Radar-Based Fall Detection Using Micro-Doppler Signatures: A Comparative Analysis of YOLO Architectures.

Human lifespan is increasing in parallel with the development levels of societies. Consequently, the number of elderly individuals worldwide is also rising day by day. One of the most significant risks these individuals face is falling. In this study, fall and daily activity data were collected from different home environments using a continuous-wave (CW) radar. Micro-Doppler signatures were generated from 700 data samples obtained from 10 individuals. Furthermore, the dataset was expanded by doubling the number of spectrogram images through data augmentation. The YOLO architecture, generally

Falls Prevalence and Fear of Falling in Multiple Sclerosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Approximately 50-70% of people with multiple sclerosis (MS) experience at least one fall event during their lifetime. These events can have debilitating consequences in the quality of life of the individuals' experiencing them, as they can often result in injury, extending beyond physical harm, which may negatively impact the rehabilitation process as well as their psychological well-being. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the proportion of one-time and repeated falls among patients with MS within a year and investigate any potential associati

Estimation of sinking velocity using free-falling dynamically scaled models: Foraminifera as a test case.

The velocity of settling particles is an important determinant of distribution in extinct and extant species with passive dispersal mechanisms, such as plants, corals and phytoplankton. Here, we adapted dynamic scaling, borrowed from engineering, to determine settling velocity. Dynamic scaling leverages physical models with relevant dimensionless numbers matched to achieve similar dynamics to the original object. Previous studies have used flumes, wind tunnels or towed models to examine fluid flow around objects with known velocities. Our novel application uses free-falling models to determine

Value-Added Electrodiagnostics: Targeting Interventions for Fall Risk Reduction.

Walking confers numerous health benefits, particularly for middle-aged and older patients with diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Nevertheless, it brings a risk of injurious falls, especially among populations with diabetes and metabolic syndrome-related distal neuromuscular decline and frank neuropathy. Those who stand to benefit most from walking are at greatest risk. Development of practical clinical tools to more precisely quantify neuromuscular function and link it to mobility outcomes will help clinicians target interventions toward those at risk for falls. Electrodiagnosis, with inclusion

Osteosarcopenia: where bone, muscle, and fat collide.

As the world's population ages, the prevalence of chronic diseases increases. Sarcopenia and osteoporosis are two conditions that are associated with aging, with similar risk factors that include genetics, endocrine function, and mechanical factors. Additionally, bone and muscle closely interact with each other not only anatomically, but also chemically and metabolically. Fat infiltration, a phenomenon observed in age-related bone and muscle loss, is highly prevalent and more severe in sarcopenic and osteoporotic subjects. Clinically, when individuals suffer a combination of both disorders, ne

A clinical, physiology and pharmacology evaluation of orthostatic hypotension in the elderly.

Orthostatic hypotension is very common in the elderly. It increases morbidity and is an independant predictor of all cause mortality. It is defined as a fall in systolic blood pressure greater than 20 mm Hg or a fall in diastolic blood pressure greater than 10 mm Hg within 3 minutes of standing. Symptoms include light headedness, weakness, blurred vision, fatigue and lethargy and falls. Most patients have orthostatic hypotension due to non neurogenic causes. Drugs like antihypertensives and tricyclic antidepressants are very common causes of orthostatic hypotension. Diagnosis is based on the h

The characteristics of falls in an institutionalized elderly cohort in China - A Retrospective observational study.

Falls are classified by WHO as the second highest cause of accidental injuries in older adults. It remains unclear what characteristics of falls are in elderly individuals that do not present definite causes. A total of 304 institutionalized older adults presented at least one fall were recruited in this retrospective observational study. The fall incidence was significantly higher at 4am-8am, at locations involving sitting down or standing up and involving flat ground, and when individuals going to toilets, getting off bed or walking. The most frequently injured sites were head and lower limb

Analysis of Closed Soft Tissue Subcutaneous Injuries-"Impact Décollement" in Fatal Free Falls From Height-Forensic Aspect.

