Verbal and Visuospatial Working Memory Performance During the CO2 Challenge Model of Anxiety.

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety influences working memory performance, but the effects on clinical neuropsychological assessments of working memory are not well known. METHODS: We examined the effect of anxiety, induced using the 7.5% carbon dioxide model of anxiety on standardized clinical neuropsychological tests of working memory and executive function in a single-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, crossover within-subjects design. RESULTS: The CO2-challenge reduced spatial working memory performance and verbal working memory performance accuracy when task demands were high. The CO2-challenge incr

Behavioral Timing of Interictal Spikes, But Not Rate, Correlates with Impaired Working Memory Performance.

In temporal lobe epilepsy, interictal spikes (IS)-hyper-synchronous bursts of network activity-occur at high rates in between seizures. We sought to understand the influence of IS on working memory by recording hippocampal local field potentials from male epileptic mice while they performed a delayed alternation task. Interestingly, the rate of IS during behavior did not correlate with performance. Instead, we found that IS were correlated with worse performance when they were spatially non-restricted and occurred during running. In contrast, when IS were clustered at reward locations, animals

Altered Morphological Characteristics Associated With Spatial Working Memory Performance in Children With ADHD.

BACKGROUND: Spatial working memory (SWM) deficit is a common problem in attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADHD), often correlating with the severity of ADHD symptoms and academic difficulties. Although previous studies have broadly described abnormal brain structural changes in ADHD, the potential changes in brain morphology in children with ADHD with SWM dysfunction are still uncharacterized. This cross-sectional study was used to elucidate the brain morphological alterations associated with SWM performance in boys with ADHD. METHODS: Data for this investigation were retrieved f

Concordance of assessments of clients' mental and behavioral health with in vivo assessment of work performance.

BACKGROUND: Assessing functioning and disability among individuals with mental and behavioral health disorders has historically relied on deriving accurate psychiatric diagnoses and assessing symptoms. However, growing empirical evidence suggests that this approach is inadequate to determine real world performance, particularly with respect to work. OBJECTIVE: We examined a performance-based approach to the assessment of work functioning and its relationship to mental and behavioral health status. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted at two mental health programs. Trained employmen

Prediction of working memory performance in schizophrenia by plasma ratio of clozapine to N-desmethylclozapine.

OBJECTIVE: Clozapine's potent antagonism of muscarinic M1 receptors is thought to worsen working memory deficits associated with schizophrenia. In contrast, its major metabolite, N-desmethylclozapine (NDMC), is thought to enhance working memory via its M1 receptor agonist activity. The authors hypothesized that the ratio of serum clozapine and NDMC concentrations would be inversely associated with working memory performance in schizophrenia. METHOD: Thirty patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder who were receiving clozapine monotherapy at bedtime completed the MATRICS Consensu

Consolidation time affects performance and neural activity during visual working memory.

We tested the effects of variation of stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) on visual working memory (WM) performance across different load levels and the underlying brain activation patterns using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in 48 healthy participants. Participants were instructed to memorise arrays of coloured squares and had to perform a match/non-match judgement on a probe stimulus after a jittered delay. We presented visual pattern masks at four SOAs after the offset of the memory array (100 ms, 200 ms, 400 ms, and 800 ms). Memory performance decreased with increased load and s

Effect of histamine on muscimol-induced working memory deficits in radial maze performance.

We investigated the participation of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurons of the medial septal area in eight-arm radial maze performance in rats. The intra-septal injection of muscimol, a GABA(A) agonist, caused an increase in total error and working memory error. On the other hand, no significant effect was observed with reference memory error. Donepezil and tacrine (cholinesterase inhibitors) antagonized the muscimol-induced spatial memory deficits. Histidine (1500 mg/kg, i.p.) also improved the total error and working memory error induced by muscimol. At this dose, histidine caused a sign

Neural signatures of auditory distraction and cognitive demand during working memory performance.

Cognitive performance in real-world environments often requires maintaining working memory under simultaneous cognitive demand and environmental distraction. Although both factors have independently been associated with alterations in attention and executive control, their combined neural effects remain insufficiently understood. The present study investigated the influence of auditory distraction, time pressure, and their combination on working memory performance using a multidimensional electroencephalography (EEG) framework. Thirty healthy participants completed a working memory task under

Age of Onset, Brain Controllability, and Working Memory Performance in First-Episode Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: The onset-age of schizophrenia introduces considerable heterogeneity in cognitive functions such as working memory (WM) among patients. One of the key properties of the brain that varies with age-related development is the network-level controllability of brain state transitions. We tested the effect of onset-age on brain controllability to evaluate its impact on WM deficits in schizophrenia. STUDY DESIGN: We examined the average and modal controllability of the brain connectome in 85 first-episode early-onset schizophrenia (EOS), 62 younger healthy controls (yHC),

Increased frontoparietal activity related to lower performance in neuropsychological assessment of working memory.

Executive functions, including working memory, are typically assessed clinically with neuropsychological instruments. In contrast, computerized tasks are used to test these cognitive functions in laboratory human and animal studies. Little is known of how neural activity captured by laboratory tasks relates to ability measured by clinical instruments and, by extension, clinical diagnoses of pathological conditions. We therefore sought to determine what aspects of neural activity elicited in laboratory tasks are predictive of performance in neuropsychological instruments. We recorded neural act

Theta Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation Is Not Effective in Improving Working Memory Performance.

There is an extensive body of research showing a significant relationship between frontal midline theta activity in the 4- to 8-Hz range and working memory (WM) performance. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is recognized for inducing lasting changes in brain oscillatory activity. Across two experiments, we tested whether WM could be improved through tACS of dorsomedial PFC and ACC, by affecting executive control networks associated with frontal midline theta. In Experiment 1, after either a 20-min verum or sham stimulation applied to Fpz-CPz at 1 mA and 6 Hz, 31 participants

Diagnostic Performance of CCTA and CT-FFR for the Detection of CAD in TAVR Work-Up.

BACKGROUND: The work-up for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) currently uses computed tomography to evaluate the annulus diameter and peripheral vascular access plus invasive coronary angiography (ICA) to assess significant coronary artery disease (CAD). ICA might partially be redundant with the use of coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). Prior studies found an improvement of the diagnostic accuracy of CCTA with the use of computed tomography-derived fractional flow reserve (CT-FFR). OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic performance of CT-FFR f

Frontotemporal coordination predicts working memory performance and its local neural signatures.

Neurons in some sensory areas reflect the content of working memory (WM) in their spiking activity. However, this spiking activity is seldom related to behavioral performance. We studied the responses of inferotemporal (IT) neurons, which exhibit object-selective activity, along with Frontal Eye Field (FEF) neurons, which exhibit spatially selective activity, during the delay period of an object WM task. Unlike the spiking activity and local field potentials (LFPs) within these areas, which were poor predictors of behavioral performance, the phase-locking of IT spikes and LFPs with the beta ba
