Smoking cessation to prevent death and tuberculosis recurrence after treatment: A prospective cohort study with a seven-year follow-up in China.

BACKGROUND: Although there is consistent evidence that smoking is a risk factor associated with tuberculosis (TB), whether smoking cessation improves treatment outcomes and reduces the risk of TB recurrence remains understudied. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study with a seven-year follow-up in China. We recruited newly-diagnosed TB patients and classified them as non-smokers, ex-smokers, and current smokers. Current smokers were invited to participate in a smoking cessation intervention programme. We used a Cox proportional hazards model to assess the risk of death among TB pati

Maternal exposure to tobacco smoke, alcohol and caffeine, and risk of anorectal atresia: National Birth Defects Prevention Study 1997-2003.

.Anorectal atresia is a congenital anomaly with mostly unknown risk factors. Studies have provided evidence of teratogenic effects of alcohol and tobacco, and animal studies have suggested that caffeine may potentiate their teratogenicity. However, it is unclear how these factors affect the risk of anorectal atresia. We analysed data from maternal telephone interviews in a multistate case-control study with 464 infants with anorectal atresia and 4940 infants with no major birth defects. We used unconditional logistic regression to determine the association of exposure to smoking, environmental

Adapting and Implementing a School-Based "Implementation Intentions" Program Within FRESHAIR4Life to Prevent Smoking Initiation Among Adolescents in Greece: A Study Protocol.

Background: Most individuals develop smoking habits in adolescence, highlighting the need for a smoking prevention program targeted at this age group. The use of "Implementation Intentions" (If-Then plans) about how to refuse a cigarette combined with anti-smoking messages has been shown to be effective in the UK. However, there is a scarcity of data regarding school-based smoking prevention interventions among adolescents available to countries with high tobacco consumption rates, like Greece. Objectives: To describe the cultural adaptation procedure and the evaluation protocol for the school

NADH Intraperitoneal Injection Prevents Lung Inflammation in a BALB/C Mice Model of Cigarette Smoke-Induced Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Cigarette smoke is one of the main factors in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), a respiratory syndrome marked by persistent respiratory symptoms and increasing airway obstruction. Perturbed NAD+/NADH levels may play a role in various diseases, including lung disorders like COPD. In our study, we investigated the preventive effect of NADH supplementation in an experimental model of COPD induced by cigarette smoke extract (CSE). N = 64 mice randomly distributed in eight groups were injected with NADH (two doses of 100 mg/kg or 200 mg/kg) or dexamethasone (2 mg/kg) before being expose

Do school-based smoking preventive interventions have unintended effects? Post hoc analysis of the Focus cluster randomised controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Public health interventions are designed to improve specific health-related outcomes; however, they may also produce negative side effects, such as substitution use, psychological or social harms. Knowledge about the unintended effects of school-based smoking preventive interventions is sparse. Hence, this study examined these potential unintended effects of the smoking-reducing intervention, Focus, among students in the vocational education and training setting. DESIGN: Cluster randomised controlled trial stratified by school type with 5 months follow-up. SETTING AND PARTICIPANT

The Toll-Like Receptor 5 agonist flagellin prevents Non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae-induced infection in cigarette smoke-exposed mice.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The major bacterial cause of COPD exacerbations is non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi). 25 to over 80% of cases are associated with NTHi. This susceptibility to infection involves a defective production of interleukin (IL)-22 which plays an important role in mucosal defense. Prophylactic administration of flagellin, a Toll-like receptor 5 (TLR5) agonist, protects healthy mice against respiratory pathogenic bacteria. We hypothesized that TLR5-mediated stimulation of lung immunity might pre

Feeling safer: effectiveness, feasibility, and acceptability of continuous pulse oximetry for people who smoke opioids at overdose prevention services in British Columbia, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is the most common mode of unregulated opioid consumption overall and implicated in fatal overdoses in British Columbia (BC). In part, perception of decreased risk (e.g., fewer who smoke carry naloxone kits) and limited smoking-specific harm reduction services contribute to overdose deaths. Overdose prevention services (OPS) offer supervised settings for drug use. Continuous pulse oximetry, common in acute care, allows real-time, remote oxygen monitoring. We evaluated the effectiveness of a novel continuous pulse oximetry protocol aimed at allowing physical distancing (as r

Chronic Exposure to Cigarette Smoke Affects the Ileum and Colon of Guinea Pigs Differently. Relaxin (RLX-2, Serelaxin) Prevents Most Local Damage.

