Submandibular gland duct endoscopy. Diagnostic value for salivary duct disorders in comparison to conventional radiography, sialography, and ultrasonography.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the usefulness of endoscopy as a procedure for the diagnosis of submandibular gland duct disorders. Endoscopy of the submandibular glands was performed on 12 patients with symptoms of obstructive sialoadenitis to identify the cause of obstruction. The endoscopic findings were then compared to those of diagnostic procedures such as conventional radiography, sialography, and ultrasonography. Six normal subjects also underwent endoscopy to better understand the normal findings of the duct system. Endoscopy demonstrated salivary gland calculus in 5 of 12 pa

Comparison of the distribution of the Bartholin and/or Rivinus salivary ducts assessed with magnetic resonance-sialography in patients with ranula and in healthy subjects.

BACKGROUND: The distribution and drainage of the sublingual gland ducts have various patterns that might be related to sublingual gland-related diseases, including ranula. This study aimed to elucidate the characteristics of the distribution of Bartholin and/or Rivinus ducts in patients with ranula using magnetic resonance (MR) sialography. METHODS: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, the distributions and drainage patterns of sublingual gland ducts on MR sialography were classified in 74 subjects without sublingual gland-related disease as confirmed by both medical history and clini

An experimental chronic obstructive sialadenitis model by partial ligation of the submandibular duct characterised by sialography, histology, and transmission electron microscopy.

Extensive investigation into the mechanism of chronic obstructive sialadenitis (COS) calls for a reliable model that mimics the onset and progression of the disease. Duct obstruction is closely correlated with COS, and partial duct obstruction is usually observed in COS. Partial ligation of ducts or vessels is a valid treatment to mimic pathological processes in certain animal studies. In this study, we developed a novel animal model of COS by incomplete ligation of Wharton's duct and clarified the corresponding morphological alterations in the submandibular gland. Partial ligation of Wharton'

Status of the remaining parotid duct and gland following superficial parotidectomy.

The changes in Stensen's duct and remaining parotid tissue following superficial parotidectomy have not been studied previously. The aim of this clinical case control study is to describe these changes using sialography and CT-sialography techniques. Fourteen superficial parotidectomy cases underwent parotid sialography bilaterally. CT sialography was also done. Stensen's duct was patent in 11 cases (79%), and non-patent in three cases (21%). Its angle in relation to our reference line was 20 degrees in operated cases versus 37 degrees for the non-operated cases. Following superficial parotide

[Sialographic and sonographic diagnosis of salivary gland diseases].

The diagnostic value of sialography and ultrasonography was studied retrospectively in 130 patients with diseases of the salivary gland. In the diagnosis of tumours (sensitivity: 97.5% vs 52.5%), acute inflammatory diseases (sensitivity: 70% vs 40%) and abscesses (sensitivity: 100% vs 25%) ultrasound was more accurate than sialography. Even in the diagnosis of calculi, ultrasound gave good results (sensitivity: 71.4%) and should be performed before the more invasive sialography technique. In chronic inflammatory diseases, sialography continues to be the technique of choice.

Computed tomography and ultrasonography in parotid tumors.

To determine the most appropriate radiographic approach to parotid tumors, computed tomography (CT) was performed in 65 patients with 33 benign tumors, 19 malignant tumors, 3 abscesses and 10 other lesions with a clinical appearance of tumor. In 22 of the 65 cases CT-sialography and in 26 ultrasonography (US) were also performed. The mass was well recognized on CT without sialography in all patients, and the lesion was also well evaluated in all those examined with US. At CT-sialography the tumor was well shown, but this method made it difficult to differentiate a benign from a malignant lesio
