Association of violence with emergence of persecutory delusions in untreated schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Psychosis is considered an important risk factor for violence, but studies show inconsistent results. The mechanism through which psychotic disorders influence violence also remains uncertain. The authors investigated whether psychosis increased the risk of violent behavior among released prisoners and whether treatment reduced this risk. They also explored whether active symptoms of psychosis at the time of violent behavior explained associations between untreated psychosis and violence. METHOD: The U.K. Prisoner Cohort Study is a prospective longitudinal study of prisoners follow

Pedophilic sexual interests and psychopathy in child sexual abusers working with children.

Research has identified stable and dynamic characteristics in child sexual abusers working with children (CSA-W) that may distinguish them from other child sexual abusers (CSA). However, in previous research CSA-W have usually been included in the group of extra-familial CSA (CSA-E). Two hundred and forty-eight forensic-sexological reports about CSA conducted by the Federal Evaluation Centre for Violent and Sexual Offenders in the Austrian Prison System were evaluated retrospectively. One hundred and nineteen intra-familial CSA (CSA-I), 66 CSA-E, and 38 CSA-W were compared with regard to stati

Long-term evaluation of midface position after Le Fort III advancement: a 20-plus-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Patients with syndromic craniosynostosis and midface hypoplasia are often treated with Le Fort III advancement. The authors present four patients with extraordinarily long-term follow-up (in excess of 20 years). METHODS: An institutional review board-approved retrospective chart review was performed on all patients with syndromic craniofacial synostosis who underwent Le Fort III advancement. Patients with greater than 20 years of cephalometric and photographic records were identified. Lateral cephalograms were obtained preoperatively, immediately postoperatively, at 1-year follow-

Offender Characteristics and Behaviors in NonSexual Child Maltreatment.

Data on 552 child maltreatment cases in South Korea involving convictions, including child physical abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect, were analyzed in order to compare 259 offenses committed by male offenders with 293 offenses committed by female offenders. Relative to cases involving female offenders, male offenders both had a higher number of criminal convictions and were more likely to have previously abused their victims. By contrast, female offenders were more likely to have had financial difficulties, while their victims were significantly younger compared to male offenders. Male offe

Identity-based prosocial motivation protects detained youth against institutional infractions.

OBJECTIVES: Emerging theory suggests that prosocial identity motivation (PIM)-youth's drive to disassociate from antisocial lifestyles and forge conventional identities aligned with prosocial values-may be crucial for promoting desistance among justice-involved adolescents. Yet, standardized tools to assess this construct are lacking, as is evidence of its protective value against continued antisocial behavior. We derived a measure of PIM from the Youth Assessment and Screening Instrument and tested whether it protects detained youth from serious and violent institutional infractions-behaviors

Using theory-informed, arts-based research translation to change community attitudes towards people who inject drugs newly released from prison: A randomised controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Community attitudes contribute to social exclusion of people with incarceration and injecting drug use histories. Interventions that positively impact community attitudes can strengthen efforts to reduce recidivism and support positive outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the impact of such interventions on public perceptions towards people who inject drugs newly released from prison. STUDY DESIGN: Randomised controlled trial. METHOD: A narrative script on the theme of "exhaustion" was produced from an interview study of post-release experiences. Members of the public partic

One month follow-up outcomes of a transdermal alcohol concentration-based contingency management intervention to reduce heavy drinking among driving while intoxicated arrestees.

BACKGROUND: High rates of driving while intoxicated persist, and recidivism is common. Recently, we demonstrated that 8 weeks of transdermal alcohol concentration (TAC)-based contingency management (CM) reduced heavy drinking (≥5 [men] or ≥4 [women] standard drinks) in 145 DWI arrestees under pretrial supervision. Here, we report 1-month (postintervention) follow-up outcomes for a subgroup of participants who were not Mandated to wear transdermal alcohol monitors. METHODS: After the intervention, Non-Mandated participants (n = 100, 69%) returned for a 1-month follow-up visit and self-reported

Randomized Controlled Trial Testing an HIV/STI Prevention Intervention Among People Leaving Incarceration Who Were Assigned Male at Birth, Have Sex with Men and A Substance Use Disorder.

HIV disproportionately impacts minoritized individuals, particularly those of intersectional minoritized identities. Incarceration disproportionately impacts minoritized individuals as well, and increases HIV risk, in part due to its disruption to people's lives, social networks, and access to care. We developed MEPS, a 6-month intervention designed to holistically support HIV prevention in men who have sex with men and transgender women leaving incarceration. We tested MEPS in a 1:1 randomized controlled trial with 208 individuals. All participants received a needs assessment and personalized

Conversion of one-anastomosis gastric bypass to Roux-En-Y gastric bypass: mid-term results from the United Arab Emirates.

BACKGROUND: One-Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (OAGB) is becoming popular, but some patients may need to convert to Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB) due weight-related difficulties or postoperative complications. The data on conversions is currently limited to 30-day or short-term follow-up studies. As such, the objective of this study was to evaluate the indications and mid-term outcomes for OAGB conversions to RYGB at a tertiary referral center in the United Arab Emirates. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients who underwent conversion from OAGB to RYGB between February 2016

Challenges and Successes in Introducing Coronary CT Angiography in an Emergency Medicine-Run Observation Unit.

