Physiological and behavioral effects of tilt-induced body fluid shifts.

This paper addresses the "fluid shift theory" of space motion sickness. The primary purpose of our research was the development of procedures to assess individual differences in response to rostral body fluid shifts on earth. Experiment I examined inner ear fluid pressure changes during head-down tilt in intact human beings. Tilt produced reliable changes. Differences among subjects and between ears within the same subject were observed. Experiment II examined auditory threshold changes during tilt. Tilt elicited increased auditory thresholds, suggesting that sensory depression may result from

Diagnosis of multiple sclerosis: 2017 revisions of the McDonald criteria.

The 2010 McDonald criteria for the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis are widely used in research and clinical practice. Scientific advances in the past 7 years suggest that they might no longer provide the most up-to-date guidance for clinicians and researchers. The International Panel on Diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis reviewed the 2010 McDonald criteria and recommended revisions. The 2017 McDonald criteria continue to apply primarily to patients experiencing a typical clinically isolated syndrome, define what is needed to fulfil dissemination in time and space of lesions in the CNS, and stress

Flexible dispersion engineering in metasurface-based leaky-wave antennas: leveraging spatio-temporally modulated impedance surfaces.

This study aims to investigate dispersion engineering mechanisms within unilateral and bilateral metasurface-based leaky-wave antennas, presenting methodologies focused on space-time modulation of impedance boundary conditions. Utilizing the generalized framework based on the Floquet-wave expansion method, the research precisely investigates the effect of periodic space-time modulation on the dispersion characteristics of the leaky-wave antenna. The beam scanning mechanism has been investigated in the momentum and frequency domains. It is shown that by choosing the appropriate spatial-temporal

Exploration of a Novel Physicochemical Property Space for the Development of Antimalarial Drugs.

INTRODUCTION: Malaria remains a major global health burden, with rising resistance to artemisinin and most current therapies, alongside emerging parasite species and genetic mutations that undermine disease control efforts. Identifying drug candidates with favorable physicochemical profiles is crucial for improving success rates in antimalarial drug discovery. METHODS: A comprehensive dataset comprising 52 approved and clinical-stage antimalarial drugs and 1,708 antimalarial research compounds was compiled. Their physicochemical properties were analyzed to characterize distribution patterns a

Improvement of short straws for sperm cryopreservation: installing an air-permeable filter facilitates handling.

Saving space for sperm cryopreservation would aid mouse genetics research. We previously developed the ST (sperm freezing in ShorT STraw to reduce STorage space) method for cryopreserving mouse sperm in a smaller storage space than conventional methods. However, our ST method has two drawbacks: difficulties during freeze-thaw procedures and the potential risk of sperm loss during storage. Here, we refine ST, terming the new method improved ST (iST). In iST, the straw has an air-permeable filter and the straw container (2-ml cryotube) is endowed with air vents. As in our ST method, iST frozen-t

Carcinogenesis induced by space radiation: A systematic review.

The carcinogenic risk from space radiation has always been a health risk issue of great concern during space exploration. In recent years, a large number of cellular and animal experiments have demonstrated that space radiation, composed of high-energy protons and heavy ions, has shown obvious carcinogenicity. However, different from radiation on Earth, space radiation has the characteristics of high energy and low dose rate. It is rich in high-atom-number and high-energy particles and, as it is combined with other space environmental factors such as microgravity and a weak magnetic field, the

Additional flight delays and magnetospheric-ionospheric disturbances during solar storms.

Although the sun is really far away from us, some solar activities could still influence the performance and reliability of space-borne and ground-based technological systems on Earth. Those time-varying conditions in space caused by the sun are also called solar storm or space weather. It is known that aviation activities can be affected during solar storms, but the exact effects of space weather on aviation are still unclear. Especially how the flight delays, the top topic concerned by most people, will be affected by space weather has never been thoroughly researched. By analyzing huge amou

[Ocular counterrolling as an indicator of vestibular otolith function].

Space Motion Sickness (SMS) occurred in the first few days of space flight correlated with the vestibular function. As the main influence of weightlessness in space focused on the otolith receptors. The test of otolith function is of great importance. Although there are a lot of methods to test otolith function, at present ocular counterrolling is the only relative pure indicator of otolith function. It provide a valid method for predicting SMS susceptibility, it has great application prospect in the research of the SMS mechanism and the readaptability of vestibular function after space flight

Life-Space and Cognitive Decline in Older Adults in Different Social and Economic Contexts: Longitudinal Results from the IMIAS Study.

