Modulatory mechanisms underlying high-frequency transcranial random noise stimulation (hf-tRNS): A combined stochastic resonance and equivalent noise approach.

BACKGROUND: High-frequency transcranial random noise stimulation (hf-tRNS) is a neuromodulatory technique consisting of the application of alternating current at random intensities and frequencies. hf-tRNS induces random neural activity in the system that may boost the sensitivity of neurons to weak inputs. Stochastic resonance is a nonlinear phenomenon whereby the addition of an optimal amount of noise results in performance enhancement, whereas further noise increments impair signal detection or discrimination. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to assess whether modulatory effects of hf-t

The use of a custom mode electron capture detector to determine mixing ratios of environmental tracers: Sulfur hexafluoride, chlorotrifluoromethane and bromotrifluoromethane.

Atmospheric concentrations of anthropogenic trace gases, such as sulfur hexafluoride, SF6, chlorotrifluoromethane, CF3Cl, and bromotrifluoromethane, CF3Br, are increasing. Their long lifetimes and limited chemical reactivity make them attractive environmental tracers for hydrology and oceanography. While ambient SF6 concentrations can be readily measured using GC-ECD, the simultaneous analysis of CF3Cl and CF3Br is hampered due to their low ECD sensitivity. The response of a commercial ECD for those gases was enhanced using the resonance detection mode which is based on shifting the mean energ

The associative pathways linking intangible cultural heritage short videos to youth rural cultural identity: An experiment based on eye-tracking and structural equation modeling.

Against the background of digital media development and rural cultural revitalization, intangible cultural heritage (ICH) faces intergenerational inheritance challenges among young people. Existing relevant studies mainly adopt subjective analysis and lack objective quantitative exploration of its influencing mechanisms. This study combined eye-tracking experiments and questionnaire surveys, collecting 62 matched datasets and 418 valid questionnaires for empirical analysis. The results revealed that ICH short video characteristics positively affected youth's visual attention, which further tri

Stability and control mechanism of nonlinear horizontal vibration for rolling system with gyroscope precession effect.

This paper investigates the nonlinear horizontal vibration of a cold rolling system induced by the gyroscope precession effect-a critical yet underexplored issue affecting strip quality and rolling stability. A nonlinear dynamic model is developed by incorporating the axial excitation force and the elastic deformation of the work roll based on d'Alembert principles. The primary parametric resonance response, corresponding to the first Arnold tongue, is analyzed using the multi-scale method and validated experimentally. To further understand the systematic dynamic behavior, the homotopy analysi

Auditory Frequency Representations in Human Somatosensory Cortex.

Recent studies have challenged the traditional notion of modality-dedicated cortical systems by showing that audition and touch evoke responses in the same sensory brain regions. While much of this work has focused on somatosensory responses in auditory regions, fewer studies have investigated sound responses and representations in somatosensory regions. In this functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study, we measured BOLD signal changes in participants performing an auditory frequency discrimination task and characterized activation patterns related to stimulus frequency using both uni

LITES-Based Sensitive CO2 Detection Using 2 μm Diode Laser and Self-Designed 9.5 kHz Quartz Tuning Fork.

A carbon dioxide (CO2) sensor based on light-induced thermoelastic spectroscopy (LITES) using a 2 μm diode laser and a self-designed low-frequency trapezoidal-head QTF is reported for the first time in this invited paper. The self-designed trapezoidal-head QTF with a low resonant frequency of 9464.18 Hz and a high quality factor (Q) of 12,133.56 can significantly increase the accumulation time and signal level of the CO2-LITES sensor. A continuous-wave (CW) distributed-feedback (DFB) diode laser is used as the light source, and the strongest absorption line of CO2 located at 2004.01 nm is chos

Differential polarization of cortical pyramidal neuron dendrites through weak extracellular fields.

The rise of transcranial current stimulation (tCS) techniques have sparked an increasing interest in the effects of weak extracellular electric fields on neural activity. These fields modulate ongoing neural activity through polarization of the neuronal membrane. While the somatic polarization has been investigated experimentally, the frequency-dependent polarization of the dendritic trees in the presence of alternating (AC) fields has received little attention yet. Using a biophysically detailed model with experimentally constrained active conductances, we analyze the subthreshold response of

Measuring the vibrational response of a high performance gradient coil.

The vibrational response of a gradient coil in a magnetic resonance imaging system to a pulse of current gives rise to additional currents driven by the electromotive force generated by the motion of the gradient coil windings through the field. These vibration induced fields can be detected directly via a dynamic field camera and the frequency spectrum of these fields is characteristic of the gradient coil mechanical structure and its mounting. The following describes the measurement and analysis of these fields via this method. The measurements obtained herein are compared with the manufactu

Leaky Hollow-Core Fiber-Based All-Optical Photoacoustic Gas Sensor for Highly Sensitive Detection of Carbon Dioxide.

Photoacoustic (PA) gas sensing technology is well known for its high sensitivity. However, the sensitivity decays when detecting carbon dioxide because of the long vibrational-translational (V-T) relaxation time. In this work, we systematically exploited and optimized a leaky hollow-core fiber (LHCF)-based all-optical low-frequency resonant photoacoustic gas sensor via theoretical modeling, finite element analysis, and experimental validation. An optimized LHCF-PA gas sensor with an operation frequency of 1020 Hz was constructed to limit the influences from the long V-T relaxation time. The to

Miniature anti-metal UHF RFID tag antenna loaded with embedded open stubs for enhanced bandwidth.

