Perceptual specificity in visual object priming: functional magnetic resonance imaging evidence for a laterality difference in fusiform cortex.

Seeing an object on one occasion may facilitate or prime processing of the same object if it is later again encountered. Such priming may also be found -- but at a reduced level -- for different but perceptually similar objects that are alternative exemplars or 'tokens' of the initially presented object. We explored the neural correlates of this perceptual specificity using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) procedures, contrasting neural activity when participants made object classification decisions (size judgments) regarding previously presented objects (repeated sam

Inhibition of Lateral Prefrontal Cortex Produces Emotionally Biased First Impressions: A Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and Electroencephalography Study.

Optimal functioning in everyday life requires the ability to override reflexive emotional responses and prevent affective spillover to situations or people unrelated to the source of emotion. In the current study, we investigated whether the lateral prefrontal cortex (lPFC) causally regulates the influence of emotional information on subsequent judgments. We disrupted left lPFC function using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and recorded electroencephalography (EEG) before and after. Subjects evaluated the likeability of novel neutral faces after a brief exposure to a happy or fearful f

The presence of intragenically located REP-like elements in Bacillus sporothermodurans is sufficient for REP-PCR typing.

The technique of repetitive extragenic palindromic polymerase chain reaction (REP-PCR) enables the identification and discrimination of clonally related Bacillus sporothermodurans isolates from ultra-high temperature and sterilized milk. The aim of this study was to investigate the genetic basis for the generation of these highly informative REP-PCR patterns. The major 947-bp REP-PCR fragment of B. sporothermodurans was cloned, together with its 5' and 3' flanking sequences. Only partial homology with the REP consensus sequence was established at the borders of the REP-PCR fragment. Moreover,

Spleen tyrosine kinase mediates innate and adaptive immune crosstalk in SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccination.

Durable cell-mediated immune responses require efficient innate immune signaling and the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines. How precisely mRNA vaccines trigger innate immune cells for shaping antigen specific adaptive immunity remains unknown. Here, we show that SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccination primes human monocyte-derived macrophages for activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome. Spike protein exposed macrophages undergo NLRP3-driven pyroptotic cell death and subsequently secrete mature interleukin-1β. These effects depend on activation of spleen tyrosine kinase (SYK) coupled to C-type lectin rece

Emotional learning promotes perceptual predictions by remodeling stimulus representation in visual cortex.

Emotions exert powerful effects on perception and memory, notably by modulating activity in sensory cortices so as to capture attention. Here, we examine whether emotional significance acquired by a visual stimulus can also change its cortical representation by linking neuronal populations coding for different memorized versions of the same stimulus, a mechanism that would facilitate recognition across different appearances. Using fMRI, we show that after pairing a given face with threat through conditioning, viewing this face activates the representation of another viewpoint of the same perso

Automatic avoidance of faces primed by threatening expressions in social anxiety: Sustained but not early attentional effects in an eye-tracking paradigm.

Social anxiety involves persistent fears of social situations and a heightened sensitivity to signs of disapproval. Eye-tracking studies involving socially anxious individuals without clinical diagnoses have yielded heterogeneous results regarding alterations of attentional processes. Cognitive models of anxiety propose that early, automatic processes play a crucial role in attentional orientation. To date, no eye-tracking research has explored the relationship between social anxiety and the automatic processing of facial stimuli preceded by masked emotional expressions using eye-tracking tech

Does warming up improve surgical outcome in total hip arthroplasty?

PURPOSE: Warming up prior to surgery has been shown to enhance surgeons' performance during laparoscopic procedures. It is unknown whether or not warming up prior to total hip arthroplasty (THA) will have a similar effect on surgical outcome. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the effect of warming up on the intraoperative outcome of 82 patients who underwent a primary THA with identical implants. The patients were divided equally into two groups. Group 1 (first case of the day) served as "warm-up procedure," while Group 2 (second case of the day) was the "post-warm-up procedure." RESULTS

High-frequency priming stimulation does not enhance the effect of low-frequency rTMS in the treatment of tinnitus.

Based on its ability to reduce the excitability of the cortex locally, low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been investigated for the treatment of hyperexcitability disorders such as auditory hallucinations and tinnitus. Results are promising, but characterized by only moderate improvement and a high inter-individual variability. Experimental data from motor cortex stimulation in healthy subjects indicates that the depressant effect of low-frequency rTMS can be enhanced by high-frequency priming stimulation. Here we will investigate whether high-frequency primi

Emotion-induced loss aversion and striatal-amygdala coupling in low-anxious individuals.

Adapting behavior to changes in the environment is a crucial ability for survival but such adaptation varies widely across individuals. Here, we asked how humans alter their economic decision-making in response to emotional cues, and whether this is related to trait anxiety. Developing an emotional decision-making task for functional magnetic resonance imaging, in which gambling decisions were preceded by emotional and non-emotional primes, we assessed emotional influences on loss aversion, the tendency to overweigh potential monetary losses relative to gains. Our behavioral results revealed t

Poor anchoring limits dyslexics' perceptual, memory, and reading skills.

The basic deficits underlying the severe and persistent reading difficulties in dyslexia are still highly debated. One of the major topics of debate is whether these deficits are language specific, or affect both verbal and non-verbal stimuli. Recently, Ahissar and colleagues proposed the "anchoring-deficit hypothesis" (Ahissar, Lubin, Putter-Katz, & Banai, 2006), which suggests that dyslexics have a general difficulty in automatic extraction of stimulus regularities from auditory inputs. This hypothesis explained a broad range of dyslexics' verbal and non-verbal difficulties. However, it was

Effects of intentionality and subliminal information in free-choices to inhibit.

