BACKGROUND: Children with intellectual disability face challenges to practicing social-communication skills, which may lead to detrimental consequences affecting their academic and social life. This study assesses the effect of video modelling in combination with least-to-most prompting and reinforcement on the acquisition and maintenance of the following social-communication skills: seeking instructions' elaboration, responding to corrective feedback and providing help.
METHODS: A multiple-probe across-behaviours design was utilised involving three children, aged 12-13, with intellectual dis

Objective: Social network analysis offers a high-resolution framework for understanding social influences on alcohol use, but full-length assessments confer significant burden, giving rise to brief measures. However, few studies have empirically compared brief and full-length assessments. To address this, the present study examined the internal and external validity of both brief and full egocentric social network assessments and their ability to capture weak social ties. Method: In 405 adults (57.5% female) with alcohol use disorder, a full egocentric social network assessment estimated drink

Short-form video platforms have rapidly become a dominant mode of digital engagement, yet existing measures of user motivation have largely been adapted from broader social media or smartphone instruments rather than designed for the distinctive affordances of short-form video. The present research developed and validated the Multidimensional Short-Form Video Use Motivation Scale across two studies of frequent users (total N = 1728) aged 19-40. An initial item pool was generated through literature reviews and focus group interviews, followed by content validity evaluation. In Study 1 (n = 719)

The current study describes the validation of a new cognitive assessment measure for social phobia, entitled the Appraisal of Social Concerns (ASC). Item content is relevant to a range of social situations. The ASC can be used to tailor interventions to patients' idiosyncratic concerns. Data are presented from both clinical (n = 71) and non-clinical (n = 550) samples. Preliminary data indicate that the ASC has good internal consistency and test-retest reliability. The construct validity of the ASC is comparable to that of well-established measures in use with social phobics. A strength of the

Accurate assessment is crucial for determining appropriate therapeutic interventions for social anxiety and conducting sound clinical research. While self-report measures of social anxiety are widely used in both research and clinical settings, they have several drawbacks inherent to their textual nature. Here, we describe the development and initial validation of the Visual Social Anxiety Scale (VSAS), a novel picture-based self-report measure of social anxiety, based on the well-established widely-used Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS). Specifically, the 24 items of the LSAS were used as

BACKGROUND: Minimising childhood trauma in forensic settings can obscure assessment accuracy by producing false negatives. The Minimisation/Denial (MD) scale of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) is traditionally interpreted as an indicator of social desirability, however, response bias in correctional contexts is likely bidirectional. It remains unclear whether MD items distinguish social desirability from protective coping or culturally shaped disclosure practices, particularly in correctional settings.
OBJECTIVE: This research investigated the CTQ MD scale by analysing reporting beha

Although there has been a marked increase in interest in social cognition (SC) in recent years, psychometric data relating to many tasks used to measure its components remain limited in healthy populations with only five articles published to date. It is accordingly premature to speak of a consensus concerning the specific components, or best tests of the components, and possible cultural differences. The present study sought to partially fill that gap, examining the psychometric properties of a battery of SC tasks in a sample of 100 healthy adults aged 18-85 years old. Initially, nine tasks a

BACKGROUND: The Social Anxiety Questionnaire (SAQ) was designed to assess five dimensions of social anxiety as posited by the Clark and Wells' (1995; Clark, 2001) cognitive model.
METHODS: The development of the SAQ involved generation of an item pool, followed by a verification of content validity and the theorized factor structure (Study 1). The final version of the SAQ was then assessed for reliability, temporal stability (test re-test reliability), and construct, criterion-related, and contrasted-group validity (Study 2, 3, and 4).
RESULTS: Following a systematic process, the results pro

Predictive models are essential for advancing knowledge of brain disorders. High variation in study outcomes hampers progress. To address the validity of predictive models, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis on behavioural phenotypes of the knock-out rodent model for Fragile X syndrome according to the PRISMA reporting guidelines. In addition, factors accountable for the heterogeneity between findings were analyzed. The knock-out model showed good translational validity and replicability for hyperactivity, cognitive and seizure phenotypes. Despite low replicability, translation

