Identification, Prevention, and Treatment of Perinatal Depression in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Narrative Review.

Perinatal depression is more prevalent in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) than in high-income countries, reflecting greater exposure to physical, psychosocial, and environmental adversities. It can have lasting consequences for the woman, her child, and wider family. Despite its high burden, access to appropriate mental health care for perinatal depression remains extremely limited in most LMICs. In this narrative review, we conducted a search of PubMed and Google Scholar from 2015 to 2024 (with the addition of other key articles based on authorship team consensus) for recent and poli

Innovative Preventive and Resilience Approaches Against Aedes-linked Vector-borne Arboviral Diseases Threat and Epidemics Burden in Gulf Council Countries.

Facing the local and imported borderless Aedes-linked vector-borne viral diseases threat and epidemics burden, the Health Committee of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), including the Saudi Arabian government, announced that all Gulf countries are still free from the threat of a Zika virus epidemic. This article provides a vision of integrated eco-friendly and sustainable behavioral communication change (BCC), biological control preparedness and resilience approaches, and innovations implementation in Saudi Arabia and GCC for the purpose of controlling the threat of Aedes-linked vector-borne

National and State-Specific Shingles Vaccination Among Adults Aged ≥60 Years.

INTRODUCTION: Shingles (herpes zoster) causes substantial morbidity, especially among older adults. The shingles vaccine has been recommended for people aged ≥60 years since 2006. This study assessed recent shingles vaccination at national and state levels among adults aged ≥60 years. METHODS: The 2014 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data were analyzed in 2015 to assess shingles vaccination coverage among adults aged ≥60 years at national and state levels. Multivariable logistic regression and predictive marginal models identified factors independently associated with vaccination.

Laparoscopic management of a pediatric pantaloon hernia with contralateral patent processus vaginalis: a case report.

Pediatric direct inguinal hernia is a rare entity, and the coexistence of ipsilateral indirect and direct inguinal hernias (pantaloon hernia) is even more uncommon. Consequently, pediatric surgeons have limited experience with this entity. We report a 12-year-old boy who presented with a reducible right inguinal mass. Laparoscopy revealed a right-sided pantaloon hernia (predominantly indirect) and a contralateral patent processus vaginalis on the left. We performed transumbilical single-port laparoscopic bilateral high ligation of the hernia sacs (including both the direct and indirect compone

Establishment of a Multidisciplinary Pediatric Lupus Care Clinic at a Tertiary Center.

Childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) is a complex autoimmune disease marked by higher disease severity, multi-organ involvement, and a greater risk of kidney damage compared to adult-onset SLE. Recognizing the challenges associated with treating cSLE, especially in patients with lupus nephritis, Boston Children's Hospital established a multidisciplinary pediatric lupus clinic. This clinic integrates rheumatology, nephrology, nursing, and social work services to provide comprehensive, coordinated care. The team-based model facilitates shared decision-making, personalized treatmen

Corporatization of Academic Medical Centers and Its Impact on the "Esprit-De-Corps" of Surgical Teams.

BACKGROUND: Accelerating corporatization of US healthcare has reshaped academic medical center governance, with for-profit investor-owned organizations comprising 23.7% of market share in 2,023 and 56.1% of hospitals owned by corporations with 3 or more hospitals. Although intended to enhance financial sustainability, centralized, productivity-driven management may conflict with the professional culture underpinning high-performing surgical teams. STUDY DESIGN: Narrative perspective synthesizing literature in health policy, organizational psychology, and surgical culture to examine how corpor

A Bio-Psycho-Social Approach to Understanding Optimism and Pessimism in Response to Stress.

Stress is widely known to have debilitating effects on physical health and mental wellbeing, particularly on one's coping styles, personality traits, and outlook on life. Cumulative and chronic stress, which can serve as a triggering or aggravating factor for many pathological disorders if left unaddressed, has been linked to many life-threatening diseases. While many studies have looked at how optimism and pessimism are used as a form of coping mechanism, few have examined how different bio-psycho-social reactions to stress shape the level of optimism and pessimism. Using a sample of adult in

ESG did not immunize stocks during the COVID-19 crisis, but investments in intangible assets did.

