Aging of the medial olivocochlear reflex and associations with speech perception.

The medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) modulates cochlear amplifier gain and is thought to facilitate the detection of signals in noise. High-resolution distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) were recorded in teens, young, middle-aged, and elderly adults at moderate levels using primary tones swept from 0.5 to 4 kHz with and without a contralateral acoustic stimulus (CAS) to elicit medial efferent activation. Aging effects on magnitude and phase of the 2f1-f2 DPOAE and on its components were examined, as was the link between speech-in-noise performance and MOCR strength. Results rev

A neural basis of speech-in-noise perception in older adults.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated a neural basis of speech-in-noise perception in older adults. Hearing loss, the third most common chronic condition in older adults, is most often manifested by difficulty understanding speech in background noise. This trouble with understanding speech in noise, which occurs even in individuals who have normal-hearing thresholds, may arise, in part, from age-related declines in central auditory processing of the temporal and spectral components of speech. We hypothesized that older adults with poorer speech-in-noise (SIN) perception demonstrate impairments in the sub

The perception of "sine-wave speech" by adults with developmental dyslexia.

Numerous studies have shown that, as a group, children or adults with developmental dyslexia perceive isolated syllables or words abnormally. Continuous speech containing reduced acoustic information also might prove perceptually difficult to such listeners. They might, however, exploit the intact syntactic and semantic features present in whole utterances, thereby compensating fully for impaired speech perception. "Sine-wave speech" sentences afford a test of these competing possibilities. The sentences contain only 4 frequency-modulated sine waves, lacking many acoustic cues present in natur

Effect of perceptive-auditory training on the classification of speech hypernasality.

PURPOSE: To analyze the effect of auditory-perceptual training by inexperienced speech-language pathologists in the classification of hypernasality in individuals with cleft lip and palate and compare their classification of hypernasality individually, with the gold standard evaluation, before and after this training. METHODS: Three inexperienced speech-language pathologists used a four-point scale to assess 24 high-pressure speech samples from individuals with cleft lip and palate, before and after auditory-perceptual training. The speech samples corresponded to six samples of each degree of

Hearing a voice in the noise: auditory hallucinations and speech perception.

BACKGROUND: It has recently been suggested that auditory hallucinations are the result of a criterion shift when deciding whether or not a meaningful signal has emerged. The approach proposes that a liberal criterion may result in increased false-positive identifications, without additional perceptual deficit. To test this hypothesis, we devised a speech discrimination task and used signal detection theory (SDT) to investigate the underlying cognitive mechanisms. METHOD: Schizophrenia patients with and without auditory hallucinations and a healthy control group completed a speech discriminati

Information in speech: observations on the perception of [s]-stop clusters.

A series of experiments is reported that investigated the pattern of acoustic information specifying place and manner of stop consonants in medial position after [s]. In both production and perception, information for stop place includes the spectrum of the fricative at offset, the duration of the silent closure interval, the spectral relationship between the frequency of the stop release burst and the following periodically excited formants, and the spectral and temporal characteristics of the first formant transition. Similarly, the information for stop manner includes the duration of silent

Speech-In-Noise Perception in Alzheimer's Disease and Primary Progressive Aphasia.

BACKGROUND: Understanding speech despite background noise is essential for everyday communication, but makes heavy neural processing demands. It is therefore potentially vulnerable to neurodegenerative diseases, particularly those led by communication deficits (primary progressive aphasia). However, how speech-in-noise perception is affected in these diseases is poorly understood. METHODS: Here we addressed this in 59 patients representing typical Alzheimer's disease and canonical logopenic, nonfluent/agrammatic and semantic variant syndromes of primary progressive aphasia, compared with 24 c

Effects of neural aging on speech perception in bilinguals vs. monolinguals.

This study examined the effects of aging and bilingualism on neural speech perception in Spanish-English (SE) bilinguals and American English (AE) monolinguals. As the population of bilingual older adults continues to grow, understanding how bilingual experience influences auditory processing across the lifespan has important theoretical and clinical implications. Electrophysiological measures, including mismatch negativity (MMN) and the sensory obligatory cortical responses (P1-N1-P2 complex), were used to assess early auditory encoding and automatic speech discrimination during passive perce

Spectral Resolution and Speech Perception in Cochlear Implanted School-Aged Children.

OBJECTIVE: Cochlear implantation of prelingually deaf infants provides auditory input sufficient to develop spoken language; however, outcomes remain variable. Inability to participate in speech perception testing limits testing device efficacy in young listeners. In postlingually implanted adults (aCI), speech perception correlates with spectral resolution an ability that relies independently on frequency resolution (FR) and spectral modulation sensitivity (SMS). The correlation of spectral resolution to speech perception is unknown in prelingually implanted children (cCI). In this study, FR

Attention reinforces human corticofugal system to aid speech perception in noise.

