Systematic review of the effect of insertion torque on locking screw performance.

PURPOSE: Locking plates are well established as a powerful plating concept, especially in low-density bone. Construct strength is dependent on the fixation between the screw head and the plate; however, the influence of variations in the torque used to engage the screw head into the plate hole is unclear. The aim of this study was to systematically review the effect of insertion torque on the performance of locking screws. METHODS: A systematic review was performed with electronic searches of four databases using free and MeSH search terms. Systematic evaluation and data extraction was perfor

Optimization of Exoskeleton Trajectory Toward Minimizing Human Joint Torques.

The reference trajectory, serving as the sole kinematic guidance, is crucial for exoskeleton robot systems. This study introduces a method for generating an optimal trajectory for lower-limb exoskeletons, aiming at reducing human power during walking. Initially, the human joint angles were computed from measured data by a neighborhood field optimization (NFO). Subsequently, inverse dynamic analysis including seven-link dynamic model of human-exoskeleton coupling and corresponding ground reaction forces optimization were constructed, which was surrogated by a back propagation neural network (BP

Tunable Spin and Orbital Torques in Cu-Based Magnetic Heterostructures.

Current-induced torques originating from earth-abundant 3d elements offer a promising avenue for low-cost and sustainable spintronic memory and logic applications. Recently, orbital currents─transverse orbital angular momentum flow in response to an electric field─have been in the spotlight since they allow current-induced torque generation from 3d transition metals. Here, we report a comprehensive study of the current-induced spin and orbital torques in Cu-based magnetic heterostructures. We show that high torque efficiencies can be achieved in engineered Ni80Fe20/Cu bilayers where Cu is natu

Suppression of Spin-Orbit Torque Switching by the Magnetic Proximity Effect.

Functional magnetic multilayers are particularly interesting for enabling many emerging spintronic physics, including spin-orbit torque (SOT), magnetic proximity effect (MPE), and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), among many others. A comprehension of these spintronic phenomena is vital for the development of advanced spintronic materials and devices. Here, we investigate the interplay between the MPE and the current-induced SOT switching in the perpendicularly magnetized Pt/[Co/Pd]K multilayers (with K being the number of repetitions). In particular, we find evidence of the MPE-induced

Emerging Spin-Orbit Torques in Low-Dimensional Dirac Materials.

We report a theoretical description of novel spin-orbit torque components emerging in two-dimensional Dirac materials with broken inversion symmetry. In contrast to usual metallic interfaces where fieldlike and dampinglike torque components are competing, we find that an intrinsic dampinglike torque which derives from all Fermi-sea electrons can be simultaneously enhanced along with the fieldlike component. Additionally, hitherto overlooked torque components unique to Dirac materials emerge from the coupling between spin and pseudospin angular momenta, leading to spin-pseudospin entanglement.

Voltage control of multiferroic magnon torque for reconfigurable logic-in-memory.

Magnons, bosonic quasiparticles carrying angular momentum, can flow through insulators for information transmission with minimal power dissipation. However, it remains challenging to develop a magnon-based logic due to the lack of efficient electrical manipulation of magnon transport. Here we show the electric excitation and control of multiferroic magnon modes in a spin-source/multiferroic/ferromagnet structure. We demonstrate that the ferroelectric polarization can electrically modulate the magnon-mediated spin-orbit torque by controlling the non-collinear antiferromagnetic structure in mult

Enhancement of Out-of-Plane Spin-Orbit Torque by Interfacial Modification.

Spin-orbit torque (SOT)-induced switching of perpendicular magnetization in the absence of magnetic field is crucial for the application of SOT-based spintronic devices. Recent works have demonstrated that the low-symmetry crystal structure in CuPt/CoPt can give rise to an out-of-plane (OOP) spin torque and lead to deterministic magnetization switching without an external field. However, it is essential to improve OOP effective field for the efficient switching. In this work, the impact of interface oxidation on the generation of OOP effective field in a CuPt/ferromagnet heterostructure is sys

Spin transfer torques due to the bulk states of topological insulators.

Spin torques at topological insulator (TI)/ferromagnet interfaces have received considerable attention in recent years with a view towards achieving full electrical manipulation of magnetic degrees of freedom. The most important question in this field concerns the relative contributions of bulk and surface states to the spin torque, a matter that remains incompletely understood. Whereas the surface state contribution has been extensively studied, the contribution due to the bulk states has received comparatively little attention. Here we study spin torques due to TI bulk states and show that:

Muscle architecture and torque production in stroke survivors: an observational study.

OBJECTIVE: Spasticity poststroke leads to muscle weakness and soft tissue contracture, however, it is not clear how muscle properties change due this motor neural disorder. The purpose was to compare medial gastrocnemius muscle architecture and mechanical properties of the plantarflexor muscles between stroke survivors with spasticity and healthy subjects. METHODS: The study included 15 stroke survivors with ankle spasticity and 15 healthy subjects. An isokinetic dynamometer was used for the evaluation of maximal isometric plantarflexor torque and images of the medial gastrocnemius muscle wer

Molecular detection of Torque teno virus in different breeds of swine.

