Characterizing Microbiota from Sjögren's Syndrome Patients.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the oral microbiota of Sjögren's syndrome (SS) with that of healthy subjects (HS). METHODS: Supragingival and subgingival biofilm samples were collected from the mesial-buccal tooth surfaces of SS patients (n = 57) and age- and sex-matched HS (n = 53). Unstimulated saliva and 8 oral tissue samples were taken using a buccal brush. Caries and periodontal measures were recorded. All supragingival samples and a subgroup of 24 SS and 28 HS subgingival samples, as well as 32 SS and 11 HS saliva and oral tissue samples, were analyzed for their content of 41 bacterial species us

Evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of dentifrices on human oral bacteria.

OBJECTIVE: In vitro testing of antimicrobial agents is an important tool in the testing hierarchy, and may provide interesting insights into their potential clinical efficacy. Agents with demonstrable in vitro antimicrobial activity may be effective against the same microorganisms in vivo, whereas agents without demonstrable in vitro antimicrobial activity are unlikely to exhibit in vivo antimicrobial activity. In addition, these methods may also be useful in screening antimicrobial agents in product formulations because such agents with both in vitro and in vivo activity may have reduced anti

Supragingival plaque may modify the effects of subgingival bacteria on attachment loss.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial interactions in response to local and systemic factors may explain important features of the pathogenesis of periodontal disease. This study evaluates the role of supragingival plaque level on the relationship between subgingival microorganisms and the risk of attachment loss. METHODS: The study population consisted of 386 white women aged 45 years and older who had at least seven teeth. Subgingival plaque samples were taken from the mesio-buccal surface of six maxillary and six mandibular teeth using paper point technique. The samples were pooled, and immunofluorescence

Microbiological Effects of Laser-Assisted Non-Surgical Treatment of Peri-Implantitis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Background: Peri-implantitis, a condition characterized by inflammation and progressive bone loss around dental implants, presents a significant challenge in contemporary dentistry. Conventional non-surgical treatments often fail to fully eliminate bacterial biofilms, particularly on complex implant surfaces. Laser therapies have emerged as potential adjuncts due to their antimicrobial and bio-modulatory properties. However, their microbiological effectiveness and suitability for individualized patient treatment planning remain unclear. Objective: Τhis study aims to systematically assess and s

Metagenomics as an Effective Diagnostic Approach for Exploring Oral Microbial Diversity and Dental Diseases: A Narrative Review.

AIM AND BACKGROUND: The oral cavity harbors a diverse microbiota that significantly influences oral health and disease. Conventional microbiological techniques have limitations in detecting the full range of microbial species, particularly those that are uncultivable. Metagenomics, through culture-independent, high-throughput sequencing methods, offers a comprehensive approach to studying oral microbial diversity. This narrative review aims to evaluate the role of metagenomics in exploring the oral microbiome and its association with dental diseases. METHODS: This review systematically synthe

Subgingival Microbial Profiles at Peri-Implant and Adjacent Tooth Sites: A Cross-Sectional Quantitative PCR Study.

Background Peri-implant diseases are primarily driven by microbial biofilm accumulation on the implant surface, leading to inflammatory destruction of the soft and hard tissues supporting dental implants, with progressive marginal bone loss and potential implant failure. Objectives: To analyze the subgingival microbial profiles of peri-implant sites and adjacent teeth in peri-implantitis and to assess the modifying effects of smoking and periodontal status. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 43 adults (mean age: 54.5 years) contributed 100 dental implants and 50 adjacent natural teeth. Im

Human Primary Epithelial Cells Acquire an Epithelial-Mesenchymal-Transition Phenotype during Long-Term Infection by the Oral Opportunistic Pathogen, Porphyromonas gingivalis.

Porphyromonas gingivalis is a host-adapted oral pathogen associated with chronic periodontitis that successfully survives and persists in the oral epithelium. Recent studies have positively correlated periodontitis with increased risk and severity of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Intriguingly, the presence of P. gingivalis enhances tumorigenic properties independently of periodontitis and has therefore been proposed as a potential etiological agent for OSCC. However, the initial host molecular changes induced by P. gingivalis infection which promote predisposition to cancerous transform

Microbiological response of localized sites with recurrent periodontitis in maintenance patients treated with tetracycline fibers.

