Biomagnification in Trophic Transfer: Mechanisms of Trans-Trophic Toxicity from Co-Contamination of Aged NPs and TBP in a Soil-Rye-Armyworm System.

The co-contamination of nanoplastics and organic pollutants poses a potential threat to agricultural ecosystems and food chain safety. To systematically reveal the individual and combined toxicity of aged carboxylated nanoplastics (NPs-COOH) and the flame retardant tributyl phosphate (TBP), as well as their transmission mechanisms along the food chain, this study established a "rye-armyworm" model. A multiscale investigation was conducted by integrating molecular docking, multiomics, and traditional toxicological methods. Results indicated that NPs-COOH and TBP form complexes via electrostatic

Phytophthora plurivora: A Serious Challenge for English Walnut (Juglans regia) Cultivation in Europe.

English walnut (Juglans regia) is a species that is highly valued for the quality of its wood and the nutritional and nutraceutical properties of its fruit. A severe dieback of J. regia trees was observed recently in orchards located in three geographically distinct areas of Tuscany, central Italy. Symptoms included root and collar rot, necrosis of the under-bark tissue, bleeding cankers, stunted growth, and crown dieback. Four Phytophthora species were obtained from 239 isolates found on symptomatic J. regia individuals. They were identified, on the basis of macro-morphological (colony shape

The combined influence of microbiome and soil environment contributes to the chemotype differentiation in Atractylodes lancea.

Atractylodes lancea, a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, is divided into two chemotypes based on the production of volatile bioactive compounds: the geo-authentic Maoshan chemotype (MSA, rich in atractylon and atractylodin) and the non-authentic Hubei chemotype (HBA, dominated by hinesol and β-eudesmol). However, the mechanisms underlying the differentiation of these chemotypes remain poorly understood. By sequencing analysis of wild and cultivated A. lancea samples from multiple provinces in China, we revealed that the genetic divergence into Maoshan-Dabie Mountains group (MA) and Qinling-T

Atmospheric nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and carbon monoxide (CO): Boon or Bane for plant metabolism and development?

Urban air pollution has been a global challenge world-wide. While urban vegetation or forest modelling can be useful in reducing the toxicities of the atmospheric gases by their absorption, the surge in gaseous pollutants negatively affects plant growth, thereby altering photosynthetic efficiency and harvest index. The present review analyses our current understanding of the toxic and beneficial effects of atmospheric nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and carbon monoxide (CO) on plant growth and metabolism. The atmospheric levels of these gases vary considerably due to urbanizatio

Antifungal efficacy of photodynamic therapy on Cryptococcus and Candida species is enhanced by Streptomyces spp. extracts in vitro.

The research on actinobacteria isolated from traditional medicinal plants is limited. Here, four new Streptomyces isolates (Ha1, Pp1, UzK and UzM) were obtained from the rhizospheres of Helianthus annuus, Pongamia pinnata and Ziziphus mauritiana, frequently utilized in Indian traditional medicine. The Streptomyces isolates aqueous extracts were studied alone against the growth of the Cryptococcus neoformans H99 reference strain, the fluconazole-tolerant T1-5796 and 89-610 strains, three histone deacetylase (HDAC) genes mutant strains, C. gattii NIH198, Candida albicans, C. glabrata, C. parapsi

Enhanced nutrient control efficiency in sediments using modified clay inactivation coupled with aquatic vegetation in the confluence area of a eutrophic lake.

Developing a long-term method for controlling sediment N and P release is important for enabling lake restoration. In this study, inactivation methods using lanthanum-modified clay, modified zeolite, or planting aquatic vegetation and their combinations were used in the control internal sediment loading (pore water N and P concentrations and their fluxes), and the efficacies of the methods were analyzed. The results indicated that compared to the control sediment, the addition of P sorbent, which was La and Al co-modified attapulgite (ACLA), and N sorbent, which was NaCl-modified zeolite (modi

Roles of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria in mediating soil legacy phosphorus availability.

Phosphorus (P), an essential macronutrient for all life on Earth, has been shown to be a vital limiting nutrient element for plant growth and yield. P deficiency is a common phenomenon in terrestrial ecosystems across the world. Chemical phosphate fertilizer has traditionally been employed to solve the problem of P deficiency in agricultural production, but its application has been limited by the non-renewability of raw materials and the adverse influence on the ecological health of the environment. Therefore, it is imperative to develop efficient, economical, environmentally friendly and high

Promotion of Plant Growth in Arid Zones by Selected Trichoderma spp. Strains with Adaptation Plasticity to Alkaline pH.

Trichoderma species are filamentous fungi that support plant health and confer improved growth, disease resistance, and abiotic stress tolerance. The objective of this study is to describe the physiological characteristics of the abundance and structure of Trichoderma model strains from arid zones and evaluate and describe their possible adaptation and modulation in alkaline pH. The presence of biotic factors such as phytopathogens forces farmers to take more actions such as using pesticides. In addition, factors such as the lack of water worldwide lead to losses in agricultural production. Th

Characterization of Siccibacter sp. Strain C2 a Novel Rhizobacterium that Enhances Tolerance of Barley to Salt Stress.

Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) arouse an increasing interest as an eco-friendly solution for improving crop tolerance to environmental stresses. In this study, we report the characterization of a novel halotolerant PGPR strain (named C2) identified in a screen of rhizospheric bacterial isolates from southeast of Tunisia. Phylogenetic analysis showed that strain C2 is most likely affiliated to the genus Siccibacter with Siccibacter turicensis as the closest species (98.19%). This strain was able to perform phosphate solubilization and production of indole acetic acid (IAA), siderop

Plant-Microbe Interaction: Transcriptional Response of Bacillus Mycoides to Potato Root Exudates.

