The effect of an 810-nm diode laser on postoperative pain and tissue response after modified Widman flap surgery: a pilot study in humans.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this single-masked pilot clinical study is to compare the tissue response and postoperative pain after the use of a diode laser (810 nm) (DL) as an adjunct to modified Widman flap (MWF) surgery to that of MWF alone. METHODS: Thirteen patients with generalized severe chronic periodontitis completed the study. Control sites were randomly selected to receive an MWF and the contralateral test sites an MWF in conjunction with a DL. The study tooth/site was treated plus any additional teeth in the quadrant in which the site was located, if needed. Randomization was done u

Photodynamic therapy using intra-articular Photofrin for murine MRSA arthritis: biphasic light dose response for neutrophil-mediated antibacterial effect.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Bacterial arthritis does not respond well to antibiotics and moreover multidrug resistance is spreading. We previously tested photodynamic therapy (PDT) mediated by systemic Photofrin® in a mouse model of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) arthritis, but found that neutrophils were killed by PDT and therefore the infection was potentiated. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study used an intra-articular injection of Photofrin® and optimized the light dosimetry in order to maximize bacterial killing and minimize killing of host neutrophils

Long-term outcome of PDT for local failure after CRT or RT for oesophageal cancer.

BACKGROUND: The long-term local control and effect of photodynamic therapy (PDT) using talaporfin sodium and a diode laser (talaporfin PDT) on overall survival (OS) for local failure after chemoradiotherapy (CRT) for esophageal cancer are unknown. Here, we present a 5-year survival analysis for talaporfin PDT. METHODS: This was a prospective follow-up analysis of an open-label, multicenter, phase 2 study of local failure after CRT or radiotherapy in patients who received talaporfin PDT. The primary endpoint was the overall OS. The secondary endpoints were progression-free survival (PFS), loca

Refractory Ventricular Tachycardia in a Patient With a Left Ventricular Assist Device Successfully Treated With Stellate Ganglion Phototherapy.

Neuraxial modulation therapies, such as stellate ganglion block, thoracic epidural anaesthesia, and cardiac sympathetic denervation, are effective for ventricular arrhythmias. However, these treatments can increase the risk of bleeding and infection. In this case report, stellate ganglion phototherapy was safely and effectively performed for refractory ventricular tachycardias in a patient with a history of left ventricular assist device implantation. Stellate ganglion phototherapy may have the potential to treat refractory ventricular arrhythmias as an additive therapy or bridge therapy.

Comparing desferrioxamine and light fractionation enhancement of ALA-PpIX photodynamic therapy in skin cancer.

BACKGROUND: Aminolevulinic acid (ALA)-based photodynamic therapy (PDT) provides selective uptake and conversion of ALA into protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) in actinic keratosis and squamous cell carcinoma, yet large response variations in effect are common between individuals. The aim of this study was to compare pre-treatment strategies that increase the therapeutic effect, including fractionated light delivery during PDT (fPDT) and use of iron chelator desferrioxamine (DFO), separately and combined. METHODS: Optical measurements of fluorescence were used to quantify PpIX produced, and the total am

Light therapy and advanced wound care for a neuropathic plantar ulcer on a Charcot foot.

Light therapy is a relatively novel modality in wound care. I used a light-emitting diode (LED) and superluminous diode (SLD) to deliver low-intensity laser light as an adjunctive treatment to a patient with a chronic diabetic foot ulcer. Standard treatment of conservative sharp debridement, off-loading, bioburden management, and advanced dressings was delivered in a WOC clinic setting. This combination of therapies resulted in closure of the neuropathic plantar ulcer within 8 weeks.

Effect of low-level laser therapy on inflammatory mediator release during chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis: a randomized preliminary study.

Patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) are submitted to a conditioning regimen of high-dose chemotherapy, with or without radiation therapy, which usually results in oral ulcerations and mucosal barrier breakdown. Oral mucositis (OM) is a common and debilitating toxicity side effect of autologous and allogeneic HSCT. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on the severity of OM and inflammatory mediator (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, IL-10, TGF-β, metalloproteinases, and growth factors) levels in saliva and blood of HSCT patients. Noninvasive light emitting diode therapy: A novel approach for postinfarction ventricular arrhythmias and neuroimmune modulation.

BACKGROUND: Sympathetic neural activation plays a key role in the incidence and maintenance of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) induced ventricular arrhythmia (VA). Furthermore, previous studies showed that AMI might induce microglia and sympathetic activation and that microglial activation might contribute to sympathetic activation. Recently, studies showed that light emitting diode (LED) therapy might attenuate microglial activation. Therefore, we hypothesized that LED therapy might reduce AMI-induced VA by attenuating microglia and sympathetic activation. METHODS: Thirty anesthetized rats
