Pharmaceuticals in biota in the aquatic environment: analytical methods and environmental implications.

The presence of pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment is an ever-increasing issue of concern as they are specifically designed to target specific metabolic and molecular pathways in organisms, and they may have the potential for unintended effects on nontarget species. Information on the presence of pharmaceuticals in biota is still scarce, but the scientific literature on the subject has established the possibility of bioaccumulation in exposed aquatic organisms through other environmental compartments. However, few studies have correlated both bioaccumulation of pharmaceutical compounds

Identification of an enzymatically formed glutathione conjugate of the cyanobacterial hepatotoxin microcystin-LR: the first step of detoxication.

Cyanobacterial toxins have adverse effects on mammals, birds and fish and are being increasingly recognised as a potent stress factor and health hazard factor in aquatic ecosystems. Microcystins, cyclic heptapeptides and a main group of the cyanotoxins are mainly retained within the producer cells during cyanobacterial bloom development. However, these toxins are released into the surrounding medium by senescence and lysis of the blooms. Any toxin present could then come into contact with a wide range of aquatic organisms including phytoplankton grazers, invertebrates, fish and aquatic plants.

Impacts of atmospheric particulate matter deposition on phytoplankton: A review.

In many rapidly urbanizing and industrializing countries, atmospheric pollution causes severe environmental problems and compromises the health of humans and ecosystems. Atmospheric emissions, which encompass gases and particulate matter, can be transported back to the earth's surface through atmospheric deposition. Atmospheric deposition supplies chemical species that can serve as nutrients and/or toxins to aquatic ecosystems, resulting in wide-ranging responses of aquatic organisms. Among the aquatic organisms, phytoplankton is the basis of the aquatic food web and is a key player in global

Bioaccumulation patterns of methyl mercury and essential fatty acids in lacustrine planktonic food webs and fish.

Organisms of the planktonic food web convey essential nutrients as well as contaminants to animals at higher trophic levels. We measured concentrations of methyl mercury (MeHg) and essential fatty acids (EFAs, key nutrients for aquatic food webs) in four size categories of planktonic organisms - seston (10-64 microm), micro-(100-200 microm), meso-(200-500 microm), and macrozooplankton (>500 microm) - as well as total mercury (THg) and EFAs in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in coastal lakes. We demonstrate that, in all lakes during this summer sampling, MeHg concentrations of planktonic or

Novel Insights on 6:6 Perfluoroalkyl Phosphonic Acid-Induced Melanin Synthesis Disorders Leading to Pigmentation in Tadpoles.

As alternatives to traditional per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, perfluoroalkyl phosphonic acids (PFPiAs) are widely present in aquatic environments and can potentially harm aquatic organisms. Pigmentation affects the probability of aquatic organisms being preyed on and serves as an important toxic endpoint of development, but little is known about the impacts of PFPiAs on the development of aquatic organisms. In this study, Xenopus laevis embryos were exposed to 6:6 PFPiA (1, 10, and 100 nM) for 14 days. The developed tadpoles exhibited evident pigmentation with increased melanin particle

Differential PFAS transfer through the terrestrial and aquatic food web to predatory spiders.

The environmental persistence of Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) results in prolonged exposure of organisms, which in turn leads to bioaccumulation and trophic transfer. However, if trophic transfer is studied at all, different ecosystems are generally examined in isolation. The aim of this study was therefore to unravel the PFAS transfer through a contaminated terrestrial and aquatic food web, with spiders as top predators. To this end, organisms from the aquatic and terrestrial compartments of a PFAS-contaminated ecosystem were collected and screened for 44 PFAS. The trophic posit

Review on the occurrence and biological effects of illicit drugs in aquatic ecosystems.

Illicit drugs (IDs) and their metabolites are recognized as contaminants of emerging concern. After consumption, illicit drugs are partially metabolized and excreted unchanged in urine and feces or as active metabolites reaching wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Furthermore, most WWTPs are insufficient in the treatment of effluents containing IDs, which may be released into aquatic ecosystems. Once in the water or sediment, these substances may interact and affect non-target organisms and some evidences suggest that illicit drugs may exhibit pseudo-persistence because of a continuous enviro

Effects of the antineoplastic drug cyclophosphamide on the biochemical responses of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis under different temperatures.

Cyclophosphamide (CP) is an antineoplastic drug widely used in chemotherapy treatments with high consumption rates and that has been detected in the aquatic environment. After being released into the aquatic environment, CP may cause adverse effects on aquatic organisms since antineoplastics are well-known cytotoxic, genotoxic, mutagenic and teratogenic drugs. Moreover, predicted environmental changes, such as the temperature rising, may alter the impacts caused by CP on organisms. Thus, the present study aimed to assess the effects caused by CP chronic exposure in the mussel Mytilus galloprov

Trophic transfer of sulfonamide antibiotics in aquatic food chains: A comprehensive review with a focus on environmental health risks.

Antibiotics, which have been identified as emerged pollutants, are creating an increase in environmental concerns, with sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) being among the most commonly discovered antibiotics. Due to their widespread usage and inadequate sewage treatment, SAs are frequently released into the aquatic environment. The introduction of SAs into aquatic environments can kill or inhibit the growth or metabolic activity of microorganisms, thereby affecting biological communities and ecological functions and disrupting the equilibrium of aquatic ecosystems. The transmission of SAs to human

Structure, function, and therapeutic potential of defensins from marine animals.

