We investigated the potential acid-base and nitrogenous waste excretion challenges created by voluntary feeding in freshwater rainbow trout, with particular focus on the possible occurrence of an alkaline tide (a metabolic alkalosis created by gastric HCl secretion during digestion). Fluorescent sensors for the detection of chemical explosives are in great demand. It is shown herein that the fluorescence of ZnL* (H2L=N,N'-phenylene-bis-(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylideneimine)) is quenched in solution by nitroaromatics and 2,3-dimethyl-2,3-dinitrobutane (DMNB), chemical signatures of explosives. Site-directed mutagenesis of amino acid residues proximate to the active site of the Ni-Fe hydrogenase of Desulfovibrio fructosovorans has been done. Glutathione S-transferase (GST) from the liver fluke Fasciola hepatica was assessed as a vaccine immunogen in cattle in a number of immunological adjuvants. Mutations in copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD) cause 25% of familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (FALS) cases. This paper examines one such mutant, H46R, which has no superoxide dismutase activity yet presumably retains the gain-of-function activity that leads to disease.
