Voice disorder in cystic fibrosis patients.

Cystic fibrosis is a common autosomal recessive disorder with drastic respiratory symptoms, including shortness of breath and chronic cough. While most of cystic fibrosis treatment is dedicated to mitigating the effects of respiratory dysfunction, the potential effects of this disease on vocal parameters have not been systematically studied. We hypothesized that cystic fibrosis patients, given their characteristic respiratory disorders, would also present dysphonic symptoms. Given that voice disorders can severely impair quality of life, the identification of a potential cystic fibrosis-relate

Efficacy of videostroboscopy in the diagnosis of voice disorders.

While videostrobolaryngoscopy is not a new technique, its acceptance as a routine part of the voice evaluation has not been as forthcoming. Many are in agreement that the rigid fiberoptic telescopes in combination with standard VHS equipment provide a clear, magnified image that can be recorded and used for pretreatment and post-treatment comparisons, documentation, teaching, and research. Yet, some skepticism persists with regard to the ability of videolaryngoscopy and/or videostrobolaryngoscopy in changing the diagnosis and treatment outcome of patients with voice disorders as compared to in

Voice disorder in systemic lupus erythematosus.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic disease characterized by progressive tissue damage. In recent decades, novel treatments have greatly extended the life span of SLE patients. This creates a high demand for identifying the overarching symptoms associated with SLE and developing therapies that improve their life quality under chronic care. We hypothesized that SLE patients would present dysphonic symptoms. Given that voice disorders can reduce life quality, identifying a potential SLE-related dysphonia could be relevant for the appraisal and management of this disease. We measured

Psychological processes in psychogenic voice disorder.

Using Freud's hysterical conversion model as a basis for reviewing the psychological features in psychogenic voice disorder, this paper describes research findings which show that individuals with this condition are not usually suffering from severe psychopathology but tend to be women who are experiencing high levels of stress (commonly associated with interpersonal relationship conflicts, low self-esteem, the burden of responsibility and feelings of powerlessness), and have above-average musculoskeletal tension as well as difficulties in voicing their feelings or views. The review indicates

Implementation of Eclectic Voice Therapy Program via Telepractice in Hyperfunctional Voice Disorders: A Preliminary Efficacy Study.

PURPOSE: Hyperfunctional voice disorder (HFVD) has a multifaceted origin. Individuals with HFVD work in professions that demand high vocal usage and are bound to work for longer hours with very inflexible work schedules. In consequence, it can be speculated that an eclectic voice therapy program that uses combinatory approaches delivered via telepractice could bring about better efficiency of voice in these individuals. Nevertheless, very less attempts have been made in these lines. Therefore, the present study aims to implement eclectic voice therapy via telepractice and examine the efficacy

[Voice therapy according to Smith. Comments on the accent method of treating voice and speech disorders].

The accent method (A.M.) is based on the myoelastic and aerodynamic phonatory theory. The aim of the respiration exercises is to establish a predominantly abdominal respiration. Following the exercises of accentuated phonatory pulsations, patients work on reading special texts designed to enable them to become aware of the accentuated or unaccentuated sections. The AM is based on a holistic understanding of the voice and of speech. Whilst the exercise of AM is linked to a physiological phenomenon, such as phonatory aerodynamics and muscular function, the method is to be understood as a therapy

[Phoniatric care for disorders of the professional singing voice].

In Germany, approximately 8% of the population uses their singing voice professionally or semi-professionally, while approximately 18% of children and young people sing in organised ensembles. Of all occupational groups, singers have the highest demands on vocal quality and performance, and even among semi-professionals, singing is often associated with high strain on the vocal apparatus. The requirements vary considerably, depending on whether the context is solo singing or singing in a choir, and they are also dependent on the chosen musical genre and the use of electroacoustic amplification