BACKGROUND: Torque teno virus (TTV), of the Anelloviridae family, Iotatorquevirus genus, is a non-enveloped, single-stranded, and negative sense DNA (ssDNA) virus infecting human and many domestic animals including swines. Very little information is known about the investigations of TTV prevalence in different swine breeds so far. METHODS: In this study, 208 serum samples collected from seven swine breeds (Rongchang pig, Chenghua pig, Zibet pig, Wild boar, Duroc, Landrace, Large Yorkshire) from two independent farms were detected to determine the prevalence of two swine TTV genogroups, TTV1 a

Energy-efficient field-free switching by orbital torque and spin-reorientation.

Spin-orbit torque has emerged as a leading strategy for low-power magnetisation switching in modern spintronics. To date, most efforts have focused on boosting spin currents via the spin Hall effect, exploiting only the electron's spin while largely ignoring its orbital angular momentum. Meanwhile, deterministic switching of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy layers typically requires an external in-plane field to break inversion symmetry, adding power overhead and hindering large-scale deployment. Here, we demonstrate energy-efficient field-free magnetisation switching enabled by spin reorient

Irreversible mechanical weakening of amyloid-β K16 mutants via electrostatic torque.

BACKGROUND: Amyloid-beta (Aβ) fibrils act as the structural core of Alzheimer's disease pathology and maintain exceptional mechanical stability through dense β-sheet networks. However, the molecular mechanisms through which external physical stimuli disrupt these robust scaffolds remain poorly understood, particularly the residue-specific responses. METHODS: Here, we systematically evaluated the structural collapse and mechanical attenuation of Aβ fibrils and their K16 mutants, including the charge-reversal K16D and bulky K16W, under a 1.0 V/nm electric field (EF) using molecular dynamics (MD

Profile and Dynamics of Antiferromagnetic Domain Walls under Spin-Orbit Torque.

Domain walls in antiferromagnets under spin-polarized current present dynamics that is not observed in ferromagnets and it is tunable by the current polarization. Propagating walls are obtained for an in-plane polarization and precessional dynamics is obtained for perpendicular polarization. We obtain the wall velocity by a perturbation method for low velocities, and the wall profile is found to lack a definite parity by perturbation and asymptotic methods. Oscillatory motion of domain walls is obtained for spin polarization that has both perpendicular and in-plane components, and it is found

Prior Infection with Torque Teno Virus Mitigates Influenza Pathology in Mice.

Respiratory infections caused by influenza viruses are frequently associated with coinfection by other infectious agents. Torque teno viruses (TTVs) are small DNA viruses that can function as opportunistic pathogens and are epidemiologically linked to influenza viruses as well as a broad spectrum of infectious and immune-mediated diseases. Among TTVs, swine torque teno viruses (TTSuVs) are unique in that they have been shown to act as primary pathogens. With the long-term objective of developing experimental tools to better understand inter-viral interactions, this study aimed to optimize a mu

Downhill running differentially reduces stimulated contraction torque in human quadriceps muscles.

Unaccustomed exercise can lead to focal myofiber damage and substantial reductions in maximal joint torque, ranging from 20% to 50%. However, the uniformity of strength loss across individual muscles within agonist muscle groups remains unclear. The primary aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that individual quadriceps muscles (QMs) experience differential strength loss and soreness following downhill running (DHR). Fifteen healthy, sedentary, or recreationally active male subjects aged 18-35 engaged in either DHR on a treadmill for 60 min (n = 8) or level treadmill walking for 30 min

Controlling Magnetization in Ferromagnetic Semiconductors by Current-Induced Spin-Orbit Torque.

In this paper, we review our work on the manipulation of magnetization in ferromagnetic semiconductors (FMSs) using electric-current-induced spin-orbit torque (SOT). Our review focuses on FMS layers from the (Ga,Mn)As zinc-blende family grown by molecular beam epitaxy. We describe the processes used to obtain spin polarization of the current that is required to achieve SOT, and we briefly discuss methods of specimen preparation and of measuring the state of magnetization. Using specific examples, we then discuss experiments for switching the magnetization in FMS layers with either out-of-plane

Fluctuation-Mediated Spin-Orbit Torque Enhancement in the Noncollinear Antiferromagnet Mn3Ni0.35Cu0.65N.

We report strong spin-orbit torques (SOTs) generated by noncollinear antiferromagnets Mn3Ni0.35Cu0.65N, over a wide temperature range. The SOT efficiency peaks up to 0.3 at the Néel temperature (TN), substantially higher than that of commonly studied nonmagnets, such as Pt. The sign and magnitude of the SOTs measured in our experiments are corroborated by density functional theory, confirming the dominance of the orbital Hall effect over the spin Hall effect in the nonmagnetic phase above TN. In contrast, the strong temperature-dependent SOTs observed around and below TN can be explained by re

Age-Related Impact in Illusory Torque Cues Induced by Asymmetric Vibrations.

Illusory pulling sensations in the translational or rotational direction are induced by asymmetric vibrations applied to the fingertips. Although previous studies have discussed the involvement of mechanoreceptors associated with skin deformation and spatial processing in the parietal association cortex in the generation of illusory cues, the precise mechanism underlying this phenomenon remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to indirectly estimate the contribution of mechanoreceptors to the perception of illusory pulling torque cues by examining the relationship between vibration thresholds
