Beyond Exhaustion: Shame, Identity Disruption, and Functional Collapse in Autistic Burnout.

Autistic burnout is typically defined as chronic exhaustion with functional impacts on everyday life. It appears common across work, study, and relationships, yet its emotional and relational dimensions remain underexamined. To document lived experiences of autistic burnout among autistic adults and to identify emotional and relational processes (e.g. shame and masking) that may shape onset, maintenance, and recovery. Eleven autistic adults participated in semi-structured interviews or written responses conducted online between July 2023 and November 2024. Data were analysed using template ana

Do patients with different mental disorders show specific aspects of shame?

Shame is related to several mental disorders. We assume that facets of shame, namely bodily, cognitive and existential shame, may occur in typical patterns in mental and personality disorders. An excessive level of shame may lead to psychopathological symptoms. However, a lack of shame may also lead to distress, for instance as it may facilitate violation of social norms and thus may promote interpersonal problems. In this study we investigated facets of shame in females suffering from various mental disorders and personality disorders presumably associated with specific aspects of shame. Wome

Dopaminergic state modulates shame and contextual emotional responses in Parkinson's disease.

BackgroundShame is frequent in Parkinson's disease (PD) and negatively affects quality of life, yet its dopaminergic modulation remains unclear.MethodsWe investigated the effect of dopaminergic replacement therapy (DRT) on shame in 41 fluctuating PD patients using an experimental tailored shame induction task. At visit 1, participants were presented with 60 short written scenarios (neutral, non-PD-related shame, PD-related shame). A tailored selection of 12 scenarios (4 per category) was generated in three steps: (1) initial rating of all 60 scenarios on a shame/embarrassment visual analogue s

Examining Shame Types and PTSD Among Survivors of Lifetime Sexual Victimization.

Lifetime sexual victimization history (i.e. experiences in childhood, adolescence, and/or adulthood), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and multiple types of general and assault-related shame were examined among 95 community and college women. Participants completed surveys assessing sexual victimization histories, shame, and a clinician-administered diagnostic interview for PTSD. Levels of multiple types of shame were compared among survivors of lifetime sexual victimization with current PTSD (n = 31), survivors of lifetime sexual victimization without current PTSD (n = 33), and non-trau

Does change in trauma-related shame predict change in PTSD symptomatology?

OBJECTIVE: Trauma-related shame (TR-shame) is associated with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms. However, research findings are inconsistent regarding the role of TR-shame in PTSD treatment. The purpose of this study was to examine if change in TR-shame predicted change in PTSD symptoms in treatment. METHOD: A sample of 462 adults who received PTSD treatment at a Partial Hospitalization Program completed questionnaires measuring TR-shame (i.e., Trauma-Related Shame Inventory; TRSI) and PTSD symptoms (PTSD Checklist for DSM-5; PCL-5). Latent growth curve models were estimated to ex

Contrasting mental health correlates of physical and sexual abuse-related shame.

OBJECTIVE: This study represents an initial attempt to contrast behavioural and mental health correlates of shame as a result of physical abuse (PA) and sexual abuse (SA). Because they are distinctive forms of injury, it is possible that corollary shame from these injuries follows unique trajectories and ultimately results in different health challenges. METHOD: Self-report data from a survey on the health of youth receiving protective services for reasons of PA and SA was used. It included standardised measures, such as the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, Trauma Symptoms Checklist for Childr

Longitudinal Relations Between Childhood Maltreatment, Maltreatment-Specific Shame, and Postpartum Psychopathology.

The persistence of shame-based reactions to child maltreatment (CM) has been associated with poor posttraumatic adjustment. Despite evidence that the postpartum period is a vulnerable time for women with CM histories, little is known about the consequences of maltreatment-specific (MS) shame for postpartum functioning. The current study examined individual differences in MS shame among a sample of women during the postpartum period ( n = 100) as well as prospective relations from MS shame to postpartum psychopathology at 6-, 12-, 15-, and 18-month postpartum. Linear growth curve (LGC) analyses

"I feel full with shame": A qualitative perspective on gastric interoceptive sensibility.

BACKGROUND: "Am I hungry? Did I overeat at lunch?" Gastric interoception - the sensing, interpretation, and regulation of signals from the gastrointestinal system - is central to daily behavior and homeostasis. Dysfunctional gastric interoception has been proposed as a maintenance factor in both eating disorders and gastrointestinal symptoms. However, no qualitative research has explored how individuals across these groups, and the general population, subjectively experience gastrointestinal signals, known as gastric interoceptive sensibility. This study aimed to investigate how gastric sensat

Online Sexual Harassment, Disordered Eating Attitudes, and Body Shame in Young Women.

Sexual harassment is associated with disordered eating in young women, directly and indirectly, via body shame. However, today, young women are not only experiencing sexual harassment in-person, but also online. We recruited a non-clinical sample of young women (N = 146) to examine the direct and indirect relationships between online sexual harassment, disordered eating attitudes, and body shame. Findings revealed that online sexual harassment positively predicted disordered eating attitudes directly and indirectly, via body shame. These findings offer initial support for examining the utility

Predictors of Stigma, Guilt, and Shame among Adults Bereaved by Fatal Overdose.

