Superinfection of hepatitis A virus in hepatocytes infected with hepatitis B virus.

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection is a major cause of acute hepatitis including acute liver failure. Hepatitis B infection (HBV) occurs worldwide, with the highest rates in Asian and African countries, and there are several reports that HAV infection may have a more severe clinical course in patients with chronic HBV infection. We previously demonstrated that Japanese miso extracts have inhibitory effects on HAV replication. In the present study, we examined the replication of HAV and HBV in a hepatocyte superinfection model and the inhibitory effects of Japanese miso extracts on both viruses.

[A case of lung paragonimiasis superinfection with hookworm presenting difficulty in discrimination].

A 40-year-old woman, who was born in Thailand and moved to Japan 20 years previously, was admitted to our university hospital because of eosinophilia and abnormal chest radiography findings over a 6-month period. The chest CT showed multiple cavitary nodules in the subpleural area and a tubular structure that extended from each cavity to the pleura. Immunological examination revealed an elevation of antibody titers against Ancylostoma duodenale, Paragonimiasis miyazakii and Paragonimiasis westermanii based on an ELISA assay. In addition, hookworm eggs were found in the stool. We firstly admini

Isospora belli superinfection in a patient with eosinophilic gastroenteritis--a diagnostic challenge.

Isospora belli infection, characterized by peripheral blood eosinophilia, is often seen as an opportunistic infection in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It is also reported in patients with underlying lymphoproliferative disorders including lymphoma and leukemia. Eosinophil-associated gastrointestinal disorders (EGID), including eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EGE), is characterized by eosinophilic infiltration of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract with various GI symptoms. We report a case of a 50-year-old male who developed Isospora superinfection of the small bowel while

Pulmonary superinfection by trichomonads in the course of acute respiratory distress syndrome.

The finding of trichomonads in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) samples from an acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) patient, never previously reported, incited us to search for these parasites retrospectively in the BALF of patients with ARDS or related pathologies. Eighty-four consecutive BALF samples have been reviewed. Results were compared with data from clinical files of patients included in this study. Detection and identification of trichomonads were based on cytologic characteristics. Subsequently, immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization were performed in the last case

[IgM anti-HBc in the differential diagnosis of co- and HDV superinfection].

EIA was used to study the titers of IgM anti-HBc in 38 patients with chronic hepatitis B, 10 with acute viral hepatitis B and 18 patients with D-infection (6 with coinfection and 12 with D-superinfection) depending on the presence of HBe/anti-HBe. Chronic active hepatitis (CAH) was diagnosed in 18 patients, chronic persistent hepatitis (CPH) in 15, and the "Работает" HBsAg carriership in 5. The titers of IgM anti-HBc 1:100 were detectable in 14 out of the 18 patients with CAH and in 3 out of the 15 patients with CPH and correlated with the clinico-biochemical activity of the process and the pre

Recombinant transmissible vaccines will be intrinsically contained despite the ability to superinfect.

INTRODUCTION: Transmissible vaccines offer a novel approach to suppressing viruses in wildlife populations, with possible applications against viruses that infect humans as zoonoses - Lassa, Ebola, rabies. To ensure safety, current designs propose a recombinant vector platform in which the vector is isolated from the target wildlife population. Because using an endemic vector creates the potential for preexisting immunity to block vaccine transmission, these designs focus on vector viruses capable of superinfection, spreading throughout the host population following vaccination of few individu

Management of two circulations in a COVID-19 patient with secondary superinfection.

