Privacy-Preserving Head Pose Estimation System for Measuring Cervical Range of Motion.

Cervical range of motion (CROM) has been used in research and clinically for assessing cervical health. Gold-standard goniometers tend to be cumbersome. However, Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) or vision-based alternatives demand frequent calibration and/or costly hardware; moreover, the subject is aware of being measured and there is a risk of breaching privacy. In response, we have developed a non-contact HPNet system for head pose estimation (HPE) that can use a rear-facing camera to quantify CROM accurately. A Re-parameterized Visual Geometry Group (RepVGG)-D2se model is employed as the

Feasibility of transitioning to marker-less immobilisation using optical surface guidance in head and neck cancer treatment: a study at territory state cancer centre in a developing country.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: In countries such as India, where a large share of cancer patients undergoes head and neck radiotherapy, setups still rely primarily on laser alignment with surface markers on the mask. This study explores transitioning from conventional marker-based setup to markerless setups using optical surface guidance (SGRT) to determine if treatment accuracy can be maintained particularly in a territory state cancer centre setting where resources are limited. MATERIALS/METHODS: A prospective study of 80 head-and-neck cancer patients, randomized into two groups was performed: open-fa

Enlarged area of support and the mechanics of the hip joint and pelvis movements during gravidas walking.

BACKGROUND: The hip joint is a complex anatomic structure which provides both stability and mobility, and is involved in transferring the weight of the body. During pregnancy the increased mass of the female abdomen increasing the torque exerted by the upper body around the hip joints. AIM: We took a longitudinal perspective to explore the interactions between base of support size and kinematics of the hip joint throughout gait cycle in pregnant women referring it to the non-pregnant state of the same group. We were interested in how wide-step walking due to pregnancy would affect the hip joi

A Robust Method for Real Time Intraoperative 2D and Preoperative 3D X-Ray Image Registration Based on an Enhanced Swin Transformer Framework.

In image-guided surgery (IGS) practice, combining intraoperative 2D X-ray images with preoperative 3D X-ray images from computed tomography (CT) enables the rapid and accurate localization of lesions, which allows for a more minimally invasive and efficient surgery, and also reduces the risk of secondary injuries to nerves and vessels. Conventional optimization-based methods for 2D X-ray and 3D CT matching are limited in speed and precision due to non-convex optimization spaces and a constrained searching range. Recently, deep learning (DL) approaches have demonstrated remarkable proficiency i

Balance recovery and its link to vestibular agnosia in traumatic brain injury: a longitudinal behavioural and neuro-imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Vestibular dysfunction causing imbalance affects c. 80% of acute hospitalized traumatic brain injury (TBI) cases. Poor balance recovery is linked to worse return-to-work rates and reduced longevity. We previously showed that white matter network disruption, particularly of right inferior longitudinal fasciculus, mediates the overlap between imbalance and impaired vestibular perception of self-motion (i.e., vestibular agnosia) in acute hospitalized TBI. However, there are no prior reports tracking the acute-longitudinal trajectory of objectively measured vestibular function for hosp

Virtual clinical trial-based study for clinical evaluation of projection-reduced low-dose cone-beam CT for image guided radiotherapy.

PURPOSE: Repeated cone-beam CT (CBCT) scans for image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) increase the health risk of radiation-induced malignancies. Patient-enrolled studies to optimize scan protocols are inadequate. We proposed a virtual clinical trial-based approach to evaluate projection-reduced low-dose CBCT for IGRT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 71 patients were virtually enrolled with 26 head, 23 thorax and 22 pelvis scans. Projection numbers of full-dose CBCT scans were reduced to 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8 of the original to simulate low-dose scans. Contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) values in fat and

Objective Performance Indicators During Robotic Right Colectomy Differ According to Surgeon Skill.

INTRODUCTION: Surgeon assessment tools are subjective and nonscalable. Objective performance indicators (OPIs), machine learning-enabled metrics recorded during robotic surgery, offer objective insights into surgeon movements and robotic arm kinematics. In this study, we identified OPIs that significantly differed across expert (EX), intermediate (IM), and novice (NV) surgeons during robotic right colectomy. METHODS: Endoscopic videos were annotated to delineate 461 surgical steps across 25 robotic right colectomies. OPIs were compared among two EX, two IM, and eight NV surgeons during mesent

Exploratory analysis of evasion actions of powered two-wheeler conflicts at unsignalized intersection.

The study investigates the braking and steering evasions of powered two-wheelers (PTWs) during severe conflicts observed at an unsignalized intersection. Traffic conflicts were detected using a surrogate safety indicator called anticipated collision time (ACT). Then the peak-over-threshold approach was used to identify the severe conflicts and the evasive actions. Conflicts between right-turning PTWs and through-moving vehicles, through-moving PTWs crossing through-moving vehicles, and merging/diverging PTWs were analyzed using the minimum ACT (ACTmin), maximum deceleration rate (DRmax), maxim

Comparison of stability and outcomes of surgery-first bimaxillary surgery for skeletal class III deformity between unilateral and bilateral cleft lip and palate.

