A 75-year-old man with an abdominal aortic aneurysm underwent endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) using an AFX2 endograft with no endoleaks. Nevertheless, the aneurysmal sac increased by 8 mm at 24 months after EVAR despite no detectable endoleaks. Open surgical treatment was performed because of the risk of rupture. Intraoperative findings of much viscous cloudy fluid with no blood flow in the sac suggested that perigraft seroma resulted in sac enlargement. The endografts were replaced by a Dacron graft. Perigraft seroma should be considered as a cause of sac growth after EVAR with AFX2 when th

PURPOSE: Seroma is a well established complication of the repair of major abdominal wall hernias, occasionally requiring aspiration and reoperation. Medical talc seromadesis (MTS) has been described in the literature. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of MTS on seroma formation after onlay repair of incisional hernia.
METHODS: A retrospective review of a prospective database was conducted for 5 months from April 2011, when 21 consecutive patients received MTS. Outcomes were compared with a published and validated series from the same unit.
RESULTS: There were no differences i

PURPOSE: Seroma formation is one of the most common complications after mastectomy. Seromas can lead to repeated aspirations, increase the risk of infection, and potentially delay oncologic treatment. Several strategies have recently been employed to prevent seromas, but there is no definitive standard. We aim to determine whether perioperative glucocorticoids (GC) are safe and effective in preventing seromas in patients undergoing mastectomy.
METHODS: We performed a systematic search in five databases on November 12, 2024. Eligible studies included women who underwent mastectomy and received

BACKGROUND: Seroma, which is the most common complication after mastectomy and axillary dissection, is the leakage of the lymphovascular fluid into the dead space. It can cause local complications varying from delayed wound healing to infection and skin flap necrosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether platelet-rich plasma (PRP) reduces the risk of seroma formation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 24 Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into three groups of eight rats in each. For the rats in group 1, no additional procedures were carried out. The rats in groups 2 and 3 were

BACKGROUND: Prolonged and excessive drainage of serous fluid and seroma formation constitute the most common complications after mastectomy for breast carcinoma. Seroma formation delays wound healing, increases susceptibility to infection, skin flap necrosis, persistent pain and prolongs convalescence. For this, several techniques have been investigated to improve primary healing and minimize seroma formation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between June 2009 and July 2010 forty patients with breast carcinoma, scheduled for modified radical mastectomy, were randomly divided into 2 groups, the study gr

Among the possible complications of hemodialysis polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) graft creation, perigraft seromas are rare, but sometimes troublesome. Debridement with drainage is usually the method of treatment. However, recurrence is not unusual. Herein we describe 2 cases of recurrent perigraft seroma treated by a simple but effective surgical method: excision of the pseudocapsule and revision of the arterial inlet. This method converted the brachial artery to axillary vein dialysis graft into an upper arm axillary artery to axillary vein loop bridge graft and eliminated the seroma. No recu

INTRODUCTION: Chronic encapsulated seroma after retromuscular incisional hernia repair can be difficult to manage, particularly in symptomatic patients without evidence of mesh infection. Open anterior capsulectomy may require wide mesh exposure and carries potential risks of mesh infection and recurrent incisional hernia. Herein, I report a case of a chronic symptomatic seroma successfully managed by laparoscopic mesh-salvage fenestration.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old man developed a chronic symptomatic seroma after open Rives-Stoppa repair for a midline incisional hernia. CT demonstrate

BACKGROUND: Seroma frequently presents as a challenge, following gynecomastia correction surgery. This calls for percutaneous aspiration of accumulated fluid, from the iatrogenic dead space. The authors utilized internal quilting sutures and doxycycline instillation to analyze and compare their roles in seroma prevention.
OBJECTIVES: To compare the efficacy of intraoperative internal quilting sutures and doxycycline instillation, in preventing seroma formation and recurrence after gynecomastia surgery.
METHODS: After local review board and ethics committee approval, the authors conducted thi