This study was designed to analyze the departmental changes in transitioning the Emergency Department (ED)-run Observation Medicine Unit's routine noninvasive cardiac evaluation from the traditional standard-of-care procedures to coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA).  While the routine use of CCTA for the evaluation of chest pain has been deemed feasible and safe, provider confidence appears apprehensive, and ordering patterns appear reluctant to change.  We conducted a retrospective analysis of data from two risk-matched cohorts of ED patients who presented with symptoms suggestive

Comparing perceptions of individuals who sexually offend against children versus adults.

OBJECTIVE: We examined how the age of the victim influences the public's risk assessment and punishment attitudes for individuals who have sexually offended and whether actuarial feedback influences these ratings. HYPOTHESES: (1) Risk ratings for child victim vignettes would be higher than ratings for adult victim vignettes. This effect would be driven by higher ratings for lower risk individuals. (2) Because of the increased stigma associated with individuals with child victim sexual abuse convictions, participants who rated this subgroup would be less likely than those who rated adult victi

The crime of luring a minor for contact sexual abuse: Exploration of demographic patterns & criminal records of convicted offenders.

BACKGROUND: Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a significant public health problem, with a small but important subset of crimes committed by strangers, often facilitated through luring. Understanding the characteristics of individuals who engage in luring is essential for developing effective prevention and intervention strategies. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the demographic characteristics and criminal histories of individuals convicted of luring a minor and to examine the types of crimes committed before and after conviction. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The study included all individuals

Impulsivity, trauma history, and interoceptive awareness contribute to completion of a criminal diversion substance use treatment program for women.

INTRODUCTION: In the US, women are one of the fastest-growing segments of the prison population and more than a quarter of women in state prison are incarcerated for drug offenses. Substance use criminal diversion programs can be effective. It may be beneficial to identify individuals who are most likely to complete the program versus terminate early as this can provide information regarding who may need additional or unique programming to improve the likelihood of successful program completion. Prior research investigating prediction of success in these programs has primarily focused on demog

Social ecological factors and medication treatment for opioid use disorder among justice-involved rural and urban persons: the Geographic variation in Addiction Treatment Experiences (GATE) longitudinal cohort study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Three medications are Food and Drug Administration approved for the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD); however, these medications are underused within prisons, which elevates the risk of relapse and overdose when persons with opioid use disorder (POUD) are released. Research is scant regarding the multilevel factors associated with POUDs' willingness to initiate medication treatment for opioid use disorder (MOUD) while in prison and their continued engagement in treatment after release. Furthermore, rural and urban populations have not been compared. The Geographic variation

Hospital variability in adoption of alcohol and drug screening in adult trauma patients.

BACKGROUND: Despite recommendations to screen all injured patients for substance use, single-center studies have reported underscreening. This study sought to determine if there was significant practice variability in adoption of alcohol and drug screening of injured patients among hospitals participating in the Trauma Quality Improvement Program. METHODS: This was a retrospective observational cross-sectional study of trauma patients 18 years or older in Trauma Quality Improvement Program 2017-2018. Hierarchical multivariable logistic regression modeled the odds of screening for alcohol and

Rare, but potentially risky, high individual increase of self-reported sexual arousal in men, who have committed sexual offenses against children, while being confronted with experimental sexual stimuli - a retrospective data analysis.

This data analysis was initiated to further understand the infrequent yet intense instances of sexual arousal and signs of decompensation that emerge after exposing men who have committed sexual offenses against children to experimental sexual stimuli. We analyzed retrospectively and exploratory data of a self-developed sexual arousal questionnaire ("Current-State-of-Emotions-Questionnaire", CSEQ) with the following objectives: (i) examine subjective sexual arousal changes elicited during confrontation with experimental sexual stimuli, (ii) analyze these sexual arousal changes at an individual

"I feel like marijuana is the only drug that wouldn't kill me": perceptions of cannabis use in previously incarcerated Black men who have sex with other men.

BACKGROUND: Fragmented state laws have impacted cannabis uptake and perceptions in the USA. Little research has explored the attitudes, beliefs, and social network influences of young Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) who have experienced incarceration and use cannabis. While problematic cannabis use is not well defined and understudied, scholars have found that a person's social network can mediate problematic substance use and reduce recidivism rates by providing both tangible and emotional support. This analysis examines how social networks contribute to cannabis perceptions and use am

Adverse Childhood Experiences in Trainees and Physicians With Professionalism Lapses: Implications for Medical Education and Remediation.

PURPOSE: Unprofessional behavior, which can include failure to engage, dishonest and/or disrespectful behavior, and poor self-awareness, can be demonstrated by medical trainees and practicing physicians. In the authors' experience, these types of behaviors are associated with exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Given this overlap, the authors studied the percentage of ACEs among trainees and physicians referred for fitness-for-duty evaluations and patterns between the types of ACEs experienced and the reason for referral. METHOD: A final sample of 123 cases of U.S. trainees and