The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of "décollement," traumatic lesions of subcutaneous soft tissue, among victims fatally injured because of falls from different heights. Three hundred seventy-five cases of fatalities due to injuries acquired when falling from various heights onto a solid, flat surface, in which the complete forensic autopsy was performed, were analyzed. Décollement was noted in 125 (33%) of the cases. Comparative analysis of groups with and without décollement and observed factors has shown that the height of fall and the manner of death have statistically sign

A descriptive study of accidental skeletal injuries and non-accidental skeletal injuries of child maltreatment.

BACKGROUND: Lack of awareness and recognition of child maltreatment is the major reason behind underreporting. All victims often interact with the health care system for routine or emergency care. In several research works, non-accidental fractures are the second most common injury in maltreated children and it is represented up to one-third of cases. AIM OF THE STUDY: To determine the incidence of different types of accidental and non-accidental skeletal injuries among children, estimate the severity of injuries according to the modified injury severity score and to determine the degree of f

Stumblers and Tumblers: Two Pathways to "Unintentional" Fall-Related Traumatic Brain Injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI), including concussion, is the commonest neurological condition in high-income countries and is the second commonest condition next to migraines. Although most of these injuries are unintentional, substance abuse and age-related physiological factors have been implicated as causal factors of fall-related TBIs. Our study used qualitative methods and a life course perspective to examine whether life events and psychosocial antecedents, such as early adverse childhood experiences, play a role in the occurrence of non-intentional fall-related TBI. In-depth interviews we

Accidental injuries among older adults: An incidence study.

BACKGROUND: To date, the majority of studies assessing accidental injuries among the elderly have focused on fall injuries, while studies of other mechanisms of injuries have been lacking. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to investigate all injury-related visits among older adults to an emergency department and risk factors for injuries. METHODS: Data were collected on all registered visits of adults, ≥67 years old, living in the capital of Iceland, to the emergency department of Landspitali, the National University Hospital, in 2011 and 2012. RESULTS: The yearly incidence rat

Investigation of injuries sustained from falls down stairs.

Interpretation of injuries sustained from fatal falls involving stairs is a challenge encountered by death investigation teams regularly. The high incidence of this occurrence is because stairs are a common entity in society. Without a medical evaluation of an individual's injuries, it is difficult to determine whether a fall from stairs contributed to how the individual died. The purpose of this study is to characterize the injuries of individuals that were sustained from a confirmed fatal fall involving stairs within our jurisdiction (Ontario, Canada) during 2014-2020. In a retrospective cro

[Epidemiological study on the trend of accidental deaths among children under five in Guangzhou, 2001 - 2010].

OBJECTIVE: To study the trend of accidental death among children under 5 years of age. METHODS: A survey on accidental death among children was performed in Guangzhou to compare the data from the national monitoring program on the deaths under five in the same period during 2001 - 2010. Data on mortality and causes of injures were adjusted by missing reports. RESULTS: Mortality rates on injuries were decreasing annually from 2001 to 2010. Comparing with 2001, the magnitude of the drop in mortality among the 0, 1 - 4 and under 5 year groups were 72.02%, 77.17% and 74.66% respectively, with st

Comparative medico-legal analysis of falls from height injuries in adults and children: Patterns and predictors of mortality.

Falls from height (FFH) lead to significant morbidity and mortality in many countries. This study analyzed the characteristics of FFH and identified predictors of mortality. The study prospectively examined 67 patients: pediatric (56.7%) and adult (43.3%) patients following FFH. Childhood falls were entirely accidental and primarily occurred at home, mainly from balconies (55.3%) and rooftops (34.2%). In adults, FFH occurred mainly in occupational (58.6%) and accidental (24.1%) circumstances. Suicidal FFH was reported in only five cases, constituting 17.2% of adult FFH. In adults, falls from s

Case-based analysis to assess the validity of the Hat Brim Line Rule in cranial trauma.

This study aims to evaluate the forensic reliability of the Hat Brim Line Rule (HBL Rule) in differentiating between accidental falls and intentionally inflicted blunt head trauma. Given the frequent diagnostic ambiguity in cranial injuries, particularly in forensic autopsies, the HBL Rule offers a potentially useful anatomical reference point for assessing the origin of skull fractures. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 78 anonymized autopsy reports from the digital archive of the Institute of Legal Medicine in Berlin, spanning from 2008 to 2024. Each case was classified based on the