Psychosocial, socioeconomic and sociocultural aspects can influence cognitive function among community-dwelling older adults. Life-space restriction is potentially related to cognitive status. We examined the longitudinal association between life-space mobility and changes in cognitive function in community-dwelling older adults in different social settings of North and South America and Europe. We used data from 1486 participants of the International Mobility in Aging Study (IMIAS) conducted at five sites: Tirana (Albania), Natal (Brazil), Manizales (Colombia), Kingston and Saint-Hyacinthe (C

Gender-Based Violence Against Trans* Individuals: A Netnography of Mary Gregory's Experience in Powerlifting.

In the context of sport, a growing body of research has reported the prevalence of violence against athletes, including sexual, physical, and psychological violence and neglect, experienced by both women and men in sport. Preliminary research has reported that gender-diverse individuals, specifically transgender athletes, may have a greater vulnerability to experiences of violence in sport, but this remains an under-researched population. In addition to limited research specifically on violence experienced by transgender athletes in sport, there is also only emerging research on virtual violen

'They (researchers) don't have to justify their presence, why do we have to justify ours?': The political economy of community advisory boards in tuberculosis research.

Community Advisory Boards (CABs), adopted from the HIV response, have become the most institutionalised form of community engagement in tuberculosis (TB) research. However, little work has examined the historical-political processes shaping their development or how these dynamics influence community participation in TB research governance. This qualitative study draws on 28 semi-structured interviews with TB advocates, community engagement practitioners, and TB CABs representatives across countries and levels of global health governance. Using the metaphor of "space" drawn from participatory d

Nanobioreactor detection of space-associated hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell aging.

Human hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSPC) fitness declines following exposure to stressors that reduce survival, dormancy, telomere maintenance, and self-renewal, thereby accelerating aging. While previous National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) research revealed immune dysfunction in low-earth orbit (LEO), the impact of spaceflight on human HSPC aging had not been studied. To study HSPC aging, our NASA-supported Integrated Space Stem Cell Orbital Research (ISSCOR) team developed bone marrow niche nanobioreactors with lentiviral bicistronic fluorescent, ubiquitination-ba

Recent Progress in Space Physiology and Aging.

Astronauts coming back from long-term space missions present with different health problems potentially affecting mission performance, involving all functional systems and organs and closely resembling those found in the elderly. This review points out the most recent advances in the literature in areas of expertise in which specific research groups were particularly creative, and as they relate to aging and to possible benefits on Earth for disabled people. The update of new findings and approaches in space research refers especially to neuro-immuno-endocrine-metabolic interactions, optic ner

Interrater Reliability and Age-Based Normative Values for Radiographic Indices of the Ankle Syndesmosis in Children.

BACKGROUND: While recent research has investigated the normative values, discriminative capacity, and interrater reliability of radiographic indices for the evaluation of the syndesmosis in adults, no such data exist for children. The purposes of the present study were (1) to determine the interrater reliability of common radiographic measures of syndesmosis and deltoid ligament competency in children and (2) to establish age-based normative values. METHODS: A consecutive series of patient radiographs from a Level-I pediatric trauma center were identified and were used to create an age and se

Versatile spaceborne photonics with chalcogenide phase-change materials.

Recent growth in space systems has seen increasing capabilities packed into smaller and lighter Earth observation and deep space mission spacecraft. Phase-change materials (PCMs) are nonvolatile, reconfigurable, fast-switching, and have recently shown a high degree of space radiation tolerance, thereby making them an attractive materials platform for spaceborne photonics applications. They promise robust, lightweight, and energy-efficient reconfigurable optical systems whose functions can be dynamically defined on-demand and on-orbit to deliver enhanced science or mission support in harsh envi

To boldly go where no microRNAs have gone before: spaceflight impact on risk for small-for-gestational-age infants.

In the era of renewed space exploration, comprehending the effects of the space environment on human health, particularly for deep space missions, is crucial. While extensive research exists on the impacts of spaceflight, there is a gap regarding female reproductive risks. We hypothesize that space stressors could have enduring effects on female health, potentially increasing risks for future pregnancies upon return to Earth, particularly related to small-for-gestational-age (SGA) fetuses. To address this, we identify a shared microRNA (miRNA) signature between SGA and the space environment, c

Hyperbolic matrix factorization improves prediction of drug-target associations.

Past research in computational systems biology has focused more on the development and applications of advanced statistical and numerical optimization techniques and much less on understanding the geometry of the biological space. By representing biological entities as points in a low dimensional Euclidean space, state-of-the-art methods for drug-target interaction (DTI) prediction implicitly assume the flat geometry of the biological space. In contrast, recent theoretical studies suggest that biological systems exhibit tree-like topology with a high degree of clustering. As a consequence, emb
