BACKGROUND: Ridge resorption following tooth extraction may be reduced by alveolar ridge preservation (ARP). Previous randomized clinical trials and systematic reviews have suggested that autogenous tooth bone graft (ATB) can be an effective alternative material for ARP. However, the results are heterogeneous. Therefore, our research aimed to evaluate the efficacy of ATB in ARP.
METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in Cochrane Library, Embase, MEDLINE and Scopus for studies published from inception to 31 November 2021. We searched searched for randomized, non-randomized controlled trial

Tooth extraction triggers alveolar ridge resorption, and when this resorption is extensive, it can complicate subsequent reconstructive procedures that use dental implants. Clinical data demonstrate that the most significant dimensional changes in the ridge occur soon after tooth extraction. Here, we sought to understand whether a correlation existed between the rate at which an extraction socket heals and the extent of alveolar ridge resorption. Maxillary molars were extracted from young and osteoporotic rodents, and quantitative micro-computed tomographic imaging, histology, and immunohistoc

Alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) is a method of decreasing bone resorption following tooth extraction and facilitating prosthetically-driven implant placement. An understanding of the physiological responses occurring after extraction and the effects of ARP are important in order to implement clinical procedures. ARP is a predictable way to reduce undesirable horizontal and vertical ridge reduction following extraction when dental implant treatment is to be delayed. Guided bone regeneration, socket fillers, socket sealers and growth factors have been used satisfactorily. However, there is cur

BACKGROUND: The physiologic bone remodeling accompanying tooth extraction is a phenomenon well described in the dental literature. Extraction sockets severely compromised by local infection, trauma, iatrogenesis, or other factors may exhibit enhanced reduction in alveolar dimensions during healing. The purpose of this report is to present an alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) protocol specifically intended for use at severely compromised sites.
METHODS: Seven patients presented to the Department of Periodontics, Army Postgraduate Dental School, Fort Gordon, Georgia, requiring extraction of tee

BACKGROUND: Accurate assessment of alveolar ridge width is essential for implant treatment planning. Although cone-beam computed tomography provides detailed three-dimensional information, chairside ridge-mapping techniques remain valuable because of their simplicity, accessibility, and cost-effectiveness.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to describe the design, clinical application, and potential advantages of a novel dental bone mapping caliper for transgingival ridge assessment.
TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION: The proposed instrument incorporates a blunt external reference arm, a control

OBJECTIVE: To verify whether ridge preservation is effective in the reduction of dimensional loss and in bone formation compared to spontaneous healing in extraction sockets of periodontally compromised teeth.
METHODS: Twenty-six subjects requiring tooth extraction for stage III/IV periodontitis were randomly assigned to one of two interventions: alveolar ridge preservation using collagenated bovine bone mineral and a resorbable collagen membrane (test, RP) or spontaneous healing (control, SH). Six months later, postoperative cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was performed to measure the l

A systematic review and network meta-analysis was conducted to compare different bone-substitute materials used for alveolar ridge preservation after tooth extraction. The electronic search was carried out on Embase, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Scopus, LILACS, and grey literature up to March 22, 2020 (registration number INPLASY202030005). Only randomized controlled trials were included to answer the following PICOS question: 'What grafting materials produce greater alveolar ridge preservation after tooth extraction?' The primary outcomes were the alveolar width resorption 1 mm b

Alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) therapy is indicated to attenuate the physiologic resorptive events that occur as a consequence of tooth extraction with the purpose of facilitating tooth replacement therapy. This randomized controlled trial was primarily aimed at testing the efficacy of ARP as compared with unassisted socket healing. A secondary objective was to evaluate the effect that local phenotypic factors play in the volumetric reduction of the alveolar bone. A total of 53 subjects completed the study. Subjects were randomized into either the control group, which involved only tooth ex

This study aimed to simultaneously assess hard and soft tissues alterations and their proportions after alveolar ridge preservation (ARP). Participants (n = 65) who were previously enrolled in a clinical trial investigating ARP healing were selected. The CBCT DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) and the cast STL (stereolithographic) files of each subject were imported, segmented, and superimposed. A cross-section view of the superimposed image presented the outlines from each DICOM and STL file. The center of preserved ridge was selected in the superimposed image and used to

BACKGROUND: Alveolar bone undergoes volumetric changes after extraction due to physiologic bone remodeling. The amount of alveolar bone available during prosthodontic treatment can affect the esthetic outcome of the treatment and make implant placement challenging. Socket preservation techniques are advocated postextraction to maintain the bone's vertical and horizontal alveolar bone dimensions and prevent its atrophy.
AIM: This review is oriented toward a clinician, describing the different materials and techniques in practice today for socket preservation.
REVIEW RESULTS: A variety of meth

A postextraction socket is always open to different treatment possibilities. A straightforward clinical classification may help evaluate which surgical approach is best suited for the case being treated. Four different classes are defined on the basis of the local anatomy of the site, available bone volume, and soft tissue level. For every clinical situation, either immediate placement, early placement, alveolar ridge preservation, or staged approach can be selected as a treatment modality according to the classifications listed.

Resorption of alveolar bone that occurs following tooth extraction is irreversible, it may compromise the restoration of implants or conventional prostheses. Ridge preservation can minimize ridge resorption after tooth extraction. In this article, healing features of socket after tooth extraction, factors influencing ridge remodeling, and the use of bioma-terials were reviewed.

In the dental implant era, there has been growing interest in exploring the most effective methods to minimize morphologic alteration in the postextraction site. Despite modern methods of ridge preservation, resorption of the ridge is inevitable. The optimal approach to minimizing the rate and amount of these changes is still a subject of controversy. This article provides a contemporary review of the different approaches to preserve alveolar ridge dimensions. A suggested classification for single extraction sockets is presented along with multiple treatment options for each class.

BACKGROUND: A recent systematic review failed to identify one approach for alveolar ridge preservation with superior outcomes. The present case series aimed to evaluate the dimensional changes of sites undergoing Biologically-oriented Alveolar Ridge Preservation (BARP).
METHODS: The sockets were filled with a collagen sponge up to 4-5 mm from the most coronal extensions of the crest. Xenograft particles were placed to fill the coronal part. In cases with a compromised buccal/lingual bone, an additional collagen sponge was interposed between the residual cortical bone plate and the mucoperiost