With the spectacular rise of US overdose deaths, bereavement for these affected families has become a matter of increasing concern. Qualitative research has highlighted the role of stigmatization as well as guilt and shame among this population. However, the magnitude and pre-death predictors of stigmatization, guilt, and shame have yet to be assessed quantitatively. In the current study, we assess the magnitude of stigmatization, guilt, and shame among 115 adults bereaved by overdose by drawing comparisons with 185 adults bereaved by suicide. Results revealed no significant differences regard

Religiosity and hazardous substance use: The moderating role of trauma-related shame.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Hazardous substance use is a major public health concern among individuals with a history of sexual victimization. Although increased religiosity has been known to serve as a protective factor against hazardous substance use, religious individuals with a history of sexual victimization may be at a greater risk for hazardous substance use due to difficulties reconciling sexual victimization with their religious beliefs. Individuals with greater trauma-related shame may engage in hazardous substance use as a means of coping with the traumatic event. METHOD: The presen

The relationship between shame, perfectionism and Anorexia Nervosa: A grounded theory study.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to explore the potential relationship between shame, perfectionism and Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and their impact on recovery from AN. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 people currently accessing services for AN. Interviews were transcribed and analysed using constructivist-grounded theory methodology. RESULTS: A model was developed which found a vicious cycle between shame and perfectionism. Participants tried to alleviate their feelings of shame by striving for perfectionism, however failing caused them more shame. Participants who

No one needs to know! Medical abortion: Secrecy, shame, and emotional distancing.

In 2021, 10,841 abortions were carried out in Norway, of which 95.3% were medical abortions. In this phenomenological study, we explore women's experiences connected to performing a medical abortion at home. We conducted 22 interviews and analyzed the data using Giorgi's descriptive phenomenological method. Our analysis revealed four crucial constituents: The logical and sensible choice-doubt beneath the surface; Secrecy and the dubious comfort of hidden shame; Emotional distancing as a coping strategy; and Moving on-and revisiting the meaning of the abortion. We discuss and reflect on these f

Examining the relationship between shame and social anxiety disorder: A systematic review.

This paper is the first systematic review of the literature on the relationship between shame and social anxiety (SA). We reviewed a total of 60 peer-reviewed empirical articles that met criteria for inclusion. We begin by summarizing literature investigating the empirical association between shame and SA and review literature on whether this association is impacted by cultural or diagnostic differences. Next, we briefly describe the updated version of Rapee and Heimberg's (1997) cognitive-behavioral model of social anxiety disorder (SAD; Heimberg, Brozovich, & Rapee, 2014) and propose how sha

Differential relationships of guilt and shame on posttraumatic stress disorder among veterans.

OBJECTIVE: Despite important conceptual differences between shame and guilt, literature distinguishing these emotions in relation to posttrauma functioning for veterans has been largely theoretical. This is the first study to concurrently examine trauma-related guilt and internalized shame in relation to PTSD severity as the dependent variable. Our primary aim was to examine guilt and shame on PTSD symptom severity within the same model. A secondary aim was to evaluate whether trauma-related guilt can occur independent of shame. METHOD: Participants were 144 veterans seeking PTSD treatment. R

Posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms and attitudes about social support: Does shame matter?

Considerable research has examined the association between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and social support. One facet of this relationship that deserves greater attention concerns trauma survivors' negative expectations towards social support, termed negative network orientation. To expand our understanding of negative network orientation, the current study examined shame as a possible mediator in the relationship between PTSD symptoms and negative network orientation, in a sample of 202 female survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV). Additionally, a history of child abus

The Polkinghorne Report on Fetal Research: nice recommendations, shame about the reasoning.

In 1989, in the wake of the first operations to transplant fetal tissue into the brains of sufferers from Parkinson's Disease, the UK Code of Practice governing the use of the fetus for research was overhauled by an eminent committee under the chairmanship of the Reverend Dr John Polkinghorne. The Polkinghorne Report has, however, attracted remarkably little comment or analysis. This paper is believed to be the first to subject it to sustained ethical and legal scrutiny. The author concludes that, although the committee's recommendations meet the major objections to the Code of Practice, the r

Transformative pathways: shame and fear of compassion as potential mechanisms of change in psychotherapy.

OBJECTIVE: It has been hypothesized that shame and fear of receiving compassion from others are interrelated processes in psychotherapy. However, little is known about how these factors influence each other in a clinical setting. This study examined the relationships between shame, fear of receiving compassion from others, and symptom distress at a within-patient level throughout psychotherapy. METHOD: The transdiagnostic sample consisted of 1,134 inpatients at Modum Bad receiving psychological treatment. Weekly self-reports measured symptom distress, fear of receiving compassion, and shame.
