Investigating a therapist-guided, parent-assisted remote digital behavioural intervention for tics in children and adolescents-'Online Remote Behavioural Intervention for Tics' (ORBIT) trial: protocol of an internal pilot study and single-blind randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Tourette syndrome and chronic tic disorder are common, disabling childhood-onset conditions. Guidelines recommend that behavioural therapy should be offered as first-line treatment for children with tics. However, there are very few trained behaviour therapists for tics and many patients cannot access appropriate care. This trial investigates whether an internet-delivered intervention for tics can reduce severity of symptoms. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This parallel-group, single-blind, randomised controlled superiority trial with an internal pilot will recruit children and young peo

Effects of 6-month customized home-based exercise on motor development, bone strength, and parental stress in children with simple congenital heart disease: a single-blinded randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: New "noncardiac" problems in children with congenital heart disease (CHD), such as developmental delay or long-term neurodevelopmental impairments, have attracted considerable attention in recent years. It is hypothesized that exercise might attenuate CHD-associated neurodevelopmental impairments; however, this has not been thoroughly investigated. The objective of this prospective, single-blinded, randomized controlled experiment was to evaluate the impact of customized home-based exercise for children with CHD. METHODS: Children aged 0-5 years with echocardiography-confirmed sim

Psychological flexibility in everyday life during post-surgical recovery in youths undergoing spinal fusion surgery and the association with parental responses-a prospective daily diary study using a single-case approach.

BACKGROUND: Chronic post-surgical pain (CPSP) affects ≈20% of children after major surgery, and the condition is associated with functional disability and ill-health. Psychological flexibility (PF) and parental factors have been shown to predict CPSP in youth following spinal fusion surgery. However, the daily dynamics of these processes throughout post-surgical recovery remain unknown. This study aimed at exploring how PF fluctuates in everyday life for youths undergoing spinal fusion surgery, and to investigate the associations between parental responses and adolescent PF. METHODS: Adolesce

Trajectories of Change, Illness Understanding, and Parental Worries in Children and Adolescents Undergoing Internet-Delivered Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Functional Abdominal Pain Disorders: Protocol for a Single-Case Design and Explorative Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Functional abdominal pain disorders (FAPDs) are common in young people and are characterized by persistent or recurrent abdominal symptoms without apparent structural or biochemical abnormalities. FAPDs are associated with diminished quality of life, school absence, increased health care use, and comorbid anxiety and depression. Exposure-based internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) has demonstrated efficacy in alleviating abdominal symptoms and improving quality of life. However, a deeper understanding of effect mechanisms and identification of possible additional t

The impact of parental disruption on Kuwaiti adolescents: a comparative study on children from intact and broken families.

Divorce, which was once a rare phenomenon in Kuwait, now occurs in nearly one third of all marriages. The purpose of this study was to compare the differences in self-esteem, locus of control, and attitude toward parents between Kuwaiti adolescents from divorced and intact families. The results revealed that adolescents from divorced families showed higher self-esteem than adolescents from intact families. Within the divorced families, females showed higher self-esteem compared to males. There was no difference in locus of control between divorced and intact families nor were there any gender

Income, family characteristics, and physical violence toward children.

OBJECTIVE: This paper discusses the ways in which existing microeconomic theories of partner abuse, intra-family bargaining, and distribution of resources within families may contribute to our current understanding of physical child abuse. The empirical implications of this discussion are then tested on data from the 1985 National Family Violence Survey (NFVS) in order to estimate the effects of income, family characteristics, and state characteristics on physical violence toward children. METHODOLOGY: The sample consists of 2,760 families with children from the NFVS. Probit and ordered probi

Exploring the factors behind single-child households in Iranian families: a qualitative study.

Single childhood is a growing social phenomenon in Iran that occurs under the influence of various factors that need to be identified. Therefore, the current research was conducted to explain the reasons behind only single children in Western Iran. This qualitative research was conducted using a conventional qualitative content analysis approach in Lorestan province, western Iran. The study participants were parents with one child who no longer wanted to have more children. Key informants were also involved in the study. To identify participants, purposive and snowball sampling were used. Data

Parental absence and suicidal ideation in depressed adolescents: Differential mediating roles of father-child vs. mother-child relationships and the moderating effect of sex.

BACKGROUND: Parental absence is a significant risk factor for adolescent suicidal ideation, yet the relational mechanisms and sex-specific vulnerabilities within clinical populations remain under-explored. This study investigated how different forms of parental absence relate to suicidal ideation through father-child and mother-child relationships, and whether these associations are moderated by adolescent sex. METHODS: A nationwide multi-center cross-sectional study was conducted from December 2020 to December 2023. We recruited 2467 clinically diagnosed depressed adolescents from 14 hospita

Post-Divorce Parenting and Co-Parenting in Times of Crisis.