Optimal oxygenation in the intensive care unit requires adequate pulmonary gas exchange, oxygen-carrying capacity in the form of hemoglobin, sufficient delivery of oxygenated hemoglobin to the tissue, and an appropriate tissue oxygen demand. In this Case Study in Physiology, we describe a patient with COVID-19 whose pulmonary gas exchange and oxygen delivery were severely compromised by COVID-19 pneumonia requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support. His clinical course was complicated by a secondary superinfection with staphylococcus aureus and sepsis. This case study is provi

The incidence of Mucormycosis superinfection: A challenge to current Covid-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVE: Spinal tuberculosis, though destructive, can be cured in many patients by chemotherapy, though surgery is often necessary for decompression and deformity correction. Our aim of this study was to investigate the clinical efficacy of posterior debridement joint graft fixation therapy for lumbar vertebral fractures in patients with spinal tuberculosis with a compression fracture. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We prospectively included 48 patients diagnosed with spinal tuberculosis and lumbar compression fracture in our hospital from June 2010 to June 2013. The patients were randomly divided i

Ovarian Endometrioma Superinfected With Salmonella: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

We present the case of a 28-year-old woman with Salmonella serovar Schwarzengrund gastroenteritis acquired during foreign travel. Her case was complicated by superinfection of a pre-existing ovarian endometrioma with a quinolone-resistant organism; the resultant ovarian abscess ultimately required surgical removal for resolution. We review the key features of this case and the previous literature on Salmonella ovarian abscess. This report highlights (1) the potential for metastatic spread of Salmonella to the ovary in women with pre-existing cysts or endometriomas and (2) the increasing worldw

Positive Contribution of Adjuvanted Influenza Vaccines to the Resolution of Bacterial Superinfections.

BACKGROUND: Most preclinical studies assess vaccine effectiveness in single-pathogen infection models. This is unrealistic given that humans are continuously exposed to different commensals and pathogens in sequential and mixed infections. Accordingly, complications from secondary bacterial infection are a leading cause of influenza-associated morbidity and mortality. New vaccination strategies are needed to control infections on simultaneous fronts. METHODS: We compared different anti-influenza vaccines for their protective potential in a model of viral infection with bacterial superinfectio

Bacterial heterogeneity is a requirement for host superinfection by the Lyme disease spirochete.

In nature, mixed Borrelia burgdorferi infections are common and possibly can be acquired by either superinfection or coinfection. Superinfection by heterologous B. burgdorferi strains has been established experimentally, although the ability of homologous B. burgdorferi clones to superinfect a host has not been studied in detail. Information regarding any potential immune barriers to secondary infection also currently is unavailable. In the present study, the ability to superinfect various mouse models by homologous wild-type clones was examined and compared to superinfection by heterologous s

Increased susceptibility to bacterial superinfection as a consequence of innate antiviral responses.

The reason why severe localized or systemic virus infections enhance and aggravate bacterial superinfection is poorly understood. Here we show that virus-induced IFN type I caused apoptosis in bone marrow granulocytes, drastically reduced granulocyte infiltrates at the site of bacterial superinfection, caused up to 1,000-fold higher bacterial titers in solid organs, and increased disease susceptibility. The finding that the innate antiviral immune response reduces the antibacterial granulocyte defense offers an explanation for enhanced susceptibility to bacterial superinfection during viral di

Exacerbation of Chlamydophila psittaci pathogenicity in turkeys superinfected by Escherichia coli.

Both Chlamydophila psittaci and Escherichia coli infections are highly prevalent in Belgian turkeys and therefore they both might contribute to the respiratory disease complex observed in turkeys. C. psittaci can infect turkeys within the first week of age, even in the presence of maternal antibodies. However, the first C. psittaci outbreaks occur mostly at the age of 3 to 6 weeks, the period when also E. coli infections appear on the farms. Therefore, we examined in this study the pathogenicity of an E. coli superinfection on C. psittaci predisposed turkeys. Turkeys were infected with C. psit

Hepatic hydatid cysts with superinfection in a non-endemic area in Taiwan.

Hepatic hydatid cysts are extremely rare in Taiwan. We report a case of complicated, multivesicular, hydatid cysts in the liver and a secondary infection with Klebsiella pneumoniae. The cysts were detected in an early stage by ultrasonography and computed tomography and treated successfully with radical resection.
