Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common benign tumor affecting both major and minor salivary glands. Parotid gland is the most commonly affected major salivary gland. Among minor salivary glands, palate is the most commonly affected site followed by lips, cheeks, gingiva, floor of the mouth, and tongue. PA of buccal minor salivary glands is a very rare occurrence both in adults and children. In this report, we present a case of PA of buccal minor salivary gland in an adult patient who was successfully treated by wide local surgical excision, and after a follow-up period of one year there w

A 40-year-old woman was referred to our hospital with abnormal findings on chest X-ray. Her medical history was remarkable in that she had presented with a pleomorphic adenoma in the right parotid gland treated by surgical removal approximately 12 years previously. Chest computed tomography showed well-defined non-calcified nodules of the bilateral lobes, so she underwent segmentectomy of the right upper lobe and middle lobe. The histopathological diagnosis was metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma of the lung, a rare entity.

Parotid pleomorphic adenoma is the most frequent tumor of salivary glands. The prognosis depends on the recurrences because they could lead to iatrogenic events (facial paralysis). Moreover the risk of malignant transformation increases with the number of local relapses. This article aims at reviewing histological and radiological criteria and the surgical techniques. To improve local control, adjuvant irradiation (in first intention or after recurrence) may be useful but is still controversial for benign tumors in young patients with a risk of radio-induced cancer. We listed studies in which

A 13-year-old female mongrel dog had a pleomorphic adenoma of the lacrimal gland in the right upper orbit. The tumor measured 3.8 x 3.0 x 3.3 cm, appeared white, round, and firm, and pressed the right globe and surrounding tissues. Histopathologically, the tumor had a thin connective tissue capsule and was composed of tubules with two cell types, some resembling luminal epithelial cells making up the tubular structures and the other of myoepithelial cells. Epithelial tubules were disposed in an adenomatous fashion and separated from each other by proliferating pleomorphic myoepithelial cells.

We reviewed the clinical and imaging files of 15 patients with pathologically confirmed recurrent pleomorphic adenomas of the head and neck. The primary tumours were in the lacrimal gland (1 case), cheek (2), palate (5), parotid gland (4), and submandibular gland (3). Recurrence was generally late, with an average of 14.9 years between initial surgery and recurrence. Multiple recurrent tumours, measuring 5-50 mm were found in eight patients. In all palatal cases recurrence was large and solitary. Most recurrent pleomorphic adenomas were well delineated with smooth margins, like most primary tu

A study was made of 187 patients with parotid pleomorphic adenoma treated by radiotherapy. This followed surgery but with incomplete removal or tumor spillage. In the early years of the study radiotherapy was given by radium needle implant done usually at the time of surgery, but from the late 1960s beam-directed external radiotherapy with a head shell was used most commonly. A 3-field technique or wedge pair was the standard technique. The median age was 46 with nearly half the patients (87/187) aged between 40 and 60, and the ratio of women to men was 1.4:1 (110:77). Median follow-up for all

IMPORTANCE: Surgery is the mainstay of treatment for pleomorphic adenomas (PAs) of the parotid to prevent further growth and potential future malignant transformation. While historical case series have reported transformation rates as high as 10%, there is a lack of contemporary methodologically sound data.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the rate of carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA) detection in untreated PAs and investigate factors associated with malignant neoplasm.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study reviewed all cases of primary PAs managed at a quaternary referral center b

A pleomorphic adenoma or mixed tumor is a heterogeneous benign tumor of the salivary glands. The most frequent site is the parotid gland. It is rare in the accessory salivary glands, preferably located in the oral mucosa (roof of the mouth, floor of the mouth, cheeks, and lips). The diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma of the palate can only be made on a biopsy while remaining vigilant about the possible existence of other neoplastic foci within it. Definitive anatomopathology after excision is mandatory. Here, we present a clinical case of pleomorphic adenoma of the palate. We propose to specify

INTRODUCTION: Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign tumor of the parotid gland. It has a tendency of recurrence and malignant transformation. The surgical excision of this lesion continues to be the subject of a major debate. In this study, we discuss optimal surgical options for pleomorphic adenoma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed clinical records of 82 patients who underwent surgery.
RESULTS: The tumor was localized in the superficial lobe in 81.7% of cases. Tumors of the deep lobe were removed by total parotidectomy. Those of the superficial lobe underwent partial exofacial par

OBJECTIVES: Surgery for benign parotid tumours is associated with potential sequelae which may significantly deteriorate patient's quality of life. Sometimes the pursuit of reducing the risk of these complications induces surgeon to limit the extent of the parotid gland removed with a tumour. This may lead to a decrease in tumour local control which is especially true for pleomorphic adenoma. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence of complications after certain types of parotid surgery for primary pleomorphic adenomas and to analyse risk factors related to their occurrence.

We report an unusual presentation of a salivary pleomorphic adenoma in the uvula. The adenoma caused otalgia and hypernasal speech in a patient without additional symptoms. The tumor was surgically excised with safe margins of the healthy tissue. After the excision of the mass, the new uvula was reconstructed through modified radiofrequency-assisted uvulopalatoplasty technique. After the treatment, the patient has remained disease-free for 1 year.

A 52-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of an abnormal shadow on chest X-ray. Chest computed tomography scan and broncho-fiberscopic examination revealed a tumor at the left main bronchus. The tumor was removed completely by partial resection of the left main bronchus with thoracotomy. Historical finding of the resected specimen revealed a benign pleomorphic adenoma of the bronchus. The postoperative course was un-eventful for 9 years. We reported a rare case of pleomorphic adenoma of the bronchus.

We report a rare case of pleomorphic adenoma arising from the nasal septum. A 32-year-old woman presented with a 3-week-history of left-sided nasal obstruction. Computed tomographic scans revealed an oval mass, measuring about 30 mm in its greatest dimension, in the left anterior nasal cavity. The tumor arose from the anterior part of the nasal septum, and was removed endoscopically with endonasal approach. The microscopic finding showed a lobular and duct-like structures consisting of a loose chondromyxoid stroma. This lesion had histological characteristics of a pleomorphic adenoma, and this

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this article is to present an intraoral technique, which allows a wide local excision of pleomorphic adenoma of the palate with adequate mucosal and periosteal margins.
STUDY DESIGN: Between September 1992 and May 1994 ten patients with pleomorphic adenoma of the palate were treated by one surgeon at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Unit of the Jordan University of Science and Technology. A surgical technique, which was particularly useful for tumours extending into the soft palate, is described.
RESULTS: Nine patients were aged between 15 and 25 years (mean age

OBJECTIVE: Basal cell adenoma is a rare benign epithelial tumor of the salivary gland. The objective of this study is to present the CT findings of parotid basal cell adenoma. We also compare CT findings of basal cell adenoma with those of pleomorphic adenoma, the most common parotid tumor, to determine whether any features on CT can help differentiate these two entities.
CONCLUSION: Basal cell adenomas of the parotid gland are located chiefly in the superficial lobe. They are generally round, well-circumscribed tumors that show heterogeneous enhancement on CT. The age of the patient and the

AIMS: Pleomorphic adenoma gene 1 (PLAG1) rearrangement is well known in pleomorphic adenoma (PA), which is histologically characterised by admixed epithelial and mesenchymal components. Multiple fusion variants of PLAG1 and HMGA2 have been reported; currently, however, little is known regarding the clinicopathological impacts of these fusion types METHODS AND RESULTS: We examined the PLAG1- and HMGA2-related fusion status in 105 PAs and 11 cases of carcinoma ex PAs (CXPA) arising from salivary glands and lacrimal glands to elucidate their correlation to the clinicopathological factors.