Cigarette smoking (CS) is the cause of several organ and apparatus diseases. The effects of smoke in the gut are partially known. Accumulating evidence has shown a relationship between smoking and inflammatory bowel disease, prompting us to investigate the mechanisms of action of smoking in animal models. Despite the role played by neuropeptides in gut inflammation, there are no reports on their role in animal models of smoking exposure. The hormone relaxin has shown anti-inflammatory properties in the intestine, and it might represent a putative therapy to prevent gut damage caused by smoking

Collagen deposition in lung parenchyma driven by depletion of interstitial Lyve-1+ macrophages prevents cigarette smoke-induced emphysema and loss of airway function.

INTRODUCTION: Collagen is essential for maintaining lung structure and function and its remodeling has been associated with respiratory diseases including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, the cellular mechanisms driving collagen remodeling and the functional implications of this process in the pathophysiology of pulmonary diseases remain poorly understood. METHODS: To address this question, we employed Lyve1wt/cre ; Csf1rflox/flox mice with specific depletion of Lyve-1+ macrophages and assessed the content, types and organization of collagen in lung compartments at stead

Effectiveness of school-based interventions for preventing tobacco smoking initiation among young people in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review protocol.

BACKGROUND: Despite the commendable progress made globally in tobacco control, the world is falling short of achieving a 30% relative reduction in current tobacco use by 2025. The African region remains the least in the efforts in fighting the tobacco epidemic and is most exploited by the tobacco industry. Schools have been continuously used for over three decades as a setting for delivering youth smoking prevention programmes; however, the evidence of the effectiveness of those school-based interventions provides varying outcomes. Also, interventions that proved to be effective, in high-incom

Vitamin C to Decrease the Effects of Smoking in Pregnancy on Infant Lung Function (VCSIP): Rationale, design, and methods of a randomized, controlled trial of vitamin C supplementation in pregnancy for the primary prevention of effects of in utero tobacco smoke exposure on infant lung function and respiratory health.

Despite strong anti-smoking efforts, at least 12% of American women cannot quit smoking when pregnant resulting in >450,000 smoke-exposed infants born yearly. Smoking during pregnancy is the largest preventable cause of childhood respiratory illness including wheezing and asthma. Recent studies have shown a protective effect of vitamin C supplementation on the lung function of offspring exposed to in utero smoke in a non-human primate model and an initial human trial. Vitamin C to Decrease the Effects of Smoking in Pregnancy on Infant Lung Function (VCSIP) is a randomized, double-blind, placeb

Combination bupropion-zonisamide facilitates rapid reduction in smoke exposure and prevents weight gain during switching to electronic nicotine delivery systems: A randomized clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: A pilot study suggested that the combination of bupropion (BUP) and zonisamide (ZON) could facilitate smoking reduction during switching to an electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS). This randomized controlled trial tested the hypothesis that BUP/ZON would produce greater smoking reduction than BUP alone or placebo (PLAC). METHODS: Adults who smoked cigarettes, but were not seeking cessation treatment, were asked to switch to ENDS provided during study Weeks 1-12. Participants were randomized to receive BUP/ZON, BUP, or PLAC (N = 60 per group) during Weeks 2-8. Assessments i

Self-reported smoking status and exhaled carbon monoxide in secondary preventive follow-up after coronary heart events: Do our patients tell the truth?

INTRODUCTION: Smoking cessation reduces the risk of myocardial infarctions (MI) and death in patients with coronary heart disease. Smoking status is frequently assessed based on self-report. The aims of this study were to compare self-reported and objectively measured (exhaled carbon monoxide [eCO]) smoking status after MI, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), and to assess whether assumed wrongly declared smoking cessation was associated to poorer achievement of other treatment targets for secondary prevention. METHODS: This study was a sub-an
