Investigating the use of plasma pTau181 in retired contact sports athletes.

BACKGROUND: Considering the wide range of outcomes following sport-related concussions, biomarkers are needed to detect underlying pathological changes. The objective was to analyze the use of plasma phosphorylated tau 181 (pTau181) as a non-invasive measure of underlying brain changes in a cohort of retired contact sports athletes at risk of neurodegeneration. METHODS: Fifty-four retired contact sport athletes and 27 healthy controls whose blood plasma was analyzed for pTau181 were included. A portion (N = 21) of retired athletes had a 2-years follow-up visit. All participants had completed

Retired National Football League Players are Not at Greater Risk for Suicide.

OBJECTIVE: Some researchers have claimed that former National Football League (NFL) players are at increased risk for suicide as a clinical feature of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). This review examines the literature on risk for suicide in former professional football players, and the association between suicide and CTE. METHOD: A narrative review of the literature published between 1928 and 2018. RESULTS: Between 1928 and 2009, suicide was not considered to be a clinical feature of CTE in the literature. The best available evidence from epidemiological studies suggests that former

A screening tool for the risk of disability retirement due to musculoskeletal disorders.

Electroconvulsive therapy is an effective and well-tolerated antidepressant treatment for the elderly population. The place of electroconvulsive therapy in the treatment sequence for depression in the elderly is currently not well established. This review aims to identify the factors that contribute to a positive response and remission in elderly patients with depression undergoing electroconvulsive therapy treatment. We searched five bibliographic databases (Medline ALL Ovid, Embase.com, APA PsycInfo Ovid, Cochrane Library Wiley and Web of Science Core Collection) for articles published betwe

Serum cardiac troponin I concentration in retired racing greyhounds.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac troponin I (cTnI) is a polypeptide found specifically in cardiac muscle tissue that has been used as a diagnostic and prognostic indicator of cardiomyopathy. Increases in cTnI are associated with myocardial pathologic processes. However, high serum cTnI concentrations have been observed in normal Greyhounds. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that Greyhounds have cTnI concentrations higher than non-Greyhound dogs, and that a separate reference range should be established for Greyhounds. ANIMALS: Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein from a group of 20 healthy Greyho

Functional impairment and quality of life in retired workers of the construction trades.

This cross-sectional study compared the quality of life and physical health of retirees from the construction industry to that of retirees from more sedentary occupations. The feasibility of cooperation from the unions and their retirees for a larger health study was also examined. The mailed health survey assessed current physical functioning, role limitations as a result of poor health, pain, and past and current problems with falls and injuries. The survey was completed by 77 construction and 174 nonconstruction retirees. Results were striking with 42.1% of the construction retirees, compar

A retired shipyard worker with rapidly progressive pulmonary interstitial fibrosis.

We present a case of progressive interstitial fibrosis in a retired shipyard worker who was exposed to asbestos during the postwar era of the late 1940s and 1950s, when asbestos exposures in the workplace were not regulated. Forty years later, at 63 years of age, the patient presented with restrictive lung disease. The patient was diagnosed with asbestos-related pleural disease and parenchymal asbestosis. He remained stable for the next 7 years, but then he began to manifest rapid clinical progression, which raised the possibility of an unusual variant of asbestosis, a concomitant interstitial

Asbestos related pleural plaques in retired boiler room workers.

Occupational disease is often underestimated and only a few formal reports have been published in Taiwan. This study reports of a group of workers with asbestos-induced-disease, pleural plaque in Taiwan. Pleural plaque is a marker of exposure to asbestos. The disease was found in chest radiographs of five boiler room workers in a sugar refining factory. The chest radiographs of 248 current workers in that plant were reviewed, and none of them was found to have pleural plaques. The storage of asbestos and the long-time use of mixed asbestos cement for insulation of the inner wall of the stove a

Low back pain among retired wrestlers and heavyweight lifters.

