Environmental absorbed-dose quantities for natural radionuclides in soil using a simplified block phantom with an ICRP 110 comparison.

Natural radionuclides in soil produce an outdoor photon field, but an organ absorbed dose also depends on source depth, body geometry, scored mass, emission data and charged-particle transport settings. This work calculates absorbed-dose quantities in defined scoring regions for 40K, the 238U decay series and the 232Th decay series with Geant4 and a simplified block phantom. The Geant4 source uses the full nuclear gamma-emission library recovered from the adopted RadioactiveDecay6.1.2 and PhotonEvaporation6.1.2 data. The production calculation consisted of 20 independent replicas and 4.0×109 s

Exposure to ionizing radiation of workers in Poland.

Results of individual monitoring of occupied workers based on the doses estimations carried out by Central Laboratory for Radiological Protection (CLOR) in Warsaw has been presented. In 2011, about 5000 persons from 330 institutions were monitored. Monitoring service in CLOR is based on two doses assessment methods, Kodak films and MCP-N thermo luminescent detectors. Presented results show that 97% of registered doses were less than 1 mSv and only about 0.1% of assigned doses were higher than 20 mSv. The monitored workers were divided in four groups: medical, scientific, industrial and others.

The importance of time-resolved personal Dosimetry in space: The ISS Crew Active Dosimeter.

Monitoring space radiation is of vital importance for risk reduction strategies in human space exploration. Radiation protection programs on Earth and in space rely on personal and area radiation monitoring instruments. Crew worn radiation detectors are crucial for successful crew radiation protection programs since they measure what each crewmember experiences in different shielding configurations within the space habitable volume. The Space Radiation Analysis Group at NASA Johnson Space Center investigated several compact, low power, real-time instruments for personal dosimetry. Following th

Dose assessment in environmental radiological protection: State of the art and perspectives.

Exposure to radiation is a potential hazard to humans and the environment. The Fukushima accident reminded the world of the importance of a reliable risk management system that incorporates the dose received from radiation exposures. The dose to humans from exposure to radiation can be quantified using a well-defined system; its environmental equivalent, however, is still in a developmental state. Additionally, the results of several papers published over the last decade have been criticized because of poor dosimetry. Therefore, a workshop on environmental dosimetry was organized by the STAR (

Dose calculations in aircrafts after Fukushima nuclear power plant accident - Preliminary study for aviation operations.

There is little information to decision support in air traffic management in case of nuclear releases into the atmosphere. In this paper, the dose estimation due to both, external exposure (i.e. cloud immersion, deposition inside and outside the aircraft), and due to internal exposure (i.e, inhalation of radionuclides inside the aircraft) to passengers and crew is calculated for a worst-case emergency scenario. The doses are calculated for different radionuclides and activities. Calculations are mainly considered according to International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) recommend

Electromagnetic field exposure assessment in Europe radiofrequency fields (10 MHz-6 GHz).

Average levels of exposure to radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic fields (EMFs) of the general public in Europe are difficult to summarize, as exposure levels have been reported differently in those studies in which they have been measured, and a large proportion of reported measurements were very low, sometimes falling below detection limits of the equipment used. The goal of this paper is to present an overview of the scientific literature on RF EMF exposure in Europe and to characterize exposure within the European population. A comparative analysis of the results of spot or long-term RF EM

Radiation on Earth or in Space: What Does It Change?

After having been an instrument of the Cold War, space exploration has become a major technological, scientific and societal challenge for a number of countries. With new projects to return to the Moon and go to Mars, radiobiologists have been called upon to better assess the risks linked to exposure to radiation emitted from space (IRS), one of the major hazards for astronauts. To this aim, a major task is to identify the specificities of the different sources of IRS that concern astronauts. By considering the probabilities of the impact of IRS against spacecraft shielding, three conclusions

EURADOS INTERCOMPARISONS IN EXTERNAL RADIATION DOSIMETRY: SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES AMONG EXERCISES FOR WHOLE-BODY PHOTON, WHOLE-BODY NEUTRON, EXTREMITY, EYE-LENS AND PASSIVE AREA DOSEMETERS.

The European Radiation Dosimetry Group (EURADOS) has been organising dosimetry intercomparisons for many years in response to an identified requirement from individual monitoring services (IMS) for independent performance tests for dosimetry systems. The participation in intercomparisons gives IMS the opportunity to show compliance with their own quality management system, compare results with other participants and develop plans for improving their dosimetry systems. In response to growing demand, EURADOS has increased the number of intercomparisons for external radiation dosimetry. Most of t

A different perception of the linear, nonthreshold hypothesis for low-dose irradiation.

Two equally useful dosimetric quantities, both of which are called dose, are used in toxicology. With radiation measurement, only one--the energy per unit mass D--is called dose. The other--the total energy in the irradiated system--is here distinguished from D by assigning it the name collective energy, epsilon. The collective energy is a more complete statement of dose because it is the product of the energy concentration D and the mass irradiated m. Especially in radioepidemiology, in which epsilon is the total energy imparted to all persons irradiated, the quantity m must be specified beca

Particle showers detected on ISS in Timepix pixel detectors.

We detect regular particle showers in several compact pixel detectors, distributed over the International Space Station. These showers are caused by high energy galactic cosmic rays, with energies often in the 10 s of TeV or higher. We survey the frequency of these events, their dependence on location on ISS, and their independence of the location of ISS, on its orbit. The Timepix detectors used allow individual particle tracks to be resolved, providing a possibility to perform physical analysis of shower events, which we demonstrate. In terms of radiation dosimetry, these showers indicate cer

Estimation of the radiological background and dose assessment in areas with naturally occurring uranium geochemical anomalies--a case study in the Iberian Massif (Central Portugal).

Naturally occurring uranium geochemical anomalies, representative of the several thousand recognized in the Portuguese section of the Iberian Massif and outcropping in three target areas with a total of a few thousand square metres, were subjected to a detailed study (1:1000 scale) to evaluate the radiological health-risk on the basis of a dose assessment. To reach this goal some radioactive isotopes from the uranium, thorium and potassium radioactive series were measured in 52 samples taken from different environmental compartments: soils, stream sediments, water, foodstuff (vegetables) and a