Beneficial plant-associated bacteria play an important role in promoting growth and preventing disease in plants. The application of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) as biofertilizers or biocontrol agents has become an effective alternative to the use of conventional fertilizers and can increase crop productivity at low cost. Plant-microbe interactions depend upon host plant-secreted signals and a reaction hereon by their associated bacteria. However, the molecular mechanisms of how beneficial bacteria respond to their associated plant-derived signals are not fully understood. Asses

Streptomyces AcH 505 triggers production of a salicylic acid analogue in the fungal pathogen Heterobasidion abietinum that enhances infection of Norway spruce seedlings.

The necrotrophic fungus Heterobasidion spp. is the causal agent of 'annosum root rot' of Norway spruce. In the presence of the rhizosphere bacterium Streptomyces AcH 505, enhanced colonization of Norway spruce roots with Heterobasidion abietinum 331 has previously been observed. By analyzing dual cultures of H. abietinum 331 and Streptomyces AcH 505 with HPLC, a fungal metabolite was identified that was increased in the presence of Streptomyces AcH 505. Likewise, challenge of H. abietum 331 with common antifungals produced by soil streptomycetes rendered the same effect. The structure of the c

Characterization of filamentous bacteriophage PE226 infecting Ralstonia solanacearum strains.

AIMS: The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize new bacteriophages that infect a wide range of plant pathogenic Ralstonia solanacearum strains. METHODS AND RESULTS: Fifteen bacteriophages were isolated from pepper, tomato and tobacco plant rhizospheres infected with R. solanacearum. A host specificity analysis of the isolated phages using nine strains of R. solanacearum indicated great phage diversity in a single soil. Two phages, PE226 and TM227, showed clear plaques on all nine bacterial hosts tested and were virtually identical in morphology and genome. PE226, an Inovirus, is a

Selection for biocontrol bacteria antagonistic toward Rosellinia necatrix by enrichment of competitive avocado root tip colonizers.

Biological control of soil-borne pathogens is frequently based on the application of antagonistic microorganisms selected solely for their ability to produce in vitro antifungal factors. The aim of this work was to select bacteria that efficiently colonize the roots of avocado plants and display antagonism towards Rosellinia necatrix, the causal agent of avocado white root rot. A high frequency of antagonistic strains (ten isolates, 24.4%) was obtained using a novel procedure based on the selection of competitive avocado root tip colonizers. Amplification and sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene, i

Localization and capacity of proton pumps in roots of intact sunflower plants.

Proton extrusion by roots of intact sunflower plants (Helianthus annuus L.) was studied in nutrient solutions or in agar media with a pH indicator. Proton extrusion was enhanced by either iron deficiency, addition of fusicoccin, or single salt solutions of ammonium or potassium salts. The three types of proton extrusion differ in both localization along the roots and capacity. From their sensitivity to ATPase inhibitors it seems justified to characterize them as proton pumps driven by plasma membrane APTases.Enhanced proton extrusion induced by preferential cation uptake from (NH(4))(2)SO(4) o

Microbiome-mediated plant-soil feedbacks as a tool for resilient agriculture.

Conventional agricultural intensification has eroded the biological foundations of productive soil by disrupting the reciprocal interactions, plant-soil feedback (PSF), through which plants actively shape and are continuously shaped by the soil microbiome. Although the molecular mechanisms governing PSF direction are increasingly well-characterized, deliberate PSF management as a practical tool for resilient crop production remains underdeveloped. This is largely because no integrative framework has translated these ecological insights into state-contingent, field-deployable decision rules. Th

Positive effects of reduced tillage intensity on soil organic matter are linked to shifts of K-/r-strategists in soil bacterial community composition.

Compared to conventional ploughing, reduced tillage intensity (e.g. cultivator tillage) benefits soil organic matter (SOM) accumulation, which has been attributed to lower disruption of soil aggregates under reduced tillage intensity. While soil microorganisms have been known to contribute to SOM accumulation, the contribution of microbial processes to SOM content has been overlooked, with the underlying mechanisms remaining unclear. We here estimated how cultivator tillage shifts soil bacterial community composition toward slower-growing K-strategists, in contrast to faster-growing r-strategi

Different land use types around megacities contribute contrasting heavy metal pollution and health risks in soil-leaf vegetable systems.

Variations in urban land use within megacities significantly influence heavy metal (HMs) accumulation and associated dietary health risks in soil-leafy vegetable systems. This study investigated ten seasonal leafy vegetables and their rhizosphere soils from three land-use types in Guangzhou, China: food-basket base (G0), industrial-adjacent (G1), and peri-urban sites (G2). Contamination and health risks were assessed using pollution indices and Monte Carlo simulation (MCS). Soils were primarily contaminated with cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu), corresponding to mild pollution (P = 1.3) and slight

Fermented fruit waste as a microbiome-active soil amendment: a review of field and greenhouse evidence (2009-2025).

Fruit residues generated across the global food supply chain constitute a rapidly growing, biologically reactive waste stream that, when left unmanaged, degrades environmental and agricultural quality, whereas controlled microbial fermentation offers a practical means of transforming this waste into stabilized, biologically active soil amendments. This review synthesizes evidence from field trials, greenhouse experiments, and microbiome studies published between 2009 and 2025 to evaluate the agronomic and microbiome-level effects of fermented fruit waste (FFW) as a soil amendment within circul