This study examines how divorced single parents make sense of their parenting and co-parenting experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic and the February 6, 2023, Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes in Türkiye. Using an interpretative phenomenological analysis design, the study draws on two-stage, semi-structured online interviews with 23 divorced parents who had been officially divorced for 1-5 years, lived with at least one child under the age of 18, and had experienced the crisis conditions addressed in the study, including direct exposure to the February 6, 2023, earthquakes. Gendered Associations between Single Parenthood and Child Behavior Problems in the United Kingdom.

Internalizing and externalizing behavior problems are associated with a variety of negative child outcomes, but these conclusions have been drawn from research that usually compares children in families with two biological, married parents to all other family types. We compare behavior problems across two-parent, single-mother, and single-father families, which allows us to explore competing gender theories as possible explanations for why child behavior outcomes may be different across these three categories. Results from analyses of the UK Millennium Cohort Study suggest that while children

Single-mother households and risk of poor dietary quality among schoolchildren: results from a nationwide survey.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic prompted lifestyle changes and increased parental stress and food insecurity, raising concern for single-parent households. This study investigates disparities in schoolchildren's diet quality in single-parent and two-parent households in Japan before, during and after the April 2020 state of emergency, considering financial status and parental meal preparation skills. METHODS: Data from a nationwide cross-sectional study conducted in December 2020 were analysed. A stratified two-stage cluster sampling design was used to select households with fifth-grade and

Parental marital status and anxiety symptoms in adolescents: the mediating effect of childhood maltreatment.

Although previous studies have established the association between parental marital status and mental health problems in adolescents, however, the adverse effects of incomplete family settings and childhood maltreatment on adolescent anxiety symptoms have not been fully investigated. Moreover, whether childhood maltreatment can mediate the relationship between parental marital status and anxiety symptoms remains unclear. A population-based cross-sectional study was performed among 35,573 adolescents in elementary schools across 17 provinces in China. And childhood maltreatment, resilience, and

[Family dysfunction in adolescents with suicidal behavior and in adolescents with conduct disorders].

INTRODUCTION: The period of life known as adolescence generally refers to transition from childhood to adulthood. Adolescents' progress toward autonomy involves remaining connected with, as well as separated from parents. Young people and their parents usually have mixed feelings about adolescent autonomy and attachment. An estimated 50% of children born in the 80-s have spent part of their developmental years in single-parent households. Divorce is almost always a stressful event in children's lives. Youthful suicide rate has increased dramatically and is the third leading cause of death amon

A BHK-21 cell culture-adapted tick-borne encephalitis virus mutant is attenuated for neuroinvasiveness.

We derived the baby hamster kidney (BHK)-21 cell culture-adapted, tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus mutant. To reveal the pathogenicity of the TBE virus, we compared the pathogenicity of the mutant (Oshima Cl-1) and parental (Oshima 5-10) virus in mouse model. The neurovirulence of mutant in mice was identical to that of parent. However, the level of neuroinvasiveness was higher for parent than for mutant. The degrees of viremia and virus titers in the spleen were lower in mice that were inoculated subcutaneously (s.c.) with mutant than in mice that received parent. Unlike parent, mutant was

Single-parenthood and health conditions among children receiving public assistance in Japan: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Children's healthy development is important. While governmental public assistance benefits financially troubled families, it cannot compensate for a lack of social support. Single-parenthood is a health risk factor for children owing to low-income-associated food insecurity and stress. No study has investigated the association between single-parenthood and health status in children from families receiving public assistance. This study aimed to examine the association between single-parent households and children's health among public assistance recipients in Japan by using linkage

Unpacking parental accommodation: Relationship to parent distress tolerance and cognitive styles.

Accommodation, or changes to parent behaviors or routines to avoid or alleviate child distress related to psychopathology, is one maladaptive parent response that is common in anxiety disorders and associated with poor youth outcomes. Little is known about the processes in parents that contribute to accommodation. Thus, the current study examined how accommodation relates to parent distress tolerance and cognitive styles. The present study utilized data from 295 parents (289 female) of children ages 4-10 who were recruited for a randomized trial of an internet-based single-session intervention

Risk behaviours, victimisation and mental distress among adolescents in different family structures.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown an elevated risk with regard to social and behavioural domains in adolescents of single parents. However, the diversity of single parent families concerning gender of the resident parent has seldom been taken into account when investigating the relation between family structure and children's negative outcomes. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate risk behaviours, victimisation and mental distress among adolescents in different family structures using more detailed sub-groups of single parents (i.e., single mother, single father and shared phys

Conducting filial therapy with homeless parents.

Homelessness and the associated feelings of loss are highly distressing for parents and their children who experience them. The implications for young, homeless children are clinically significant, as these children tend to display higher rates of depressive, anxious feelings. The literature suggests that parents are especially challenged during a period of homelessness, as they cannot provide for their children financially or emotionally. Evidence-based mental health interventions, such as filial therapy, may assist the parent-child relationship by promoting healing during a highly distressin
