A video method for the evaluation of antidepressant clinical and behavioural actions.

Measuring efficacy and behavioural actions of new antidepressants (ADs) is greatly enhanced by having videotaped records of assessment interviews. This study describes a revised version of the Video Interview Behaviour Evaluation Scales (VIBES), shortened to make it more applicable to clinical trials. The method focuses on physically expressive, motor and social behavioural aspects of the depressive disorder. The Brief version permits juxtaposing of baseline and outcome interviews during the same viewing session thereby reducing the role of memory in the rater's observations. The method provid

The safety and efficacy of oral dextrose for relieving pain following venepuncture in neonates.

The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of oral 30% dextrose during venepuncture in neonates. Neonates admitted in the Special Care Nursery for jaundice from September 200 to January 2001 were recruited for this double-blind randomised controlled trial. The intervention consisted of administration of either 2 ml of oral 30% dextrose or 2 ml of sterile water 2 minutes before venepuncture. The primary outcome measure was the cumulative Neonatal Infant Pain Scale (NIPS) score at 3 minutes after venepuncture and the duration of cry assessed from a videotaped recording. Tw

Dystonia in corticobasal degeneration.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the clinical features, particularly dystonia, in patients with clinically diagnosed or pathologically proven corticobasal degeneration (CBD). BACKGROUND: Although dystonia has been reported in many neurodegenerative disorders, it has not been studied in CBD. Dystonia, often accompanied by painful rigidity and fixed contractures, is one of the most disabling features of CBD. METHODS: The medical records, imaging studies, and videotapes of 66 patients who satisfied the clinical criteria of CBD, evaluated between 1988 and 1998, were reviewed. The occurrence, nature, a

Epilepsy surgery in developing countries.

Epilepsy surgery (ES) is a well-accepted treatment for medically intractable epilepsy patients in developed countries, but it is highly technology dependent. Such technology is not usually available in developing countries. For presurgical evaluation, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and electroencephalogram recording while videotaping the patient have been important. High technology equipment will, in conjunction with MRI, identify approximately 70% of ES candidates. Introducing ES into developing countries will require determining the candidates that are appropriate for the existing medical

Awareness and responsiveness during partial seizures.

We examined the impairment of consciousness during partial seizures (PS) arising from various brain sites according to the operational definition of the international classification, i.e., altered awareness and/or responsiveness. The subjects were 142 patients who underwent intracranial EEG evaluation and subsequent resective surgery. First, the patients were examined to determine whether they usually had been partially or completely aware of their seizures. Second, spontaneous habitual seizures that had been videotaped with simultaneous intracranial EEG recording were reviewed to determine re

Repetitive industrial work and neck and upper limb disorders in females.

A cross-sectional study was performed in which physical examinations of the neck and upper limbs were conducted on 82 currently working female industrial workers with exposure to repetitive work tasks and on 64 currently working referent subjects without exposure to repetitive work tasks. Associations between results of symptom questions and physical examination were sought with variables related to the work environment and to the individuals. In a multivariate model, there were statistically significant associations between exposure to repetitive work and diagnoses in both the neck/shoulders

In vitro modeling of spinal anesthesia. A digital video image processing technique and its application to catheter characterization.

BACKGROUND: Maldistribution of intrathecal local anesthetic has recently been implicated as a contributor to neurotoxic injury. In vitro modeling can be used to understand the distribution of anesthetic agents within the subarachnoid space. We describe an in vitro modeling technique that uses digital video image processing and its application to catheter injection of local anesthetic. METHODS: A clear plastic model of the subarachnoid space, including a simulated spinal cord and cauda equina, was filled with lactated Ringer's solution. Accuracy of two-dimensional echocardiography in the diagnosis of congenital heart disease.

To assess the accuracy of 2-dimensional (2-D) echocardiography in the evaluation of cardiac anatomy in patients with congenital heart disease, 2-D echocardiograms were performed in 126 infants and children before cardiac catheterization and angiocardiography. The segmental echocardiographic analysis included determination of intracardiac, great artery, systemic venous and pulmonary venous anatomy. The 126 patients had 259 separate cardiovascular abnormalities, of which 226 (87%) were prospectively identified by 2-D echocardiography. There were 8 false-positive diagnoses. The most common lesion

Children with a cleft lip and palate: an exploratory study of the role of the parent-child interaction.

INTRODUCTION: Having a child with an orofacial cleft may be associated with a specific pattern of parenting. In order to investigate the parenting style, the present study assessed parent-child interactions during a problem-solving task performed under pressure. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Parent-child interactions were video recorded for 15 families with a child with a cleft lip and palate (CLP), which were then compared to 20 healthy families and 20 families with a child suffering from migraines. The children had to solve a puzzle within a specified time with either their mother or father. RESUL

Time-course gait analysis of hemiparkinsonian rats following 6-hydroxydopamine lesion.

Gait disturbances similar to those of human Parkinson's disease (PD) can be observed in animals after administration of neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) to induce unilateral nigrostriatal dopamine depletion. However, the relationship between gait disturbances and dopamine depletion following 6-OHDA infusion has not been determined. The present study investigated the longitudinal changes of spatiotemporal gait patterns using a walkway system to acquire footprints and lateral limb images over a 6-week period following unilateral 6-OHDA injection into the medial forebrain bundle of rats. Effect of motivational interviewing on rates of early childhood caries: a randomized trial.

PURPOSE: The purposes of this randomized controlled trial were to: (1) test motivational interviewing (MI) to prevent early childhood caries; and (2) use Poisson regression for data analysis. METHODS: A total of 240 South Asian children 6 to 18 months old were enrolled and randomly assigned to either the MI or control condition. Children had a dental exam, and their mothers completed pretested instruments at baseline and 1 and 2 years postintervention. Other covariates that might explain outcomes over and above treatment differences were modeled using Poisson regression. Hazard ratios were pr

Clinical and genetic features of myoclonus-dystonia in 3 cases: a video presentation.

Many cases of myoclonus-dystonia (M-D) are caused by mutations in the epsilon-sarcoglycan (SGCE) gene. We describe 3 children with a similar clinical picture of autosomal dominant M-D and an SGCE mutation in only one of them, suggesting that M-D is genetically heterogeneous.