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety of compressive taping in patients with seroma secondary to breast cancer surgery.
METHODS: This study was a nonrandomized clinical study of medical devices applied to women indicated for seroma aspiration puncture after breast cancer surgery in a public reference hospital in Brazil. The intervention consisted of applying compressive taping over the seroma fluctuation area and maintained for 5 days. Evaluated outcomes comprised dermal changes caused by taping, subjective symptoms reported during the intervention period, and percent change in the punctured volu

We present a case of chronic complex seroma following ventral incisional hernia repair with a mesh. The patient was managed initially conservatively by observation followed by multiple percutaneous aspirations and tube drainage. After 6 months of conservative management, the patient remained symptomatic and the surgical scar showed evidence of ulceration, skin necrosis and sinus formation. Therefore, a definitive surgical treatment in the form of capsulectomy and scarification using argon beam coagulator was performed. He remained asymptomatic with no sign of seroma development or hernia recur

INTRODUCTION: Frequent complications in incisional hernia surgery are re-herniation, wound infection and seroma formation. The use of subatmospheric pressure dressings such as the vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) device has been shown to be an effective way to accelerate healing of various wounds. Here, we describe the application of the VAC device as a postoperative dressing to prevent seroma formation after open incisional hernia repair.
METHODS: Three consecutive patients (63, 65 and 60 years of age, respectively) underwent incisional hernia repair. Patient body mass index was 30.9, 26.6 and

The arterial cannulation site for optimal tissue perfusion and cerebral protection during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) for surgical treatment of acute type A aortic dissection remains controversial. Right axillary artery cannulation confers significant advantages, because it provides antegrade arterial perfusion during cardiopulmonary bypass, and allows continuous antegrade cerebral perfusion during hypothermic circulatory arrest, thereby minimizing global cerebral ischemia. However, right axillary artery cannulation has been associated with serious complications, including problems with syste

Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair (LIHR) is a widely adopted technique favored for its minimally invasive approach and positive patient outcomes. However, postoperative seroma formation remains a significant issue. This study investigates the efficacy of defect closure combined with hernia belt compression during LIHR to reduce the incidence of seroma formation. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 375 patients who underwent LIHR at our institution from January 2021 to January 2024. Among them, 121 patients received defect closure combined with hernia belt compression (Group A), 135 pat

INTRODUCTION: Postoperative drains are commonly used after mastectomy to reduce seroma formation, but evidence of the benefit remains unclear. We evaluated the effect of postoperative drains on seroma formation and infection after mastectomy in a retrospective institutional study.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We compared women with breast cancer who had mastectomy with or without suction drain in 2020. Data were retrieved from original patient files. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for seroma and infection risk were calculated using logistic regression, and seroma volume was anal

BackgroundInguinal hernia repair, particularly using TAPP, is common in males, and acclaimed for minimal invasiveness but often complicated by seromas, significantly affecting recovery and health care costs.MethodsThis retrospective study analyzed data from 266 male patients with unilateral indirect inguinal hernia who underwent transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) repair. We divided the patients into a training set (n = 188) and a validation set (n = 78). We employed logistic regression to identify independent risk factors for post-TAPP seroma and developed a nomogram to predict the occurrence

BACKGROUND: Surgical bleeding complications typically occur a few hours or days after the operation. Due to their rarity, late-onset bleeding complications are seldom discussed in the literature. Mastectomy is a common procedure, which is often associated with the need for repeated seroma aspirations. Although seroma aspirations have also been associated with complications, the area remains insufficiently studied. This study aimed to investigate the risk of late bleeding complications after mastectomy, especially those associated with seroma aspiration. METHODS: Data from all patients undergoi

BACKGROUND: Seroma is one of the most common postoperative complications following hernia repair. This study evaluated whether the local application of Pseudomonas aeruginosa injection (PA-MSHA) could reduce the duration of seroma and promote healing of the graft and surrounding tissues after abdominal wall incisional hernia repair.
METHODS: 56 Sprague-Dawley rats were used to assess the efficacy and optimal dosage of PA-MSHA in reducing seroma formation after latissimus dorsi resection. 54 rats underwent abdominal wall hernia repair and were randomly assigned to three groups: sham, saline, o