Defensins are a type of host defense peptides (HDPs), belonging to a family of cationic antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) that exhibit activity against various infectious microorganisms including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Due to the uniqueness of the ocean's ecological environment, defensins from marine animals have a rich biodiversity and some special molecular features so as to possess significant potential. They exert antibacterial activity by binding to cell membranes, forming specific channels, or interacting with lipid II. These peptides can be utilized through various nanotechnologies,

Towards eco-friendly marine antifouling biocides - Nature inspired tetrasubstituted 2,5-diketopiperazines.

Marine biofouling plagues all maritime industries at vast economic and environmental cost. Previous and most current methods to control biofouling have employed highly persistent toxins and heavy metals, including tin, copper, and zinc. These toxic methods are resulting in unacceptable environmental harm and are coming under immense regulatory pressure. Eco-friendly alternatives are urgently required to effectively mitigate the negative consequence of biofouling without causing collateral harm. Amphiphilic micropeptides have recently been shown to exhibit excellent broad-spectrum antifouling a

Selenium and mercury tissue partitioning and trophodynamics in the Lake Koocanusa (USA-Canada) fish community.

Mining-related contaminants such as selenium (Se) and mercury (Hg) accumulate in aquatic organisms and transfer through aquatic food webs, where they can exert toxic effect undermining the ecological health of aquatic resources. Yet, how Se and Hg co-distribute within food webs and within individual organisms remains poorly understood. We compiled muscle and ovary Se and Hg concentration data from fishes captured in Lake Koocanusa-a North American reservoir receiving elevated Se and Hg inputs from coal mining operations in the Elk River Valley, Canada-to provide insights into the co-processing

A review of ecological effects and environmental fate of illicit drugs in aquatic ecosystems.

Although illicit drugs are detected in surface waters throughout the world, their environmental fate and ecological effects are not well understood. Many illicit drugs and their breakdown products have been detected in surface waters and temporal and spatial variability in use translates into "hot spots and hot moments" of occurrence. Illicit drug occurrence in regions of production and use and areas with insufficient wastewater treatment are not well studied and should be targeted for further study. Evidence suggests that illicit drugs may not be persistent, as their half-lives are relatively

Speciation analysis of low-level tritium in marine organisms.

BACKGROUND: Tritium in the marine organisms is present as both tissue-free water tritium (TFWT) and organically bound tritium (OBT). OBT has longer biological retention than TFWT and is more important for radiological impact assessment. Accurate OBT quantification remains difficult because of low activity levels, complex organic matrices, residual TFWT interference, and impurities in combustion water that can affect LSC measurement. Thus, reliable speciation methods are required for assessing tritium exposure risks in marine organisms. RESULTS: In this work, we developed a method for tritium

Bacterial diseases of fish associated with human health.

As this country continues to increase its food fish output without increasing the water acreage, and environmental wastes continue to plague fish production, we can expect to encounter more zoonotic organisms, especially enteric-like organisms. Since 1972, the number of enteric genera has doubled and the species have tripled. The veterinarian engaged in aquatic animal medicine should be aware that aquatic pets or food fish can be associated with human disease and respond accordingly. In such cases, the veterinarian plays a major role in maintaining human health.

A Tiered Ecological Risk Assessment of Caffeine by Using Species Sensitivity Distribution Method in the Nansi Lake Basin.

Caffeine has been reported toxic to aquatic organisms, and it frequently occurs at relatively high concentrations in most of surface waters. However, it is difficult to control caffeine pollution because of the lack of Water Quality Criteria (WQC). In this study, species sensitivity distribution method and Log-normal model were applied to derive caffeine WQC as 83.7 ng/L. Meanwhile, concentrations of caffeine in the Nansi Lake basin were detected in 29 sampling sites, with the mean of 99.3 ng/L. The levels of caffeine in tributaries were higher than those in the lakes. In addition, a tied ecol

The response of aquatic ecosystems to the interactive effects of stratospheric ozone depletion, UV radiation, and climate change.

Variations in stratospheric ozone and changes in the aquatic environment by climate change and human activity are modifying the exposure of aquatic ecosystems to UV radiation. These shifts in exposure have consequences for the distributions of species, biogeochemical cycles, and services provided by aquatic ecosystems. This Quadrennial Assessment presents the latest knowledge on the multi-faceted interactions between the effects of UV irradiation and climate change, and other anthropogenic activities, and how these conditions are changing aquatic ecosystems. Climate change results in variation

Differential effects of pharmaceuticals and insecticides on swimming behaviour and survival in Gammarus pulex.

Many freshwater systems are continuously exposed to waste streams like municipal wastewater and agricultural runoff, leading to exposure to chemicals that can cause mortality and behavioural changes in aquatic organisms. While research has advanced our understanding of pesticide effects on behaviour of aquatic organisms, the impacts of pharmaceuticals are less understood. Psychopharmaceuticals are particularly interesting because they can act on nervous systems, potentially affecting the behaviour of aquatic organisms. Sublethal behavioural effects can be crucial in ecotoxicological research f

Pyridaben induced cardiotoxicity during the looping stages of zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos.

Pyridaben is a widely used acaricide in agriculture and reaches a high concentration (97 μg/L) in paddy water for a short time when pyridaben was applied to rice. However, its toxicity to aquatic organisms is still poorly understood. Therefore, we assessed the pyridaben cardiotoxicity to aquatic organisms using the zebrafish (Danio rerio) model. We found that pyridaben is highly toxic to aquatic organisms, and LC50 of pyridaben for zebrafish at 72 hpf was 100.6 μg/L. Pyridaben caused severe cardiac malformations and functional abnormalities. Morphologic abnormity included severe pericardial ed