A miniature tag antenna, which has a geometrical dimension of 20 mm × 20 mm × 3.32 mm (0.061λ × 0.061λ × 0.010λ, where λ is the free-space wavelength at 915 MHz) has been proposed for metal-mountable UHF RFID applications. A single-layer folded patch antenna incorporating two open stubs is designed to provide high inductance for frequency tuning, resulting in an enhanced operational bandwidth of 855-942 MHz defined using read range R ≥ 4 m criterion, where the tag maintains a minimum read range of 4 m. The width of the stubs can be adjusted to fine-tune the tag resonant frequency. These two st

Quad-Band Terahertz Metasurface Flexible Biosensor for HCC Biomarker Detection Using a Multipeak Data Fusion Strategy.

Terahertz technology, with its label-free, nondestructive nature and unique fingerprint spectral characteristics for biomolecules, holds great promise for high-sensitivity detection of cancer biomarkers. However, conventional terahertz biosensors typically achieve sensing based on a single resonant peak, which inherently limits the sensitivity and detection precision. In this article, a flexible quad-band terahertz metasurface biosensor is proposed. The biosensor employs a mirrored double-F-shaped metallic unit cell, which generates four resonant peaks at 1.02, 2.27, 2.60, and 2.95 THz. Moreov

Physical modelling of propagation characteristics of blasting stress waves in rock masses with parallel and X-shaped intersecting joints.

During rock blasting in tunnel excavation and mining, the presence of jointed fractures significantly affects the construction safety and stability of surrounding rock masses. To elucidate the effects of joints with different geometric configurations on the propagation behavior and attenuation mechanisms of blasting stress waves in rock masses, this study conducted similar material model tests to construct rock mass models containing parallel joints and X-shaped intersecting joints. Using Fast Fourier Transform and DIC image processing, a systematic comparative analysis was conducted on the ef

Non-Invasive liquid viscosity characterization in Fluid-Filled pipes using zero group velocity guided wave resonances.

Non-invasive monitoring of liquid viscosity within sealed pipelines is important for industrial process control, yet conventional techniques require fluid sampling or sensor insertion. This study uses Zero Group Velocity (ZGV) guided-wave resonances in fluid-filled elastic pipes for viscosity characterization from external pipe-wall measurements. A 6 × 6 characteristic equation for axisymmetric wave propagation in a hollow cylinder containing a viscous Newtonian fluid is derived by incorporating viscous shear waves in the fluid domain. Perturbation analysis identifies two viscosity-dependent s

Comparison and clinical application of frequency domain methods in analysis of neonatal heart rate time series.

The frequency content of the heart rate (HR) series contains information regarding the state of the autonomic nervous system. Of particular importance is respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), the high-frequency fluctuation in HR attributable to respiration. The unevenly sampled nature of heart rate data, however, presents a problem for the discrete Fourier transform. Interpolation of the HR series allows even sampling, but filters high-frequency content. The Lomb periodogram (LP) is a regression-based method that addresses these issues. To evaluate the efficacy of the LP and Fourier techniques i

Sleep deprivation changes frequency-specific functional organization of the resting human brain.

Previous resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) studies have widely explored the temporal connection changes in the human brain following long-term sleep deprivation (SD). However, the frequency-specific topological properties of sleep-deprived functional networks remain virtually unclear. In this study, thirty-seven healthy male subjects underwent resting-state fMRI during rested wakefulness (RW) and after 36 hours of SD, and we examined frequency-specific spectral connection changes (0.01-0.08 Hz, interval = 0.01 Hz) caused by SD. First, we conducted a multivariate pat

Weighted envelope spectrum based on the spectral coherence for bearing diagnosis.

The key idea behind demodulation analysis for bearing diagnosis is to determine the fault-induced frequency band and directly detect the potential bearing fault characteristic frequency (FCF) in the demodulated spectrum. Till now, most demodulation methods are based on the optimal selection of only one informative frequency band. However, the unwanted in-band noise will be retained or some fault information may be ignored in the case of the discrete resonant frequency band or multiple informative frequency bands. To address the issue, a FCF-oriented criterion is proposed to determine all the i

Detailed speech evaluation including formant 3 analysis and voice visualization in maxillofacial rehabilitation: A clinical report.

Objective speech evaluation such as analysis of formants 1 and 2 and nasality measurement have been used in maxillofacial rehabilitation for outcome assessment. However, in some patients, those evaluations are insufficient to assess a specific or unique problem. This report describes the use of a new speech evaluation including formant 3 analysis and voice visualization in a patient with a maxillofacial defect. The patient was a 67-year-old man who had a maxillary defect that opened to the maxillary sinus and who had an unnatural voice even when wearing an obturator. Nasality was low and the f

Noninvasive detection of intracranial vascular lesions using an electronic stethoscope.

Using an electronic stethoscope, the authors have attempted noninvasive detection of intracranial aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVM's), and carotid cavernous fistulas in 45 patients. A microphone of older design and a newly designed horn-coupled probe microphone were used to record the sound signals emanating from the cranium. A trigger pulse recorded by another microphone placed over the carotid area or the precordium was used to time the intracranial signals. The sound signals were converted to electrical signals, amplified, filtered, and analyzed using fast Fourier transformation