Perceiving speech-in-noise (SIN) demands precise neural coding between brainstem and cortical levels of the hearing system. Attentional processes can then select and prioritize task-relevant cues over competing background noise for successful speech perception. In animal models, brainstem-cortical interplay is achieved via descending corticofugal projections from cortex that shape midbrain responses to behaviorally-relevant sounds. Attentional engagement of corticofugal feedback may assist SIN understanding but has never been confirmed and remains highly controversial in humans. To resolve the

Effect of exceeding compliance voltage on speech perception in cochlear implants.

OBJECTIVES: In cochlear implants, the maximum current I (Amperes) that can be delivered on a cochlear implant electrode is determined by V = I * R, where V = compliance voltage (Volts) and R = electrode impedance (Ohms). Generally, electrode impedances are measured during each clinical visit and are used to set electrical stimulation parameters in cochlear implants. However, electrode impedances can rise during the course of cochlear implant use and lead to electrical stimulation voltage requirements exceeding the maximum compliance voltage of the medical device. Electric stimulation requireme

Delaying Cochlear Implantation Impacts Postoperative Speech Perception of Nontraditional Pediatric Candidates.

INTRODUCTION: As pediatric cochlear implant (CI) candidacy expands, children with greater degrees of residual hearing are receiving CIs. These nontraditional candidates have audiometric thresholds that meet adult manufacturer labeling but are better than current pediatric guidelines allow. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of delayed cochlear implantation on speech perception in nontraditional pediatric CI recipients. METHODS: Pediatric CI recipients with a history of progressive hearing loss and a preoperative 4-frequency pure-tone average of ≤75 dB HL at the time of impl

Categorical speech perception deficits distinguish language and reading impairments in children.

We examined categorical speech perception in school-age children with developmental dyslexia or Specific Language Impairment (SLI), compared to age-matched and younger controls. Stimuli consisted of synthetic speech tokens in which place of articulation varied from 'b' to 'd'. Children were tested on categorization, categorization in noise, and discrimination. Phonological awareness skills were also assessed to examine whether these correlated with speech perception measures. We observed similarly good baseline categorization rates across all groups; however, when noise was added, the SLI grou

Developmental dyslexia and discrimination in speech perception: a dynamic model study.

At the behavioral level one of the primary disturbances involved in congenital dyslexia concerns phonological processing. At the neuroarchitectural level autopsies have revealed ectopies, e.g., a reduced number of neurons in the upper layers of the cortex and an increased number in the lower ones. In dynamic models of interacting neuronal populations the behavioral level can be related to the neurophysiological level. In this study an attempt is made to do so at the cortical level. The first focus of this model study are the results of a Finnish experiment assessing geminate stop perception in

Speech perception with steeply sloping hearing loss: effects of frequency transposition.

Six adults with a very steeply sloping high-frequency hearing loss listened to monosyllabic words in several conditions. In the first condition, their ability to identify phonemes with a signal-to-noise ratio of 6 dB was measured. Results were similar to those of normally hearing subjects listening to the same material through low-pass filters having comparable cut-off frequencies. In the remaining two conditions, four of the hearing-impaired subjects, and a control group of five normally hearing subjects, listened to speech in quiet with and without frequency transposition. The transposition

Speech perception in perceivers with hearing loss: synergy of multiple modalities.

Although we would expect that the role of visible speech in multimodal speech perception would have the greatest relevance to individuals with hearing impairment, relatively few analytic studies have been done with these participants. Their adequate understanding of spoken language usually requires information from several modalities or other sources of information. The framework of the fuzzy logical model of perception (FLMP) is used to assess how individuals with hearing impairment evaluate and integrate multiple sources of information. Given this framework, a distinction can be made between

Perception-production relationship in children with phonological disorder during speech therapy.

PURPOSE: To compare and correlate accuracy in perception of others', self-perception, and speech production in children with phonological disorder during speech therapy. METHODS: Sixteen children participated in a phonological intervention program comprising four stages: perception of the therapist's speech (perception of others), perception of their own speech (self-perception), and target and probe word production. Performance in each stage was analyzed using percentage accuracy, followed by comparison and correlation analyses. RESULTS: Performance differed between perceptual skills and sp

Can language attrition be reversed: Evidence from speech perception and production.

Language attrition is the change of a first language (L1) when speakers are exposed to a different language. We examine attrition in the domain of phonetic and phonology by looking at how immersion into the L2 speaking environment influences speech perception and production. We also examine if it can be reversed. We asked 45 late Polish-English bilinguals immersed in the L1 environment and 45 late Polish-English bilinguals immersed long-term in L2 environment (migrants to the UK) to produce L1 words containing /p/ and /b/ - a contrast realised differently in the two languages. We also tested t
