Force-Electric Nanotentacles of Tantalum Implant Accelerate Cellular Energy Metabolism/Crosstalk for Immunomodulation-Vascularized Bone Integration.

Current load-bearing bone implants primarily serve as static structural supports, still fall short of replicating the dynamic, spatiotemporal, and multifunctional coordination inherent in natural bone regeneration. Herein, we first develop a biomimetic force-electric responsive tantalum (Ta) implant with surface-nanostructured LiTaO3 (n- LiTaO3) via combining laser nanofabrication and Li+-induced in situ reaction, achieving favorable immunomodulation-mediated vascularized osseointegration under low-intensity pulsed ultrasound stimulation. The piezoelectric LiTaO3 nanotentacles convert ultrasou

Additively manufactured Tantalum-titanium alloys with optimized osteogenic and immunomodulatory properties for load-bearing orthopedic implants.

The Tantalum-Titanium (TaTi) alloys demonstrate significant potential as an orthopedic implant material. This study presents the development and comprehensive evaluation of novel additive manufactured TaTi alloys for orthopedic implant applications. Through a combination of materials engineering and biological validation, we designed pre-alloyed TaTi spherical powders with varying compositions (Ta25, Ta55, and Ta75) and fabricated dense and porous structures via selective laser melting (SLM). The SLM Ta55 alloy (Ti-55 wt %Ta) exhibited optimal mechanical properties, including a tensile strengt

Osteogenic differentiation of 3D-printed porous tantalum with nano-topographic modification for repairing craniofacial bone defects.

Introduction: Congenital or acquired bone defects in the oral and cranio-maxillofacial (OCMF) regions can seriously affect the normal function and facial appearance of patients, and cause great harm to their physical and mental health. To achieve good bone defect repair results, the prosthesis requires good osteogenic ability, appropriate porosity, and precise three-dimensional shape. Tantalum (Ta) has better mechanical properties, osteogenic ability, and microstructure compared to Ti6Al4V, and has become a potential alternative material for bone repair. The bones in the OCMF region have uniqu

Single-Level Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Interbody Fusion: A Comparison between Porous Tantalum and Polyetheretherketone Cages.

Background: Anterior cervical discectomy and interbody fusion (ACDF) may be performed with different kinds of stand-alone cages. Tantalum and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) are two of the most commonly used materials in this procedure. Few comparisons between different stand-alone implants for ACDF have been reported in the literature. Methods: We performed a comparison between patients who underwent ACDF with either a porous tantalum or a PEEK stand-alone cage, in two spine surgery units for single-level disc herniation. Clinical outcome [Neck Disability Index (NDI), Visual Analog Scale (VAS) fo

Total Knee Arthroplasty Using Cementless Porous Tantalum Monoblock Tibial Component: A Minimum 10-Year Follow-Up.

BACKGROUND: Cementless fixation in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) was introduced to improve the longevity of implants but has yet to be widely adopted because of reports of higher failure rates in some series. The cementless tantalum monoblock tibial component, in contrast, has shown successful short-term results, but long-term survivorship with this design is still lacking. The purpose of this study was to investigate the minimum 10-year clinical and radiographic results of the cementless tantalum monoblock tibial component in primary TKA. METHODS: From March 2002 to March 2005, 33 patients (

Mechanochemically reprogrammed porous tantalum with synergistic antibacterial and osteogenic properties for the treatment of infectious bone defects.

Infection and poor osseointegration following orthopedic implantation remain significant challenges that can lead to complications, including prosthesis loosening, delayed fracture healing, and even implant failure. Porous tantalum is a game changer in the field of bone implants. In this study, we employed magnetron sputtering technology to modify ZnO particles on the surface of tantalum nanotubes (TaNTs) in porous tantalum, which were mechanochemically reprogrammed to enhance their properties. This approach enabled functionalization without altering the surface microstructure, resulting in th

Subtrochanteric femur fracture after core decompression and placement of a tantalum strut for osteonecrosis of the femoral head.

Multiple treatment options have been described to treat osteonecrosis of the femoral head, all with the goal of slowing or reversing the disease process and preventing the need for arthroplasty in a young patient population. Core decompression of the femoral head to allow revascularization is a commonly used technique that can now be supplemented by placement of the Osteonecrosis Intervention Implant (Zimmer, Warsaw, Ind). It consists of a tantalum strut that acts as a buttress for the subchondral bone of the femoral head. In this case, our patient underwent this procedure with subsequent subt

A Renal-Clearable Tantalum Contrast Agent Enables Precise CT Diagnosis and Subtyping of Acute Kidney Injury.

Precise diagnosis and subtyping of acute kidney injury (AKI) are crucial for clinical decision-making and prognosis. However, current in vivo imaging techniques lack the necessary precision, sensitivity, and resolution to meet this demand. Here, we report a renal-clearable, tantalum-rich carbon dot (Ta-rCD) contrast agent that enables high-performance computed tomography (CT) imaging for noninvasive visualization and differentiation of multiple AKI subtypes. The Ta-rCDs are synthesized via a simple and efficient air-assisted carbonization method, featuring ultrahigh Ta content (48%), gram-scal

Engineered tantalum sulfide nanosheets for effective acute liver injury treatment by regulating oxidative stress and inflammation.

INTRODUCTION: Tantalum sulfide (TaS2), a two-dimensional layered material, shows significant promise for treating acute liver injury (ALI) due to its exceptional biocompatibility and potent reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging capacity. However, the clinical translation of TaS2-based therapy remains limited by challenges in optimizing its stability, bioavailability, and particle size to match the liver's complex architecture. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the mechanisms by which serum albumin (SA)-modified TaS2 nanosheets (S-TaS2) modulate oxidative stress, apoptosis, and inflammati

A new expandable intracoronary tantalum (Strecker) stent: early experimental results and follow-up to twelve months.

A new radiopaque balloon expandable tantalum stent was tested in the coronary arteries of sheep. A total of 28 stents with a diameter of 2.0 to 3.8 mm were successfully deployed. The stent to coronary artery diameter ratio was 1.1-1.2:1. The animals were heparinized with 100 U/kg of heparin but did not receive antiplatelet drugs. Coronary angiography that was performed 10 minutes after stent implantation showed 100% patency with no side-branch occlusion. Four sheep died within 2 hours of stent implantation, and pathologic studies showed thrombosis of the smaller sized stents: 2 mm (n = 2), 2.8

Survival of tantalum-coated stems in primary hip arthroplasty during long term follow-up: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Porous tantalum offers excellent osteointegration and bone growth over the implant, in addition to a physiological load transfer with reduced bone resorption. However, there is limited literature on the survival of tantalum-coated femoral stems. The objective of this study is to evaluate the outcomes in terms of survival of a tantalum-coated stem in the context of primary total hip arthroplasty (THA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on all patients who underwent primary THA between 2006 and 2009 at a single center, where a tantalum-coated f