OBJECTIVES: Some adults with cleft lip and palate (CLP) require orthognathic surgery due to skeletal deformity. This prospective study aimed to (1) compare skeletal stability following bimaxillary surgery for correction of class III deformity between patients with unilateral CLP (UCLP) and bilateral CLP (BCLP), and (2) identify risk factors of stability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adults with CLP and skeletal class III deformities who underwent surgery-first bimaxillary surgery were divided into two groups according to cleft type: UCLP (n = 30) and BCLP (n = 30). Skeletal stability was assessed w

Oculomotor Deficits and Symptom Severity Are Associated With Poorer Dynamic Mobility in Chronic Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Oculomotor deficits, vestibular impairments, and persistent symptoms are common after a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI); however, the relationship between visual-vestibular deficits, symptom severity, and dynamic mobility tasks is unclear. Twenty-three individuals (mean age 55.7 ± 9.3 years) with persistent symptoms after mTBI, who were between 3 months to 2 years post-injury were compared with 23 age and sex-matched controls. Oculomotor deficits [depth perception, near-point convergence, baseline visual acuity (BLVA), perception time], vestibular deficits (dynamic visual acuity in the pitc

Estimating 3-dimensional liver motion using deep learning and 2-dimensional ultrasound images.

PURPOSE: The main purpose of this study is to construct a system to track the tumor position during radiofrequency ablation (RFA) treatment. Existing tumor tracking systems are designed to track a tumor in a two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound (US) image. As a result, the three-dimensional (3D) motion of the organs cannot be accommodated and the ablation area may be lost. In this study, we propose a method for estimating the 3D movement of the liver as a preliminary system for tumor tracking. Additionally, in current 3D movement estimation systems, the motion of different structures during RFA cou

A hierarchical machine learning classification approach for secondary task identification from observed driving behavior data.

According to NHTSA, more than 3477 people (including 551 non-occupants) were killed and 391,000 were injured due to distraction-related crashes in 2015. The distracted driving epidemic has long been under research to identify its impact on driving behavior. There have been a few attempts to detect drivers' engagement in secondary tasks from observed driving behavior. Yet, to the authors' knowledge, not much effort has been directed to identify the types of secondary tasks from driving behavior parameters. This study proposes a bi-level hierarchical classification methodology using machine lear

Quantitative Assessment of Orbital Implant Position--A Proof of Concept.

INTRODUCTION: In orbital reconstruction, the optimal location of a predefined implant can be planned preoperatively. Surgical results can be assessed intraoperatively or postoperatively. A novel method for quantifying orbital implant position is introduced. The method measures predictability of implant placement: transformation parameters between planned and resulting implant position are quantified. METHODS: The method was tested on 3 human specimen heads. Computed Tomography scans were acquired at baseline with intact orbits (t0), after creation of the defect (t1) and postoperatively after

Found in space: computer-assisted orthognathic alignment of a total face allograft in six degrees of freedom.

PURPOSE: Full facial osteomyocutaneous transplantation requires correct 3-dimensional (3D) alignment of donor osseous structures to a new cranial base with minimal reference points and 6 degrees of potential movement. We investigated whether computer-assisted design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) could enable accurate placement of the facial skeleton. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective single-cohort study of Le Fort III-based maxillary-mandibular segment allotransplantation was performed in 5 cadaver pairs and 1 clinical pair. Cognitive impairment by spatial disorientation.

INTRODUCTION: Maintaining spatial orientation is a biological imperative. When orientation is threatened, attention resources are diverted to regaining orientation, possibly to the detriment of attention required by concurrent tasks. Hence, a factor in aviation mishaps may be the negative impact of disorientation on concurrent performance, such as interpreting instruments. We examined how subjects learn to manage the impact of acute disorienting stimuli on concurrent spatial cognitive tasks. METHODS: Subjects performed the Manikin (MAN) and Choice Reaction Time (CRT) tests under three disorie

Spinal and supraspinal postural networks.

Different species maintain a particular body orientation in space (upright in humans, dorsal-side-up in quadrupeds, fish and lamprey) due to the activity of a closed-loop postural control system. We will discuss operation of spinal and supraspinal postural networks studied in a lower vertebrate (lamprey) and in two mammals (rabbit and cat). In the lamprey, the postural control system is driven by vestibular input. The key role in the postural network belongs to the reticulospinal (RS) neurons. Due to vestibular input, deviation from the stabilized body orientation in any (roll, pitch, yaw) pla

Craniocentric body-sway responses to 500 Hz bone-conducted tones in man.

Whole-body responses evoked by bone-conducted sound, a stimulus known to activate vestibular afferents, were recorded in standing subjects deprived of vision. With the head facing forward, unilateral mastoid vibration (500 Hz, 2 s, 136 dB force level) produced an oblique body sway with a consistent lateral component away from the stimulated ear and an average forward component. The side of stimulation had a powerful influence on the direction but not the magnitude of sway. Individuals' mean response directions were significantly clustered between subjects, as well as within subjects for 12 of