Environmental, social and governance ("ESG") scores have been widely touted as indicators of share price resilience during the COVID-19 crisis. Contrary to this conventional wisdom, we present robust evidence that once industry affiliation, market-based measures of risk and accounting-based measures of performance, financial position and intangibles investments have been controlled for, ESG offers no such positive explanatory power for returns during the COVID crisis. Specifically, ESG is insignificant in fully specified returns regressions for each of the Q1 2020 COVID market crisis period an

Acceptability and Perceived Usefulness of a Digital Gambling Harm Minimization Tool: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Gambling consumers show low uptake and engagement with tools designed to support safer gambling practices and reduce the risk of experiencing gambling-related harms. We used co-design principles to design and develop a digital tool for safer gambling (BetWell) to overcome known barriers to tool uptake, including a focus on gambling problems. BetWell aims to increase awareness of personal gambling expenditure and knowledge of how gambling products function to support informed decision-making about gambling. It was designed based on behavioral change theories and presents a personali

AI-driven European Retrospective Database Study to predict disease onset in patients with epilepsy and depression.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy and depression are prevalent, chronic conditions with a complex, bidirectional relationship that is not yet fully understood and contributes significantly to morbidity, mortality and healthcare burden. Despite advances in machine learning (ML) for analysing large real-world datasets, there is a lack of large-scale, multinational studies applying ML to explore the interplay between epilepsy and depression. This study aimed to identify predictors of depression in patients with epilepsy (PWE) and predictors of epilepsy in patients with depression (PWD), uncovering association

Is there a need to include HIV, HBV and HCV viruses in the Saudi premarital screening program on the basis of their prevalence and transmission risk factors?

BACKGROUND: In January 2008, the Saudi Arabian health authority included mandatory testing for HIV, HBV and HCV viruses in the premarital screening program. Epidemiologically, there were few justifications for their inclusion as disease prevalences and distributions are poorly understood in the population. This study aims to provide information about HBV, HCV and HIV prevalences and risk factors for disease transmission and so produce evidence for informed decision-making on the inclusion of these infectious diseases in the screening program. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional descriptive stu

Deprescribing oral antidiabetics in elderly patients: Do electronic leaflets across the world address it?

UNLABELLED: Diabetes caused 6.7 million deaths in 2021, equating to one death every five seconds, with its global financial burden projected to rise from $1.32 trillion in 2015 to $2.12 trillion by 2030. Severe hypoglycemia necessitates interventions like deprescribing, behavioral strategies, and technology for prevention. Deprescribing aims to reduce unnecessary medication use, enhance rational prescribing, prevent prescribing cascades, and improve health outcomes in elderly patients. Evaluating electronic leaflets can support deprescribing based on patient-centered care and shared decision-m

Predicting postoperative hospice enrollment following stereotactic brain biopsy: a retrospective study and risk score development.

OBJECTIVE: Stereotactic brain biopsy (SBB) is a key diagnostic tool in neuro-oncology. Due to the poor prognosis for many tumors, a significant subset of patients transition to hospice care shortly after the procedure. Current tools inadequately predict which patients are less likely to benefit from SBB. This study aimed to define preoperative factors that limit enrollment in adjuvant treatment in SBB candidates by characterizing patients who enrolled in hospice soon after the procedure. Understanding the safety profile and diagnostic utility of SBB in the context of hospice enrollment is esse

Adolescents and young adults dating and HIV perceptions: A phenomenological study in N'Djamena, Chad.

The study investigates the interplay between adolescent dating behaviours and HIV perceptions in Chad, where adolescents and young adults (AYA) aged 15-24 years are disproportionately affected. Four focus group discussions (n = 48) were conducted with high school students in N'Djamena, stratified into beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries of a peer education programme. Using a phenomenological approach and the Colaizzi method in ATLAS.ti, we examined lived experiences around relationships, risk behaviours, and prevention strategies. Distinct gender differences emerged in dating motivations: male

Overdiagnosis and Overtreatment in Prostate Cancer.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most common malignancies among men worldwide. While prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening has improved early detection, it has also led to significant challenges regarding overdiagnosis and overtreatment. Overdiagnosis involves identifying indolent tumors unlikely to affect a patient's lifespan, while overtreatment refers to unnecessary interventions that can cause adverse effects such as urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and a reduced quality of life. This review highlights contributing factors, including the limitations of PSA testing, advanc