BACKGROUND: Whether adjunctive tetracycline fibers can provide an additive effect to scaling and root planing in treating non-responsive sites in maintenance subjects is still controversial. Recolonization of the bacteria from untreated sites or from the extracrevicular region may explain the insignificant response to local therapy. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the microbiological response of sites treated with tetracycline fibers combined with scaling and root planing. METHODS: The study was conducted in a split-mouth design. Thirty patients on maintenance therapy having

Mucosal bacterial dysbiosis in patients with nodular lymphoid hyperplasia in the terminal ileum.

BACKGROUND: Nodular lymphoid hyperplasia (NLH) in the small intestine is a rare benign lesion characterized by multiple small nodules on the intestinal surface. Patients with terminal ileal NLH may experience long-term abdominal pain, diarrhea, and abdominal distension, among other symptoms. Supplementation with probiotics could mitigate these symptoms. NLH is linked to the immune system, and it may result from accumulation of plasma-cell precursors due to a maturational defect during the development of B lymphocytes. The intestinal microbiome plays an essential role in the immune system. Thus

Early-onset periodontitis associated with Down's syndrome--clinical interventional study.

Individuals with Down's syndrome (DS) have an increased prevalence of periodontal disease compared with otherwise normal, age-matched control groups and other mentally handicapped patients of similar age distribution. The exaggerated immune-inflammatory response of the tissues cannot be explained by poor oral hygiene alone and might be the result of an impaired cell-mediated and humoral immunity and a deficient phagocytic system. As far as the progression and severity of destruction, the oral manifestations of DS patients are consistent with the juvenile periodontitis (JP) disease pattern. The

Clinical, microbiological and immunological features associated with the treatment of active periodontosis lesions.

Clinical, microbiological and immunological factors were examined using data from a subject with periodontosis. The subject was monitored at bimonthly intervals for 26 months at 6 sites per tooth for redness, plaque, suppuration, bleeding on probing, pocket depth, and attachment level. Using attachment level measurements and the tolerance method of analysis, sites with active disease and control (inactive) sites of equal pocket depth were selected. Subgingival plaque samples were taken from these sites for predominant cultivable and dark field evaluation before, and 5 and 13 months after treat

No evidence of triclosan-resistant bacteria following long-term use of triclosan-containing toothpaste.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: There is a paucity of data in relation to the possible emergence of triclosan (TCS)-resistant bacteria following long-term exposure to TCS toothpaste. Therefore, this study investigated whether long-term continuous exposure to TCS in toothpaste selects for TCS-resistant bacteria within the oral biofilm. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Dental plaque samples were collected from 40 individuals during year 5 of a randomised controlled trial. Participants had been randomly assigned to use TCS (3000 μg/mL TCS) (n = 18) or placebo toothpaste (n = 22). Diluted plaque samples were plat

Efficacy of a novel antimicrobial peptide against periodontal pathogens in both planktonic and polymicrobial biofilm states.

UNLABELLED: Streptococcus gordonii, Fusobacterium nucleatum and Porphyromonas gingivalis represent the early, middle and late colonizers of the bacterial accretion in dental plaque biofilms. These sessile communities constitute a protected mode of growth that promotes survival in a hostile environment. This study describes a novel and unrecognized role for a synthetic cationic antimicrobial peptide, Nal-P-113, which inhibits and kills periodontal bacteria in planktonic state, inhibits the formation of biofilms and eradicates polymicrobial biofilms. Nal-P-113 is also stable in saliva, serum and

Prevalence of periodontopathic bacteria in aggressive periodontitis patients in a Chilean population.

BACKGROUND: Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans is considered a major etiologic agent of aggressive periodontitis (AgP). Other periodontopathic bacteria such as Porphyromonas gingivalis are also suspected of participating in aggressive periodontitis although the evidence to support this is controversial. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of eight periodontopathic bacteria in Chilean patients with AgP. METHODS: Subgingival plaque samples were collected from 36 aggressive, 30 localized, and six generalized periodontitis patients. Samples from 17 advanced chronic peri

Salivary blood group antigens and microbial flora.

OBJECTIVE: Secretor is an individual with ability to produce blood group reactive substances in the exocrine glands and to secrete these substances in the body fluids such as saliva. In saliva the blood reactive antigens are found primarily on mucins which exhibit microheterogenicity and different subtypes of these molecules. This study was done to find out if the salivary blood group antigens have any role in the adherence of certain selected microorganism in the oral cavity. METHODS: Unstimulated whole saliva and sub gingival plaque samples were collected from subjects with clinically healt