The lifetime incidence and prevalence of low back pain among 32 retired wrestlers (ages 39 to 62 years) and 13 retired heavyweight lifters (ages 40 to 61 years) were evaluated and compared to the corresponding results in a cross-sectional study of 716 men (ages 40 to 47 years). The radiologic findings and the findings upon physical examination in the athletes were compared to the findings in another study of normal, active, similarly aged men who were sampled at random. The lifetime incidence and prevalence of low back pain was higher among the wrestlers (59%) compared with both the lifters (2

Diverging trajectories of depressive symptoms after retirement: the moderating role of social engagement.

OBJECTIVES: Retirement marks a major life transition that can influence psychological well-being in later life. Although previous studies have examined the mental health consequences of retirement, less is known about how depressive symptoms evolve before and after retirement and whether these trajectories differ by levels of social engagement. This study investigates longitudinal changes in depressive symptoms surrounding retirement and examines whether social engagement moderates these changes. METHODS: Data were drawn from 10,233 older adults across seven waves of the Korean Longitudinal S

Large emission mitigation potential from sequencing fossil fuel extraction infrastructure retirement in China.

China's fossil fuel infrastructure could lock in substantial emissions across both extraction and downstream use, making a well-defined phaseout strategy urgent for achieving carbon neutrality. We analyze the differences between the current retirement strategy and the proposed emission-oriented retirement sequencing strategy by quantifying the emission mitigation effect, employment benefit, and cost-saving advantage of strategies. We show that China's fossil fuel emissions totaled 9,850 MtCO2e in 2023 and are projected to reach 98.9-148.5 GtCO2e cumulatively during 2024-2050 under existing pla

Poor psychosocial work environment: a ticket to retirement? Variations by gender and education.

Many countries, including Norway, are implementing policies to delay retirement and encourage older workers to remain in the labour market. Improving psychosocial working conditions may motivate older workers to continue working. While research has linked psychosocial working characteristics to retirement intentions and work exit, there is a knowledge gap regarding gender and socioeconomic differences in these influences. This study investigates the impact of psychosocial working characteristics on employment exit among older workers, examining variations by gender and educational attainment.

Changes in Frailty and Incident Cancer: Evidence From the Health and Retirement Study.

BACKGROUND: Although frailty has been identified as a potential risk factor for cancer, most previous studies have only considered frailty status at a single time point. The relationship between dynamic changes in frailty and incident cancer is less well understood. This study aimed to evaluate the associations of both baseline frailty status and changes in frailty status with subsequent cancer risk. METHODS: Data were derived from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), a nationally representative prospective cohort in the United States. Frailty was assessed using a 29-item Rockwood frailty i

Health and transitions into nonemployment and early retirement among older workers in Canada.

Extending working lives is considered a viable solution to fiscal and macroeconomic challenges related to population ageing. Opportunities for sustained employment, however, are not experienced equally among older population, particularly among those with a health problem. This study aims to examine the longer-term effect of health on employment trajectories in later part of working life using a unique survey-administrative linked dataset for Canada. Specifically, we apply competing-risks models to analyze whether different aspects of health conditions at baseline predict subsequent exit route

Maternal age and offspring adult health: evidence from the health and retirement study.

Advanced maternal age is associated with negative offspring health outcomes. This interpretation often relies on physiological processes related to aging, such as decreasing oocyte quality. We use a large, population-based sample of American adults to analyze how selection and lifespan overlap between generations influence the maternal age-offspring adult health association. We find that offspring born to mothers younger than age 25 or older than 35 have worse outcomes with respect to mortality, self-rated health, height, obesity, and the number of diagnosed conditions than those born to mothe

The impact of health on individual retirement plans: self-reported versus diagnostic measures.

We reassess the impact of health on retirement plans of older workers using a unique survey-register match-up which allows comparing the retirement effects of potentially biased survey self-reports of health to those of unbiased register-based diagnostic measures. The aim is to investigate whether even for narrowly defined health measures a divergence exists in the impacts of health on retirement between self-reported health and objective physician-reported health. Our sample consists of older workers and retirees drawn from a Danish panel survey from 1997 and 2002, merged to longitudinal regi
