southeastern United States. Methods: Participants completed measures assessin
