BACKGROUND: Angle closure glaucoma (ACG) whether primary or secondary lens induced has rare occurrence in cases with retinitis pigmentosa (RP).
METHOD: Five patients with history of diminished vision, ocular pain, and nyctalopia were clinically evaluated. Four patients had unilateral presentations of circumciliary congestion, corneal edema, and high intraocular pressure (IOP), while one had bilateral presentation, respectively. Anterior chambers were shallow; fundoscopy revealed the features of RP and gonioscopy affirmed closed angles in all the cases. The management strategies were individua

Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) in the human is a progressive, currently irreversible neural degenerative disease usually caused by gene defects that disrupt the function or architecture of the photoreceptors. While RP can initially be a disease of photoreceptors, there is increasing evidence that the inner retina becomes progressively disorganized as the outer retina degenerates. These alterations have been extensively described in animal models, but remodeling in humans has not been as well characterized. This study, using computational molecular phenotyping (CMP) seeks to advance our understandin

CLINICAL CASE: A 27-year-old woman with a history of nyctalopia and constriction of visual field of the right eye. The ophthalmological examination showed a visual field and electroretinogram that were compatible with unilateral retinitis pigmentosa (RP). After a one year follow-up, the unilateral condition remained.
DISCUSSION: Unilateral retinitis pigmentosa is a rare condition, with a frequency between 0.2%-5% of the RP. It mainly affects women and older age groups than bilateral RP. For a definitive diagnosis, it is necessary to have a funduscopy and electroretinogram (ERG) altered unilat

PURPOSE: To describe multimodal imaging of syphilitic multifocal retinitis.
METHODS: Observational case series.
RESULTS: Two patients developed multifocal retinitis after treatment of unrecognized syphilitic uveitis with systemic corticosteroids in the absence of appropriate antibiotic therapy. Multimodal imaging localized the foci of retinitis within the retina in contrast to superficial retinal precipitates that accumulate on the surface of the retina in eyes with untreated syphilitic uveitis. Although the retinitis resolved after treatment with systemic penicillin in both cases, vision re

Necrotizing viral retinitis is associated with infection by the Herpes family of viruses, especially herpes simplex virus (HSV), varicella zoster virus (VZV) and occasionally cytomegalovirus (CMV). When the diagnosis is suspected clinically, antiviral therapy must be instituted immediately. We report the case of a patient presenting with necrotizing viral retinitis 3 months following intravitreal injection of triamcinolone acetonide for diabetic macular edema. Fluorescein angiography demonstrated a superior temporal occlusive vasculitis. A diagnostic anterior chamber paracentesis was performed

Visual loss in infectious posterior uveitis or panuveitis can occur if proper therapy is delayed because of diagnostic uncertainty. Some disorders, such as acute retinal necrosis and bacterial endophthalmitis, can be rapidly progressive, and therefore require prompt and accurate diagnosis to guide initial therapy. Other more slowly evolving infections, such as toxoplasmic chorioretinitis or fungal endophthalmitis, can be worsened by empiric use of corticosteroids without specific antimicrobial coverage. Key ocular diagnostic features are helpful but highly variable with overlap with both non-i

PURPOSE: To report a case of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis associated with Good's syndrome.
METHODS: A 57-year-old man presented to our ophthalmology clinic with complaints of visual loss in the left eye for 2 weeks. His medical anamnesis revealed myasthenia gravis, thymoma resection, multiple chest infections, and Campylobacter septicemia. Left eye examination revealed mild anterior uveitis, moderate vitritis, and superotemporal active retinitis.
RESULTS: Polymerase chain reaction of both aqueous humor and vitreous tap were positive for CMV DNA, which suggested CMV retinitis. The patient

BACKGROUND: Asteroid hyalosis (AH) is a condition in which cream-colored or white spherical particles are suspended in the vitreous body. Asteroid hyalosis is considered not to cause decreased vision or any other visual symptoms except in rare cases. There have been a few reports of AH in patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP).
METHODS: To assess the prevalence of AH in patients with RP, 320 patients with typical forms of RP were studied. One patient was offered a standard three-port vitrectomy, and the spherical particles obtained from her vitrectomy sample were analyzed using an energy-dis

A 42-year-old man with a history of human immunodeficiency virus and previous immune reconstitution after initiating a highly active antiretroviral therapy regimen was referred to rule out cytomegalo-virus retinitis. He had an unusual juxtapapillary collection of white superficial material and multiple preretinal collections resting on a peripheral ground glass opacification of the retina. These lesions quickly resolved after initiating treatment for syphilitic retinitis. The patient appeared to have developed an exaggerated response to the ocular syphilitic infection that may be related to th

PURPOSE: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis is the most common ocular opportunistic infection associated with AIDS. It usually affects the peripheral retina, sparing the macula. We describe an atypical CMV retinitis exclusively confined to the macula.
METHODS: A 43-year-old man with the diagnosis of AIDS developed a white retinal lesion confined to the macula of the right eye. Two weeks later, a more typical granular appearance was observed leading to presumption of CMV retinitis.
RESULTS: The patient was treated with ganciclovir without success. With foscarnet, a good response was obtained, le

The name retinitis pigmentosa (RP) describes a heterogeneous group of inherited progressive retinal dystrophies, primarily affecting the peripheral retina. Patients experience night blindness and visual field loss, often leading to complete blindness. RP can be inherited in autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, X-linked, mitochondrial and genetically more complex modes. To date, 39 loci have been implicated in non-syndromic RP, for which 30 of the genes are known. Many of these can be grouped by function, giving insights into the disease process. These include components of the phototransdu

Non syndromic forms of Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) constitute a collection of clinically and genetically heterogeneous inherited retinal degenerative diseases. They are characterized by a bilateral progressive visual loss susceptible to cause blindness. These diseases are transmitted through pedigrees according to all known modes of inheritance. They are bilateral and usually start during infancy. However, very early clinical presentations exist, such as those observed in children affected by Leber Congenital Amaurosis, as well as late onset autosomal dominant forms of retinitis pigmentosa. PURPOSE: The relation between early changes in the photopic flicker electroretinogram (ERG) and photopic psychophysical changes in retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is poorly understood. Here, abnormalities in foveal and extrafoveal temporal contrast sensitivity functions (TCSFs) were studied in a group of carefully selected patients with RP who had relatively preserved macular function. The psychophysical results were compared with changes in the timing of the multifocal ERG.
METHODS: Subjects were patients with RP who had acuity > or =20/32 and no visual field defects within 6 degrees from the fove

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP), one of the most common forms of hereditary retinal degeneration, is characterized by night blindness and constricted visual fields. In addition to bone spicule pigmentation, other ocular findings may include posterior subcapsular cataracts, cystoid macular edema, and hyaline bodies or drusen of the optic nerve. Rarely, optic nerve head (ONH) edema has been reported to be associated with RP. A 44-year-old white male with RP and neurosensory hearing loss (Usher's syndrome type II) presented to our clinic for routine examination. A dilated fundus examination revealed bo

Cytomegalovirus infection is common in patients with AIDS, and often causes retinitis. Treatment is rarely curative, but the progression of retinitis is delayed. The untreated course of cytomegalovirus retinitis in AIDS is unknown. We report a 35-year-old man with retinitis who refused treatment. Retinitis resulted in blindness within 6 months. Measurement of cytomegalovirus genomes showed an increasing viral load in blood and urine.
