A 45-year-old man with retinitis pigmentosa experienced total aniridia in the left eye due to direct blunt trauma 2 years after uneventful bilateral phacoemulsification via a 3.5 mm clear corneal incision. Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) of the left eye revealed no missing or stretched zonular fibers extending from the ciliary body to the anterior capsule, a few iris root remnants, a normal ciliary body, an in-the-bag acrylic intraocular lens, and Descemet's membrane dehiscence at the corneal tunnel through which the iris extruded. The eye recovered 20/25 visual acuity after 1 week. Transient h

We present the first reported use in the United States of a black iris-diaphragm intraocular lens (IOL) for the treatment of traumatic aniridia and aphakic bullous keratopathy. The patient presented to a university-based practice with contact-lens-intolerant aniridia and aphakia with painful bullous keratopathy from a failed corneal graft. He was treated with combined penetrating keratoplasty and transscleral fixation of an aniridia IOL. The patient's preoperative symptoms of debilitating glare and photophobia resolved substantially after surgery, despite mild postoperative inflammation that r

Aniridia, which is a rare congenital defect of the eye, consists of iris hypoplasia or aplasia, and additional ocular abnormalities. It is most commonly caused by autosomal dominant PAX6 gene mutations. However, in about 30% of cases, it is associated with chromosomal rearrangements in the 11p13 region. The aim of this study was to identify the potential PAX6 gene variants, which could cause the isolated aniridia. Eight patients with isolated aniridia were included in this study. MLPA analysis allowed in the past to exclude large structural rearrangements of the PAX6 and adjacent genes like WT

Congenital aniridia is a rare ocular disorder characterized by iris malformation. We present a 3-year-old boy with bilateral anterior-segment dysgenesis, congenital aniridia, congenital aphakia, secondary glaucoma, limbal stem cell deficiency, and band keratopathy. As the intraocular pressure was uncontrolled with antiglaucoma medications, the patient underwent multiple bilateral traditional cyclophotocoagulation (CPC), in addition to micropulse CPC. To the best of our knowledge, aniridia association with congenital aphakia and congenital glaucoma has been very rarely reported.

Aniridia is a panocular disease characterized by iris hypoplasia, accompanied by other ocular manifestations, with a high clinical variability and overlapping with different abnormalities of the anterior and posterior segment. This review focuses on the genetic features of this autosomal dominant pathology, which is caused by the haploinsufficiency of the PAX6 gene. Mutations causing premature stop codons are the most frequent among the wider mutational spectrum of PAX6, with more than 600 different mutations identified so far. Recent advances in next-generation sequencing (NGS) have increased

Congenital aniridia is a multisystemic genetic disease due to a mutation in PAX6 gene which severely affects the development and functionality of the human eyes. In patients affected by the mutation, aside from the absence or defects of iris tissue formation, abnormalities in position or opacities of the crystalline lens, macular hypoplasia, ocular surface disease is the main cause of visual loss and the deterioration of the quality of life of most patients. Limbal stem cell deficiency combined with tear film instability and secondary dry eye cause aniridic keratopathy which, in advanced stage

A patient with bilateral aniridia and progressive congenital cataract was treated at the age of 7 years through phacoaspiration with femtosecond laser capsulotomy, in-the-bag intraocular lens implantation, and pars plana vitrectomy (combined with posterior capsulotomy). The diameter of the planned anterior capsulotomy was 4.7 mm; however, due to elevated tension in the young capsular bag, the capsulotomy diameter increased (to around 6 mm) shortly after release of the tension by the laser. In addition, the patient had a very flat and small cornea, causing the formation of air bubbles in the cu

BACKGROUND: inborn isolated aniridia is rare bilateral impairment of several eye structures manifesting mainly by absence of iris, photophobia and decreased visual acuity. There are also others ocular symptoms associated with aniridia such as nystagmus, strabismus, eyelid ptosis, amblyopia, serious refractive errors, anisometropia, corneal changes, impairment of the lens, chamber angle dysgenesis, optic nerve and macular hypoplasia and congenital or secondary glaucoma. The most frequent aetiology of this eye dysgenesis is mutation in PAX6. Aim of this report is to describe ocular findings in t

PURPOSE: To identify a disease-causing paired box 6 (PAX6) gene mutation in a Chinese family affected by autosomal dominant congenital aniridia.
METHODS: All participants in the study, including the aniridia family and 100 unrelated senile cataract controls, received a comprehensive ophthalmic examination. Genomic DNA was extracted from their whole blood. Mutation screen in all exons and their adjacent splicing junctions of PAX6 was performed by direct sequencing of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products. PCR products of heterozygous mutation were further cloned into T-vectors and confirmed

