Comparison of CAD-CAM and hand made sockets for PTB prostheses.

The aim of the present study was to compare sockets for below-knee (BK) prostheses made by Computer Aided Design-Computer Aided Manufacture (CAD-CAM) to those made by hand. The patients in the study were provided with two prostheses each, which apart from the sockets, were identical. One socket was made by the CAD-CAM technique developed at the Bioengineering Centre, Roehampton, University College London and one was made by hand at the OT-Centre, Stockholm, Sweden. The results were based on investigation of eight unilateral below-knee amputees evaluating their own sockets by Visual Analogous S

Skin temperature contribution to the decrease in withdrawal latency following chronic constriction injury.

BACKGROUND: Chronic constriction injury (CCI) is widely used as an animal neuropathic pain model. Neuropathic pain is considered to exist when withdrawal latency to thermal stimulation is decreased after inducing a CCI to the sciatic nerve. However, it is known that CCI leads to changes in skin temperature and that skin temperature can affect withdrawal latency. Aim of this study was to compare withdrawal latencies of constricted and contralateral hind limbs, to thermal stimulation, at the same artificially-induced skin temperatures. METHODS: Neuropathic pain was induced by four ligatures on

[Maximum limb reconstruction: concept and implementation strategies].

Thanks to the rapid development of modern science and medicine, limb reconstruction can and should be taken to the next level. The author proposes the concept of "maximum limb reconstruction", which pursues not merely function but the maximal normalization of structure, morphology, and function, leveraging advances in prosthetics, artificial intelligence, and exoskeleton technology to enhance limb preservation. For the three pathological states-defect, infection, and deformity-sequential strategies are outlined: ① mutilating injuries are managed in three phases (early revascularization, mid-te

Factors influencing the self-perceived mobility of active unilateral lower limb amputees assessed with the Prosthetic Mobility Questionnaire: a brief report.

The Prosthetic Mobility Questionnaire (PMQ 2.0) represents a reliable solution for evaluating amputees' self-perceived mobility. The study aimed to evaluate the perceived mobility of middle-aged users with a traumatic amputation using the PMQ 2.0 and to assess the influence of age, stump and phantom limb pain, amputation level, time since amputation, and prosthesis use on it. Fifty subjects were recruited. The median value of the score was higher than previously published reference values, reflecting the 'active' mobility status of the sample. The hours of prosthesis use per day explained abou

A bioelectric neural interface towards intuitive prosthetic control for amputees.

Objective. While prosthetic hands with independently actuated digits have become commercially available, state-of-the-art human-machine interfaces (HMI) only permit control over a limited set of grasp patterns, which does not enable amputees to experience sufficient improvement in their daily activities to make an active prosthesis useful.Approach. Here we present a technology platform combining fully-integrated bioelectronics, implantable intrafascicular microelectrodes and deep learning-based artificial intelligence (AI) to facilitate this missing bridge by tapping into the intricate motor c

[Design and manufacture of a utility artificial hand for a burned child by three-dimensional printing technology and its application].

In May 2015, a child with absence of most of the five fingers with scar formation after healing of a left hand burn wound hospitalized in our burn ward. According to the free online design program for making artificial limbs using three-dimensional printing technology on the internet, a utility artificial hand, most of which made of plastic parts, was designed for the child and printed by a three-dimensional printer. The child was instructed to wear and use the utility artificial hand, including driving the finger part of the utility artificial hand to make a grasping action by flexing the wri

Phantom Limb Pain Improvement Post Right Lower Extremity Amputation With a Liner-type Prosthesis and Pharmacotherapy Combination: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Phantom limb pain is pain in a missing limb postamputation. There is no sufficient evidence for an effective drug therapy, even though various treatment methods have been tried. Apart from drug therapy, mirror therapy, proprioceptive training, and virtual reality, as well as rehabilitation with appropriate orthotics have been tried. Liner-type prostheses use a silicone liner to reduce shear forces between the skin and the orthosis and to maintain suspension function, thereby relieving pain and improving comfort and functionality for the user. CASE REPORT: A 65-year-old man underwe

Functional and feasibility aspects of orthopedic exoprostheses in quadruped domestic animals: a systematic review.

The use of prostheses in animals with partial limb amputation has emerged as an alternative to euthanasia, aiming to improve their quality of life. However, the fabrication and adaptation remain challenging in Veterinary Medicine. This study aims to evaluate, through a systematic review, the determinants of viability, outcomes, and limitations of exoprostheses in domestic animals of varying sizes. A literature search was conducted in ScienceDirect, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar using structure search terms related to prosthesis, veterinary, amputation. After screening and

Encoding algorithms for somatotopic restoration of somatic sensations in the upper-limb: a systematic review.

Objective.Sensory feedback restoration represents a fundamental need for upper limb prosthesis users because it permits to feel somatic sensations during interactions with the environment. Considering the artificial sensory transduction, neuroprotheses should take advantage of effective encoding algorithms, which have the essential role, in the sensory feedback process, of coding the intended perception to the individual with the amputation. This paper presents a literature systematic review of the encoding algorithms employed for somatotopically restoring somatic sensations in upper limb of i

Exploration and demonstration of explainable machine learning models in prosthetic rehabilitation-based gait analysis.

Quantitative gait analysis is important for understanding the non-typical walking patterns associated with mobility impairments. Conventional linear statistical methods and machine learning (ML) models are commonly used to assess gait performance and related changes in the gait parameters. Nonetheless, explainable machine learning provides an alternative technique for distinguishing the significant and influential gait changes stemming from a given intervention. The goal of this work was to demonstrate the use of explainable ML models in gait analysis for prosthetic rehabilitation in both popu