Stopping an action at the very last moment is an important feature of human behavioural flexibility. Intentional inhibition has been defined as the ability to inhibit an action on the basis of an internal decision process. Without this ability, actions would be impulsive and would leave little space to correct misguided decisions. Previous research suggests that making a choice between action alternatives activates a specific "choice network" that includes the rostral cingulate zone (RCZ), the anterior insula (AI), the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and the inferior parietal lobe (IPL)

Mild and repetitive mild traumatic brain injury: Changes in microglial cells and synapses.

Mild traumatic brain injury results from external mechanical forces to the head. Repetitive mild traumatic brain injury, characterized by multiple concussive events over time, is increasingly recognized in contact sports or domestic abuse. Repetitive injuries are associated with a greater risk of cumulative deficits and chronic neurodegenerative conditions. After a period of large focus on gross morphological changes following mild traumatic brain injury and repetitive mild traumatic brain injury, recent research is exploring more subtle yet critical changes at the synaptic and microglial leve

Low-load Resistance Exercise with Perceptually Primed Practical Blood Flow Restriction Induces Similar Motor Performance Fatigue, Physiological Changes, and Perceptual Responses Compared to Traditional Blood Flow Restriction in Males and Females.

In the recent past, practical blood flow restriction (pBFR) using non-pneumatic, usually elastic cuffs has been established as a cost-effective alternative to traditional blood flow restriction (BFR) using pneumatic cuffs, especially for training in large groups. This study investigated whether low-load resistance exercise with perceptually primed pBFR using an elastic knee wrap is suitable to induce similar motor performance fatigue as well as physiological and perceptual responses compared to traditional BFR using a pneumatic nylon cuff in males and females. Automatic semantic influence on early visual word recognition in the ventral occipito-temporal cortex.

The left ventral occipitotemporal cortex (vOT) is a critical region in reading. According to the interactive account of reading, the vOT is an interface between the lower-level visual regions and higher-level language areas. One prediction of the interactive account is that orthographic activation in vOT should be automatically influenced by semantics and phonology. In the current study, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a masked priming paradigm with a relatively short duration (150 ms) to examine whether language information automatically influences vOT during Chinese

Chemogenetic inhibition reveals midline thalamic nuclei and thalamo-accumbens projections mediate cocaine-seeking in rats.

Drug addiction is a chronic disease that is shaped by alterations in neuronal function within the cortical-basal ganglia-thalamic circuit. However, our understanding of how this circuit regulates drug-seeking remains incomplete, and relapse rates remain high. The midline thalamic nuclei are an integral component of the cortical-basal ganglia-thalamic circuit and are poised to mediate addiction behaviors, including relapse. It is surprising that little research has examined the contribution of midline thalamic nuclei and their efferent projections in relapse. To address this, we expressed inhib

MRI-targeted repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation of Heschl's gyrus for refractory auditory hallucinations.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has shown promise as a treatment for refractory auditory hallucinations (AH) in Schizophrenia. Most previous studies have examined the effect of low frequency, left-sided stimulation (LFL) (1 Hz) to the temporoparietal cortex (TPC). Priming stimulation (6 Hz) prior to LFL stimulation (hereby simply referred to as priming) has been shown to enhance the neurophysiological effects of LFL rTMS alone and, as such, may lead to greater attenuation of AH. OBJECTIVE: Therefore, this study evaluated the efficacy of priming rTMS and LFL rTM

EXTENT AND LIMITS OF COVERT LEXICAL ACTIVATION IN LETTER-BY-LETTER READING.

The occurrence of implicit reading in brain-damaged patients with letter-by-letter dyslexia suggests a process of covert lexical activation, whereby lexical access occurs on the basis of parallel letter encoding. The extent and limitations of this process w ere studied by examining masked orthographic and phonological w ord priming as well as orthographic neighbourhood size effects in letter-by-letter reader IH. In Exp. 1, masked repetition priming occurred with primes displayed in a case-alternate format that were show n for 100 m sec (a duration that does not reliably support overt word iden

Different time scales of motion integration for anticipatory smooth pursuit and perceptual adaptation.

When repeatedly exposed to moving stimuli, the oculomotor system elicits anticipatory smooth pursuit (ASP) eye movements, even before the stimulus moves. ASP is affected oppositely to perceptual speed judgments of repetitive moving stimuli: After a sequence of fast stimuli, ASP velocity increases, whereas perceived speed decreases. These two effects--perceptual adaptation and oculomotor priming--could result from adapting a single common internal speed representation that is used for perceptual comparisons and for generating ASP. Here we test this hypothesis by assessing the temporal dependenc

Prior exposure of Arabidopsis seedlings to mechanical stress heightens jasmonic acid-mediated defense against necrotrophic pathogens.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged mechanical stress (MS) causes thigmomorphogenesis, a stress acclimation response associated with increased disease resistance. What remains unclear is if; 1) plants pre-exposed to a short period of repetitive MS can prime defence responses upon subsequent challenge with necrotrophic pathogens, 2) MS mediates plant immunity via jasmonic acid (JA) signalling, and 3) a short period of repetitive MS can cause long-term changes in gene expression resembling a stress-induced memory. To address these points, 10-days old juvenile Arabidopsis seedlings were mechanically stressed f
