The relationship between cognitive penetration and predictive coding.

If beliefs and desires affect perception-at least in certain specified ways-then cognitive penetration occurs. Whether it occurs is a matter of controversy. Recently, some proponents of the predictive coding account of perception have claimed that the account entails that cognitive penetrations occurs. I argue that the relationship between the predictive coding account and cognitive penetration is dependent on both the specific form of the predictive coding account and the specific form of cognitive penetration. In so doing, I spell out different forms of each and the relationship that holds b

A relationship pattern measure: the core conflictual relationship theme.

Relationship pattern measures are recently developed systems for measuring the main relationship patterns expressed in psychotherapy sessions or in other interviews. They are precise measures of the kind of pattern that dynamic psychotherapists have estimated clinically ever since the start of such therapies. Leading off the comparisons of such measures that are presented in this issue, this paper will (a) describe a relationship pattern measure, (b) illustrate it, and then (c) compare it with one or more other relationship pattern measures. Beyond these purposes our aim is to indicate the val

[Current Trends in Cognitive Theories in Psychotherapy].

The cognitive revolution is seen as a significant milestone in the conceptual development of psychology and psychotherapy. The cognitive revolution refers to the idea that human thinking is not merely a by-product of behavior, but rather an independent process that influences behavior. Current models understand human cognition as a complex coordination process based on evolutionarily developed information processing systems and built on various abilities such as memory, affective-motivational evaluations, self-regulation, social cognition, and flexible attention regulation. Cognition is thus a

The Wild West: Why attachment theory was never universal.

We advocate for decolonizing developmental theory beyond sample expansion. Using attachment theory as an example, we demonstrate how current theories misrepresent even Western populations, where allo-parental care is a necessity. We argue that focusing on adaptive challenges, not behavior, will support open-ended theories with universal relevance. This requires reflexivity, transparency, and centering indigenous methods prior to proposing any universal developmental mechanisms.

Shock, resonance, and creation.

Based on Ferenczi's ideas, this article explores aspects of the dynamics of "trauma" and its effects on psychic functioning. The discussion focuses on two concepts: shock (or commotion) as an initial disruptive event and the process of psychic repercussion, which may culminate in a movement of creation. Through conceptual figures, I argue that the transformation of traumatic experiences into creative productions is essential and frequent, especially when these experiences are shared and acknowledged by the environment.

How hypnotic suggestions work - A systematic review of prominent theories of hypnosis.

In recent decades, hypnosis has increasingly moved into the mainstream of scientific inquiry. Hypnotic suggestions are frequently implemented in behavioral, neurocognitive, and clinical investigations and interventions. Despite abundant reports about the effectiveness of suggestions in altering behavior, perception, cognition, and agency, no consensus exists regarding the mechanisms driving these changes. This article reviews competing theoretical accounts that address the genesis of subjective, behavioral, and neurophysiological responses to hypnotic suggestions. We systematically analyze the

[Social order, legitimacy, and physical violence as a social fact].

The article discusses theoretical as well as methodological issues of a general sociology of violence which aims at focusing on the dynamic relationship between social order, legitimacy, and physical violence. The article argues in favor of a relational approach consisting of a realistic appraisal (in an epistemological sense) of the actors' place in a locally ordered setting of relationships among objectified forms of social order, collective identities, and social interaction. The author's long term research objective is to develop a general sociology of violence grounded in social action th

The double-deficit hypothesis: a comprehensive analysis of the evidence.

The double-deficit hypothesis of developmental dyslexia proposes that deficits in phonological processing and naming speed represent independent sources of dysfunction in dyslexia. The present article is a review of the evidence for the double-deficit hypothesis, including a discussion of recent findings related to the hypothesis. Studies in this area have been characterized by variability in methodology--how dyslexia is defined and identified, and how dyslexia subtypes are classified. Such variability sets limitations on the extent to which conclusions may be drawn with respect to the double-

Lacan's reinterpretation of Freud's theory on trauma.

Lacan's reinterpretation of Freud's theory on trauma Abstract In this article we consider the Lacanian theory of trauma, with the aim of demonstrating which of Freud's theories Lacan sought to build on and develop in his own model. This approach highlights the continuity, as well as the divergences, between Lacanian psychoanalysis and the Freudian model of trauma. Approaching Lacanian psychoanalysis through the concept of trauma reveals how his theories did not focus only on the subject as determined by the register of language. Rather, Lacanian psychoanalysis emphasises the intimate relations

Balint reassessed: the doctor, his patient, and the illness: a reappraisal.

