The upper and lower tooth-bearing jaws of the filefish (Stephanolepis cirrhifer) were scanned using a micro-CT system in order to address the existing gaps between the traditional pictures of the morphology and histology. 2D tomograms, reconstructed 3D models and virtual dissection were employed to examine and evaluate the in situ geometry of tooth implantation and the mode of tooth attachment both separately and collectively. No distinct sockets comparable to those in mammals were evident, but shallow depressions were observed in the premaxillary and the dentary. The opening of the tooth pulp

INTRODUCTION: This study had 2 aims: (1) to assess whether the surgical exposure technique, the patient's age, and the grade of impaction are associated with ankylosis of the impacted canine; and (2) to investigate the effect of rapid palatal expansion on an impacted canine's automatic eruption.
METHODS: The sample for this prospective longitudinal study consisted of 118 orthodontic patients (72 female, 46 male) who were treated surgically and orthodontically by the first author (S.I.K.) over 18 years. The patients' ages at the beginning of therapy ranged from 11.2 to 46.1 years. They had 157

The exquisite preservation of maxillary and mandibular fragments of Seymouria has allowed us to examine for the first time in detail the dental anatomy and patterns of development in this stem amniote. The results obtained through histological examination show that Seymouria has pleurodont implantation with ankylosis of the tooth to the labial side of the jawbone. The dentary and maxillary teeth exhibit similar dental characteristics, such as the attachment bone (alveolar bone) and cementum rising above the jawbone on the base of the tooth, and smooth carinae extending lingually toward the too

Aesthetic considerations have influenced the management of dental maladies in varying degrees for many years. Even single tooth mal-alignment makes the patient to approach a dentist. Intentional replantation is a procedure in which an intentional tooth extraction is performed followed by reinsertion of the extracted tooth. Many authors agree that it should be reserved as the last resort to save a tooth after other procedures have failed or would likely to fail. The main reason of failure in replanted teeth is root resorption, specifically ankylosis or replacement resorption. Although the succe

Infraocclusion is a condition frequently associated with primary molars. The infraoccluded primary teeth remain in a fixed position, while the teeth adjacent to them continue to erupt, moving occlusally. It is generally accepted that the cause of the altered occlusal level is ankylosis of the affected tooth. This report describes a case in which a short course of interceptive treatment with a 2 x 4 fixed appliance resulted in resolution of the infrocclusion. Recreating space for a severely infraoccluded second deciduous molar resulted in 'eruption' of the tooth without the need for extraction.

BACKGROUND: The healing process of autotransplantation puts 2 different tissues in competition: the ligament on the root surface and the bone tissue of the alveolus. This study shows the effects of a protocol with 2 surgical stages, which promote ligament repair, inhibit adhesion between bone and dental root, and reduce the occurrence of the ankylosis-root resorption phenomenon.
METHODS: Forty-three patients, 33 to 73 years old, received 47 transplantations of mature teeth (including retained teeth) during a 5-year period. During the first surgical step, the transplanted tooth is extracted, m

Of the six recognized types of tooth luxation injuries, intrusion generally carries the most guarded long-term prognosis due to the high risk of complications, including root resorption, ankylosis, marginal bone loss, and pulp canal obliteration or necrosis. The degree of traumatic intrusion and stage of root development affects the outcome and treatment planning. This report describes the clinical history, oral and radiographic examination findings, and rationale for surgical extraction in 2 dogs and 1 cat with traumatic intrusion of a maxillary canine tooth.

The study of the connection between the teeth and the jaw is important for understanding the palaeobiology of vertebrates, but inconsistent terminology and incomplete sampling have made it difficult to assess the evolutionary significance of some of the related characters. Among archosauromorphs, tooth attachment in dinosaurs and crocodylians is nearly identical to that of mammals in featuring a ligamentous connection (gomphosis), whereas closely related forms appear to have teeth fused to the jaws (ankylosis), as in most other amniotes. Hence, studying tooth attachment of stem-archosaurs is p

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Intrusive luxation is a frequent injury in the primary dentition. Complications such as ankylosis or pulp necrosis (PN) and infection with periapical inflammation may affect the developing permanent tooth if not diagnosed and treated in time. The aim of this study was to report the risk of PN, pulp canal obliteration (PCO), infection-related resorption (IRR), ankylosis-related resorption (ARR) and premature tooth loss (PTL) in primary teeth following intrusive luxation, and to identify possible risk factors for PN and PTL.

Root resorption is a pathological process that can have many causes and various implications. The following case shows a patient with multiple advanced root resorptions. The clinical and radiological findings indicated replacement resorptions and cervical resorptions. Histological examination of one of the extracted teeth showed nonspecific findings with no evidence of replacement resorption. The cause of the resorption in this case remains unclear, although a possible connection with testosterone deficiency is being considered.

Dental trauma is one of the relatively common emergencies in clinical dental practice, with a high incidence rate, and the maxillary central incisors are the most frequently affected. This article reports a case of a 17-year-old female patient who suffered traumatic complete avulsion of teeth 11 and 21, with tooth 21 lost after avulsion. The prognosis for replantation was poor due to the absence of the buccal alveolar bone wall of tooth 11. Therefore, tooth 11 was treated with extracorporeal root canal therapy and then replanted into the alveolar socket of tooth 21, which had better conditions

The sequelae associated with anterior oral trauma during childhood growth may require a protracted period of clinical management to achieve an optimal foundation for future prosthetic therapy. This article presents two case examples of long-term ridge development and preservation in children after anterior dental and alveolar trauma. These two patients were managed for periods of 11 years, one from age 8 to 19 and the other from age 9 to 20, until they were old enough to receive implantsupported restorations. Two different treatment plans were prescribed based on whether or not the teeth in qu

Tooth resorption is a common sequela following injuries to or irritation of the periodontal ligament and/or tooth pulp. The course of tooth resorption involves an elaborate interaction among inflammatory cells, resorbing cells, and hard tissue structures. The key cells involved in resorption are of the classic type, which include osteoblasts and odontoclasts. Types of tooth resorption include internal resorption and external resorption. There are two types of internal resorption: root canal (internal) replacement resorption and internal inflammatory resorption. External resorption can be class

The process of healing periodontal ligaments (PDL) after transplantation has been widely examined, but the mechanism for preventing dentoalveolar ankylosis is still unclear. In this study, we focused on the role of mechanical stimuli in preventing ankylosis using an animal model of tooth transplantation assessed by histologic observation and evaluation of proliferating PDL cells. Five-week-old Sprague-Dawley male rats were divided into occluded and nonoccluded groups. The right maxillary first molars were replanted in both groups, and histologic observations were carried out after one or two w

This article reports a clinical case of a 10-year-old boy who sustained an avulsion of the maxillary right central incisor. The avulsed tooth was kept in adverse extraoral dry conditions for 26 hours from the moment of trauma until its replantation. Treatment guidelines for avulsed mature permanent teeth with closed apex were only partially followed. However, the clinical and radiographic findings after 10 years revealed acceptable functional outcome, in spite of ankylosis and root resorption of the replanted tooth, which was eventually treated cosmetically.
