The response of lymphocytes from patients with syphilis and normal subjects was studied in vitro by using phytohemagglutinin (PHA), pokeweed mitogen (PWM), streptolysin O (SLO), and a preparation of Treponema refringens. Normal lymphocytes exhibited a dose-response curve to treponemes. Although lymphocytes from patients with primary and secondary syphilis responded normally to PHA and PWM, their response to SLO was suppressed and they failed to show significant stimulation by treponemes. BACKGROUND: Many human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and syphilis co-infected patients are not diagnosed, which may evolve into asymptomatic neurosyphilis (ANS). We studied the occurrence of ANS an HIV-infected population.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples collected from patients co-infected with HIV and Treponema pallidum. Social-demographic and clinical-laboratory characteristics were studied.
RESULTS: Of the 348 patients infected with HIV, 33 (9.5%) had reagent treponemic and non-treponemic tests. CSF was collected from 19 asymptomatic patients.

Between 2010 and 2014, we obtained swab specimens to detect Treponema pallidum, with PCR assays, from the oral cavities of 240 patients with 267 episodes of syphilis who reported engaging in unprotected sex practices. The detected treponemal DNA was subjected to genotyping.
