Reachable workspace (RWS) quantifies the three-dimensional space accessible to the upper limb, but its relationship with real-world arm use after stroke remains unclear. This study examined associations between camera-based RWS and smartwatch-derived movement behavior in 14 individuals with chronic stroke. Relative surface area (RSA) was measured at baseline, after which participants wore a smartwatch on the affected arm. Smartwatch data were summarized using Gross Movement and Activity Count (GMAC), representing the proportion of wear time spent in active arm movement within a functional work

BACKGROUND: Motor neuron disease (MND) leads to progressive functional decline, making reliable measures of disease progression critical for patient care and clinical trials. Current clinical outcome measures lack the ability to continuously and objectively track functional decline in daily life of patients with MND. This study assessed and validated wrist-worn accelerometry outcome measures for continuous monitoring in MND, with the potential to refine clinical trial outcomes.
METHODS: This longitudinal study included 95 patients with MND who wore an ActiGraph GT9X Link device on their non-d

Physical activity and sedentary behavior are two lifestyle factors related to overall health during adolescence. Public health efforts emphasize the importance of increasing physical activity to improve physical and mental health outcomes, including neurocognitive functioning. However, the unique effects of sedentary behavior on neurocognitive functioning remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate associations between daily moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), sedentary time, and neurocognitive functioning during adolescence. Fifty-seven participants (37% female) between the age

BACKGROUND: With an increasingly younger population and more active patients, assessment of functional outcome is more important than ever in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty. Accelerometers have been used successfully to objectively evaluate gait quality in other fields. The aim of this study was to assess gait quality with accelerometers before and after surgery, and to assess added value of resulting parameters to patient reported outcome measures scores.
METHODS: Sixty-five patients (mean age 65 years (range 41-75)) who underwent primary total knee arthroplasty were evaluated u

BackgroundIntegrating rehabilitation services through wearable systems has the potential to accurately assess the type, intensity, duration, and quality of movement necessary for procuring key outcome measures.ObjectivesThis review aims to explore wearable accelerometry-based technology (ABT) capable of assessing mobility-related functional activities intended for rehabilitation purposes in community settings for neurological populations. In this review, we focus on the accuracy of ABT-based methods, types of outcome measures, and the implementation of ABT in non-clinical settings for rehabili

BACKGROUND: In adolescents, loss of bone mineral mass usually occurs during phases of reduced physical activity (PA), such as when an injured extremity spends several weeks in a cast. We recorded the PA of adolescents with lower limb fractures during the cast immobilization, at 6 and at 18 months after the fracture, and we compared these values with those of healthy controls.
METHODS: Fifty adolescents with a first episode of limb fracture and a control group of 50 healthy cases were recruited for the study through an advertisement placed at the University Children's Hospital of Geneva, Switz

BACKGROUND: Taxi drivers are at an elevated risk for work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), and the reasons for this are prolonged sitting, static postures, and whole-body vibration. Physical activity (PA) may mitigate MSD risk but is often assessed subjectively. This study compared objective (wrist-worn accelerometry) and subjective (IPAQ-S) measures of PA and sedentary behaviours by examining their associations with MSD prevalence in taxi drivers from Spain and Chile.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 170 taxi drivers (mean age 51.9 ± 10.7 years; 87.1% male) completed sociodem

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between physical activity and sleep with inflammatory arthritis (IA) is understudied, and existing research has relied largely on self-report or short-term assessments. The NIH All of Us database provides long-term accelerometry data, enabling more precise estimation of the association between lifestyle behaviors and IA.
METHODS: Participants from the All of Us database who shared electronic health record and Fitbit data were included. Daily activity and sleep metrics were compared between individuals with and without IA using multiple linear regression. Cox propor

BACKGROUND: Some studies have revealed various sleep patterns in adolescents and adults using multidimensional objective sleep parameters. However, it remains unknown whether these patterns are consistent from adolescence to young adulthood and how they relate to long-term obesity.
METHODS: Seven-day accelerometry was conducted in German Infant Study on the influence of Nutrition Intervention PLUS environmental and genetic influences on allergy development (GINIplus) and Influence of Lifestyle factors on the development of the Immune System and Allergies in East and West Germany (LISA) birth

Maximal handgrip strength (HGS) is a convenient and reliable, but incomplete, assessment of muscle function. Although low HGS is a powerful predictor of poor health, several limitations to maximal HGS exist. The predictive value of HGS is restricted because low HGS is associated with a wide range of unspecified health conditions, and other characteristics of muscle function aside from strength capacity are not evaluated. Current HGS protocol guidelines emphasize the ascertainment of maximal force, which is only a single muscle function characteristic. Muscle function is intrinsically multivari

Regular physical activity is associated with physiological and psychosocial benefits in both healthy and clinical populations. However, little is known about tailoring the analysis of physical activity using accelerometers to the specific characteristics of chronic conditions. Whilst accelerometry is broadly used to assess physical activity, recommendations on calibration in paediatric clinical groups are warranted. The aim of this systematic review was to provide a critical overview of protocols used to calibrate accelerometry in children and adolescents with clinical conditions, as well as t

BACKGROUND: The ActiPASS software was developed from the open-source Acti4 activity classification algorithm for thigh-worn accelerometry. However, the original algorithm has not been validated in children or compared with a child-specific set of algorithm thresholds. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of ActiPASS in classifying activity types in children using 2 published sets of Acti4 thresholds.
METHODS: Laboratory and free-living data from 2 previous studies were used. The laboratory condition included 41 school-aged children (11.0 [4.8] y; 46.5% male), and the free-living condition

OBJECTIVE: Vocal cord (VC) movement has been demonstrated by the use of accelerometry (ACC) to decrease in parallel with the electromyographic amplitude (EMG) during ongoing traction injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN). When RLN function recovers, discrepancies between EMG and VC movement have been reported in clinical and experimental studies. The present study was conducted to clarify the actual relationship between EMG and VC movement measured by ACC during nerve recovery.
METHODS: EMG obtained by continuous nerve monitoring (C-IONM) was compared with ACC during traction injury t

OBJECTIVE: To create and compare individual and group-based cut-points for wrist accelerometry that correspond to moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in people with spinal cord injury (SCI).
DESIGN: Participants completed a graded treadmill-wheeling test while being assessed for oxygen consumption, wrist-acceleration vector magnitude, and spoke acceleration. Oxygen consumption was converted to SCI metabolic equivalents (METs), and linear regression was applied to determine an individualized vector magnitude cut-point (counts per minute, VM-CPM) corresponding with MVPA (≥3 SCI METs).

PURPOSE: Conventional transtibial technique fails to restore the rotational knee stability in spite of successful anterior laxity, while anatomic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using the anteromedial portal technique has been developed expecting better rotational kinematics because of closer reproduction of the native anterior cruciate ligament anatomy. However, the rotational instability after those two procedures has not been fully examined especially in terms of dynamic component of the rotational stability. The purpose was to assess the effect of anatomic versus non-anatomic tun

BACKGROUND: Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for dystonia is usually targeted to the globus pallidus internus (GPi), though stimulation of the ventral-intermediate nucleus of the thalamus (Vim) can be an effective treatment for phasic components of dystonia including tremor. We report on a patient who developed a syndrome of bilateral upper limb postural and action tremor and progressive cervical dystonia with both phasic and tonic components which were responsive to Vim DBS. We characterize and quantify this effect using markerless-3D-kinematics combined with accelerometry.
METHODS: Stereo video