The 12-item Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (IUS-12) is a widely used measure in anxiety disorders research and clinical practice, although recent research efforts have recommended the development of a briefer measure to reduce response burdens. The current study was designed to develop a short form of the IUS-12. We administered the IUS-12 to two samples (cross-sectional, n = 3952; longitudinal, n = 190) of Canadian Public Safety Personnel through an online self-report survey. Exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory (CFA) factor analyses assessed the factor structure of the IUS-12 and facilitated

OBJECTIVES: This study reports the development and validation of the first scale to measure perceived care stigma among unpaid (family and friends) caregivers of older adults based on a social stigma framework.
METHODS: Based on data from the Attitudes Towards Informal Caregiving (ATTIC) project collected in Germany in December 2023, a sample of 433 unpaid caregivers of older relatives or friends (65+ years) was questioned with an online survey. Supported by a group of informal caregivers, the Perceived Care Stigma Scale (PerCSS) was developed. The PerCSS was tested for content and concurrent

Many children with chronic health conditions encounter enduring difficulties in their peer interactions and friendships. This study aimed to create and validate scales derived from an observational coding system (i.e., Peer Interaction Macro-Coding System, or PIMS) in a sample of children with spina bifida and their peers. Participants were 106 target child-peer dyads who completed a battery of questionnaires and interviews and were videotaped performing 4 interaction tasks, which were then coded across multiple domains of social functioning. Five scales (i.e., Control, Prosocial Skills, Posit

Systems for subtyping individuals with social anxiety disorder have been the focus of much research attention as a means to improve assessment and treatment of the disorder. This article highlights recent revisions to social anxiety disorder (SAD) subtypes from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) to DSM-V, reviewing empirical evidence that served as the impetus for the revisions. Recent research examining the validity of the DSM-V system and alternative subtyping systems is reviewed. Overall, there appears to be greater empirical support for a dim

OBJECTIVES: Individuals who complain of halitosis experience psychological consequences that can lead to social, professional, and affective limitations. Research has identified social anxiety disorder (SAD) as the most common psychopathology associated to halitosis complaints. Combining these two lines of research, we sought to determine the validity of the Halitosis Consequences Inventory (ICH), a scale designed to assess the psychological consequences of halitosis complaints. We also investigated the relationship between these consequences and SAD.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants were

Spite occurs when someone harms another individual at a personal cost to themselves. Spite is studied by evolutionary biologists and personality psychologists, but little behavioral spite research exists. A social discounting task was modified to determine whether repeated choices to spite a disliked person would decrease with social distance and/or increase as loss amount for the other disliked person increased. In Experiment 1, more than 50% of participants made at least one spiteful choice, resulting in less hypothetical rewards for themselves. Spite rates generally decreased hyperbolically

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Of the three broad outcome domains of body functions and structures, activities, and participation (eg, engaging in valued social roles) outlined in the World Health Organization's (WHO) International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), it has been argued that participation is the most important to individuals, particularly those with chronic health problems. Yet, participation is not commonly measured in back pain research.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the construct validity of a modified 5-Item Pain Disability Index (PDI) scor

Background The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Milestones use has been formative and low-stakes to date, and transitioning to higher-stakes applications in a truly competency-based medical education (CBME) system requires extensive validity evidence. Surgical specialties, with their unique demands for procedural skills and operative experience, represent a critical context for evaluating the validity of Milestones. Objective To synthesize studies reporting validity evidence for the ACGME Milestones in surgical specialties. Methods This systematic review was conduct

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with challenges in social communication and restricted, repetitive behaviors. Early diagnosis is vital for effective interventions. In low- and middle-income countries like Iran, reliable screening tools for ASD are scarce. This study aims to translate, culturally adapt, and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the "First Year Inventory, version 2" (FYI) for use in Iran. The FYI was translated into Persian using the Watson and DuBay (2019) method. A panel of ten experts assessed its validity. Based on th

OBJECTIVES: Several measures have been used or developed to capture the health and well-being of caregivers, including the EQ Health and Well-being (EQ-HWB) and its short form, EQ-HWB-S. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties and construct validity of the EQ-HWB/EQ-HWB-S in a US caregiver population.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted involving 504 caregivers. Eligible participants were 18+ years old, provided unpaid care to a relative/friend aged 18+ in the past 6 months, and spent on average of at least 1 hour per week caregiving. Survey included the following