Psychoanalytical theories seek to explain human behaviour. I believe that they are not scientific, whereas it appears that Balint thought they were. I suggest instead that they are better regarded as myths and part of an artistic discipline. Whereas most of the problems brought by patients to general practitioners can be understood in scientific terms, others can be understood only in artistic terms. These two terms reflect fundamentally different kinds of problems, and different language must be used to discuss them. Neither the two sets of terms nor the two kinds of problem can be confused wi

Experts' subjective theories: how did they explain post-pandemic school violence in their public discourse through digital media?

INTRODUCTION: In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, public communications have reported a rise in school violence. This study seeks to understand the collective subjective theories in the public discourse of experts on school violence after educational confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, it aims at understanding the causes, effects, intervention strategies and contextual conditions associated with the challenges of school violence. METHODS: Drawing on a documentary research design and qualitative methodology, we reconstructed subjective theories based on 109 public di

Using Inhibitory Learning Theories to Optimise Treatment for Children with Anxiety Disorders.

Anxiety disorders in children lead to substantial impairment in functioning and development. Even the most effective gold standard treatments for childhood anxiety have 50% remission rates, suggesting a critical need to improve current treatments. Optimising exposure, the key component of anxiety treatments, represents a promising way to do so. This chapter explains how to optimise exposure outcomes for childhood anxiety through inhibitory learning theory. This chapter describes the background of inhibitory learning, including its different components and the empirical evidence supporting it.

Dual Autonomy and Latent Deprivation: Extending Self-Determination Theory and the Job Demands-Resources Model.

Self-Determination Theory treats autonomy as a unitary construct, the Job Demands-Resources model does not engage with autonomy directly, and the curiosity literature describes exploratory motivation without specifying its structural relationship to either demands or autonomy. This paper proposes that these three traditions can be productively linked through a dual-autonomy framework. Drawing on the JDR model's analysis of demand structures, curiosity psychology's taxonomies of exploratory motivation, and SDT's account of basic psychological needs, the paper argues that autonomy operates in tw

Retrospective Imagination in the Psychotherapeutic Process: A Theoretical-clinical Synthesis.

Imagination plays a central role in psychotherapeutic practice, yet it is often threatened as a technique or as a secondary cognitive activity. In this paper, I develop a process-oriented understanding of guided imaginative retrospection, conceptualising imagination as a culturally-mediated and developmental process. Drawing on clinical material and cultural-psychological theory, it is shown how present affective experiences are aligned with earlier biographical situations through therapist-guided imaginative engagement. The analysis reconstructs four interrelated process dimensions: (1) initi

An Integrated Model of Social Psychology Constructs and Psychoanalytical Themes for Understanding the Extremist Mindset.

In their understanding of extremism, social psychologists discuss the processes of social identity formation, self-categorization and categorization of the other. In this paper, we posit that these processes are related to basic, primitive unconscious mechanisms which have been overlooked in the literature on extremism. A bi-disciplinary model for the understanding of the extremist mindset is crafted, integrating the similarities between social psychology constructs and psychoanalytical themes. The proposed model rests on the assumption that there is no competition between the two paradigms.

Behavioral excesses in depression: a learning theory hypothesis.

This paper reviews two learning theory-based models of experiential contributions to depression: response contingent positive reinforcement and learned helplessness. The authors argue that these models connect to a phenomenon that may explain why symptoms of behavioral excess (e.g. rumination) often occur in depression that is otherwise marked by symptoms of behavioral deficit (e.g. anhedonia). Specifically, the authors illustrate that that concept of schedule strain (or low rates of response contingent reinforcement giving rise to low frequencies of behavior) unites these models. Depression i

Moments of complexity and enigmatic action: a Jungian view of the therapeutic field.

In presenting clinical case material for a panel on archetypes and/or primal phantasies an initial discussion of archetypes as emergent phenomena organizing 'moments of complexity' is given(1) . The relationship of such moments to 'moments of meeting' as developed by the Boston Change Process Study Group is commented on and explored within the context of the case. A condensed report of a multi-year analytic treatment of a bipolar patient having a severe trauma history is offered for discussion. Several unusual, enigmatic events are detailed to illustrate the occurrence of moments of complexity

On Common Ground: Jost's (1897) law of forgetting and Ribot's (1881) law of retrograde amnesia.

T. Ribot's (1881) law of retrograde amnesia states that brain damage impairs recently formed memories to a greater extent than older memories, which is generally taken to imply that memories need time to consolidate. A. Jost's (1897) law of forgetting states that if 2 memories are of the same strength but different ages, the older will decay more slowly than the younger. The main theoretical implication of this venerable law has never been worked out, but it may be the same as that implied by Ribot's law. A consolidation interpretation of Jost's law implies an interference theory of forgetting
