The Persistent Issue of Simulator Sickness in Naval Aviation Training.

Virtual simulations offer nearly unlimited training potential for naval aviation due to the wide array of scenarios that can be simulated in a safe, reliable, and cost-effective environment. This versatility has created substantial interest in using existing and emerging virtual technology to enhance training scenarios. However, the virtual simulations themselves may hinder training initiatives by inducing simulator sickness among the trainees, which is a series of symptoms similar to motion sickness that can arise from simulator use. Simulator sickness has been a problem for military aviation

Simulator training for endobronchial ultrasound: a randomised controlled trial.

Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) is very operator dependent and has a long learning curve. Simulation-based training might shorten the learning curve, and an assessment tool with solid validity evidence could ensure basic competency before unsupervised performance.A total of 16 respiratory physicians, without EBUS experience, were randomised to either virtual-reality simulator training or traditional apprenticeship training on patients, and then each physician performed EBUS-TBNA procedures on three patients. Three blinded, independent assessor asses

The role of experience and advanced training on performance in a motorcycle simulator.

Motorcyclists are over-represented in collision statistics. While many collisions may be the direct fault of another road user, a considerable number of fatalities and injuries are due to the actions of the rider. While increased riding experience may improve skills, advanced training courses may be required to evoke the safest riding behaviours. The current research assessed the impact of experience and advanced training on rider behaviour using a motorcycle simulator. Novice riders, experienced riders and riders with advanced training traversed a virtual world through varying speed limits an

Virtual reality-based simulator for training in regional anaesthesia.

BACKGROUND: The safe performance of regional anaesthesia (RA) requires theoretical knowledge and good manual skills. Virtual reality (VR)-based simulators may offer trainees a safe environment to learn and practice different techniques. However, currently available VR simulators do not consider individual anatomy, which limits their use for realistic training. We have developed a VR-based simulator that can be used for individual anatomy and for different anatomical regions. METHODS: Individual data were obtained from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) w

Shoulder dystocia: using simulation to train providers and teams.

Shoulder dystocia is an obstetric emergency that requires immediate recognition and a well-coordinated response. This response must include effective application of the maneuvers proven to relieve the impaction of the fetal shoulder and timely hand-off of the newborn to the neonatology team. The rare frequency of shoulder dystocia, coupled with patient safety concerns and the medico-legal environment, limits the opportunity of providers to learn and practice the management of shoulder dystocia. Training, especially simulation-based training, has been demonstrated to improve the management of s

Web-based VR training simulator for percutaneous rhizotomy.

Virtual Reality offers great potential for surgical training--yet is typically limited by the dedicated and expensive equipment required. Web-based VR has the potential to offer a much cheaper alternative, in which simulations of fundamental techniques are downloaded from a server to run within a web browser. The equipment requirement is modest--an Internet-connected PC or small workstation--and the simulation can be accessed worldwide. In a collaboration between computer scientists and neurosurgeons, we have studied the use of web-based VR to train neurosurgeons in Percutaneous Rhizotomy--a t

Does training on an anaesthesia simulator lead to improvement in performance?

We have used the Leiden anaesthesia simulator, which makes use of a standard anaesthesia machine and monitors, and realistically simulates the anaesthesia work place. After obtaining informed consent, 28 anaesthetists and anaesthesia trainees in one hospital took part in the study. All participants were exposed to a pre-scripted simulated "control" scenario of anaphylactic shock (phase 1). The sessions were videotaped and the performances of individual participants were evaluated using a standardized scoring scheme. During phase 2, the participants were allocated randomly to undergo training i

Three-Dimensional Printing Simulator for Endoscopic Adenoidectomy Training.

This article presents an innovative approach to adenoidectomy training through the development of a 3-dimensional (3D) printing model, termed e-A.L.Ex (endoscopic-adenoidectomy learning experience). Adenoidectomy, a common procedure in otolaryngology, has evolved with the integration of endoscopic techniques, necessitating precise training methodologies. The model, created from computed tomography scans and utilizing 3D printing technology, accurately replicates anatomical structures crucial for adenoidectomy. Surgical simulation with bovine thymus mimics adenoid tissue, providing a realistic

Impact of a simulation-based training on the experience of the beginning of residency.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to evaluate the impact of an immersive simulation session on the experience of the beginning of residency. METHODS: The interventional group consisted of newly recruited residents in 2019, who participated in the workshop presenting four emergency scenarios frequently encountered during night shifts; the control group comprised residents who had begun their internship in 2018, without having participated in the simulation workshop. The level of psychological stress and self-confidence were self-estimated in the simulation group before and immediately after the workshop.

Low-Cost Vegetal Simulation for Ear Reconstruction (Otopoiesis) Training: A Technical Report.

Autologous ear reconstruction (otopoiesis) involves a steep learning curve because costal cartilage is a nonrenewable biological resource with no margin for error. Consequently, early preclinical training is valuable, yet high-fidelity commercial simulators remain expensive and inaccessible in resource-limited settings. This report describes the educational feasibility and implementation of a low-cost, low-fidelity vegetal simulation model (raw potato) for early-stage otopoiesis carving training within a continuing medical education workshop. Sixteen maxillofacial surgery residents (N=16), org

Quantum leadership: new approach in managing shoulder dystocia in simulation-based training.

BACKGROUND: Shoulder dystocia, a challenging condition for obstetricians, poses significant risks to both maternal and neonatal health, including maternal postpartum hemorrhage, neonatal hypoxia, and brachial plexus injury. Despite being unpredictable and unpreventable, effective management can mitigate these risks. Miscommunication and poor leadership are responsible for 72% of medical errors, which further highlights the importance of robust leadership skills in obstetric emergencies. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A qualitative study involving 20 participants through structured interviews as