OBJECTIVE: The PAX6 gene encodes a transcriptional regulator involved in oculogenesis and other developmental processes such as aniridia, a congenital condition characterized by the underdevelopment of the iris of eyes. The function of the PAX6 gene in these two conditions is still poorly defined. The purpose of this study is to identify the mutation of the PAX6 gene in a Chinese family with aniridia.
METHODS: Two aniridia patients collected from the family underwent full ophthalmologic examination. Genomic DNA was prepared from venous leukocytes of the two patients and five healthy individua

CASE REPORT: We present the case of a newborn baby in whom we observed aniridia, congenital glaucoma and edematous corneas, without clearance of the cornea after glaucoma surgery, and in whom a keratoplasty was considered. The patient had no evidence of systemic diseases and no deletion of chromosome 11.
DISCUSSION: It is important to perform a thorough ophthalmological and systemic exploration in newborn patients with aniridia due to other diseases that can be associated with it. We present the unusual case in which aniridia, congenital glaucoma and white corneas coexisted in a newborn baby.

Anterior segment dysgenesis syndrome occurs frequently in Rocky Mountain horses and has two distinct ocular phenotypes: (1) large cysts originating from the temporal ciliary body or peripheral retina and (2) multiple anterior segment anomalies including ciliary cysts, iris hypoplasia, iridocorneal adhesions and opacification, nuclear cataract, and megalocornea. To determine if anterior segment dysgenesis syndrome is heritable in horses we performed ophthalmic examinations and collected pedigree information on horses (n = 516) in an extended Rocky Mountain horse pedigree. Logistic regressive se

PURPOSE: To evaluate the suitability and safety of a black diaphragm posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL).
SETTING: Department of Ophthalmology, Leeds General Infirmary, Leeds, United Kingdom.
METHODS: Seven patients who had secondary implantation of a Morcher 67G black diaphragm posterior chamber IOL were identified. All patients were men with a mean age of 42 years who had previous ocular trauma resulting in extensive loss of iris tissue (traumatic aniridia). Simultaneous penetrating keratoplasty was performed in 4 cases. Minimum follow-up was 10 months (mean 19 months).
RESULTS: Best

BACKGROUND: Hitherto no attention was paid to the prebasal vitreous body in children with congenital aniridia. Obviously there are, at least occasionally, two remarkable anomalies of the anterior hyaloid membrane.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two children (one 3 years and the other 4 years old) with congenital anirida were examined in supine position at a special slitlamp in general anaesthesia. Both children were healthy besides their ocular malformation; pregnancy and delivery were unremarkable.
RESULTS: Only the younger child showed bilaterally in symmetrical fashion a thin, circular, whitish l

Seven eyes from seven children with congenital aniridia were studied histologically in order to assess the relationship between congenital and acquired abnormalities. At the time of enucleation the children ranged in age from six days to 14 years. There was no history of previous intraocular surgery in any of the children. Besides iridic and ciliary body hypoplasia three congenital abnormalities of the anterior segment were noted: anomalous development of the anterior chamber angle, incomplete cleavage of the anterior chamber angle, and attenuation of Bowman's membrane. Three acquired abnormal

The history of a family with aniridia (11 patients) is presented. Morphologically the following changes were found: Ptosis, microcornea, anterior embryotoxon, defects of the iris ranging from corectopia and coloboma to hypoplasia of the iris and clinical aniridia cataracts and hypoplasia of the fovea. Functionally there was reduced visual acuity (best vision 0.2), nystagmus and strabismus. Dark adaptation, electrooculogram, photopic and scotopic electroretinogram were within normal limits. The patients were found to have a red-green color vision deficiency, which was perhaps caused by foveal h

To present a case of a 20-year-old female who underwent a novel surgical technique for post-traumatic aphakia, aniridia, and astigmatism. Prior to surgery, the artificial iris (AI) (Customflex Artificial Iris, HumanOptics) was sutured to a toric intraocular lens (IOL) (Carlevale, Soleko), folded, and then implanted in the sulcus through a small corneal incision. The procedure was complication-free and resulted in favorable functional and cosmetic outcomes. The Carlevale IOL provides stable support for the AI, effectively addressing post-traumatic aphakia, aniridia, and astigmatism. This techni
