INTRODUCTION: Mucormycosis is an opportunistic, fulminating fungal infection of the sino-nasal region. It tends to affect people with immune suppression. The hard palate is a rare site of the disease and few cases have been reported in the literature. This report discusses the nature of hard palate mucormycosis, with the aim of outlining possible explanations and reviewing associated characteristics.
METHOD: This was a prospective analysis of four cases of hard palate mucormycosis. The patients were referred from the medical department, with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. An aggressive treat

Though of critical importance, nonimmune host defense mechanisms against aspergillosis and mucormycosis are not completely understood. Prevention of these infections presumably requires control of either spore germination and/or hyphal growth by the host. The data suggest that the host provides an important barrier to infection by control of spore or conidia germination, the critical step involving conversion of the fungus to its tissue-invasive form. The mechanisms of host defense against A. fumigatus are not strictly dependent on inhibition of conidia germination. Rather, pulmonary defense a

The epidemiology of invasive fungal infections (IFIs) in immunocompromised individuals has changed over the last few decades, partially due to the increased use of antifungal agents to prevent IFIs. Although this strategy has resulted in an overall reduction in IFIs, a subset of patients develop breakthrough IFIs with substantial morbidity and mortality in this population. Here, we review the most significant risk factors for breakthrough IFIs in haematology patients, solid organ transplant recipients, and patients in the intensive care unit, focusing particularly on host factors, and highligh

The use of recombinant antigens has been shown to improve both the sensitivity and the standardization of the serological diagnosis of Farmer's lung disease (FLD). The aim of this study was to complete the panel of recombinant antigens available for FLD serodiagnosis with antigens of Lichtheimia corymbifera, known to be involved in FLD. L. corymbifera proteins were thus separated by 2D electrophoresis and subjected to western blotting with sera from 7 patients with FLD and 9 healthy exposed controls (HEC). FLD-associated immunoreactive proteins were identified by mass spectrometry based on a p

BACKGROUND: Zygomycosis (mucormycosis or phycomycosis) is the infection caused by zygomycetes (non partitioned mycelial fungi, usually saprophytes). All cases of zygomycosis diagnosed in the Hospital 12 de Octubre in Madrid, Spain, from 1976 to 1994 were reviewed.
METHODS: The underlying diseases of the patients, the factors favoring infection (alteration of the cutaneous barrier and administration of antimicrobians and corticosteroids) and the possible nosocomial origin of infection were analyzed.
RESULTS: Over this period of time, 16 cases of zygomycosis were diagnosed with different clini

BACKGROUND: Opportunistic fungal infections are rare, life-threatening conditions and are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised hosts. Our experience in the management of a case of combined mucormycosis and aspergillosis of the rhinocerebral region is presented.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The infection developed a few weeks after tooth extraction, massively involving facial structures. After diagnosis, the patient underwent prolonged combined systemic antifungal treatment. Once the local and general conditions had stabilized, an extensive surgical debridement was performed,

Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in haematological malignancy patients and hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients(1). Detection of IPA represents a formidable diagnostic challenge and, in the absence of a 'gold standard', relies on a combination of clinical data and microbiology and histopathology where feasible. Diagnosis of IPA must conform to the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Mycology Study Group (EORTC/MSG) consensus defining "proven", "proba

Presented here are the results of a retrospective analysis of all mucormycoses infections recorded at a tertiary hospital in Greece during the last 10 years. A total of 24 patients were identified, 15 male and 9 female, with ages ranging from 37 to 80 years. Twelve of the patients had soft tissue infections (2 with concomitant pulmonary infections), and 12 had rhinocerebral infections. Transmission could be traced in two cases; to nitroglycerin patches in one patient and to a lemon-tree-thorn scratch in the other. Among the 17 patients who underwent surgery, 11 survived. All seven patients on

Zygomycosis is a rapidly-progressive invasive fungal disease with high mortality rates. Mucor, Rhizopus, Rhizomucor and Absidia species classified in Mucorales order, are the main causative agents of zygomycosis. Uncontrolled diabetes, hematologic malignancies, long term corticosteroid use and immunosuppressive therapies are the main predisposing factors for mucormycosis. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the mucormycosis cases from Turkey published in national and international databases in the last 17 years by means of age, gender, co-morbidities, signs and symptoms, diagnostic methods, th

Mucormycosis (MCR) is frequently associated with diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperglycemia, as well as hematologic malignancies (HMs) and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). However, little is known about the effect of hyperglycemia on MCR outcomes in patients with HMs. We therefore conducted a retrospective cohort study of adult patients hospitalized with MCR and HM or HSCT (n = 103) at MD Anderson Cancer Center from April 2000 through to April 2020. Twenty-three patients (22%) had documented episodes of severe hyperglycemia. Sixty patients had >5 serum glucose measurements within 2

Mucormycoses are rare but emerging diseases with poor prognosis caused by ubiquitous fungi from the environment. In November 2008, our teaching hospital experienced three cutaneous mucormycosis due to Lichtheimia spp. (ex Absidia/Mycocladus) in the intensive care and orthopaedic units. Environmental and epidemiological investigations suggested a possible cross-transmission of L. ramosa between two patients in intensive care. This is the first report of possible person-to-person transmission of mucormycosis species. These cases show the ineffectiveness of hydro-alcoholic solutions against spore

In immunocompromised patients, symptoms and the pathogen spectrum of sinusitis are frequently atypical. If progressive loss of vision occurs, an infection of the anterior skull base or nasal sinuses should be considered. We report on four patients with orbit-associated symptoms. CT-imaging revealed bony defects in sinus borders to orbits or endocranium. In all the cases immediate surgical drainage was performed because complications following sinusitis were suspected. Histopathological diagnosis revealed two cases of aspergillosis and mucormycosis. The possibility of opportunistic infections b

BACKGROUND: Invasive fungal infections (IFIs) are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in paediatric haemato-oncology (PHO) patients. Empirical antifungal therapy in high-risk children must be informed by local epidemiological, species-level and antifungal-susceptibility data, yet contemporary Indian paediatric cohort data remain limited.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical, microbiological, therapeutic and outcome profile of probable and proven IFI in a tertiary care South Indian PHO unit over five years, and to benchmark the findings against contemporary international literature.

Pediatric patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) are at high risk for fungal infections, including Candida, Aspergillus, and Mucorales, necessitating the use of broad-spectrum antifungal agents such as posaconazole for prophylaxis and at times for treatment of invasive fungal infections. When first approved, posaconazole was limited to an immediate-release oral suspension, which exhibited unreliable absorption dependent on co-administration with high-fat meals. During HSCT, patients commonly have significant nausea, vomiting, and decreased enteral intake, making this for

Invasive fungal diseases (IFDs) remain a significant cause of morbidity and mortality among patients with hematological malignancies, especially those undergoing intensive chemotherapy or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). This text provides a comprehensive risk-adapted framework for antifungal prophylaxis, stratifying patients into high-, intermediate-, and low-risk categories. Mold-active prophylaxis, primarily with posaconazole, is recommended for high-risk patients such as those with acute myeloid leukemia during remission induction or those with grade III-IV graft-versus-host

Invasive mold infections (IMI) are among the most devastating complications following chemotherapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), with high mortality rates. Yet, the molecular basis for human susceptibility to invasive aspergillosis (IA) and mucormycosis remain poorly understood. Herein, we aimed to characterize the immune profile of individuals with hematological malignancies (n = 18) who developed IMI during the course of chemotherapy or HSCT, and compared it to that of hematological patients who had no evidence of invasive fungal infection (n = 16). First, we measured t
